Annual Report 2016

Welcome to the HLG Annual Report has been an extremely busy year for HLG with lots of public and behind the scene activities. We have been engaging more than ever with CILIP HQ through the Member Networks Forum and Project Shapers; the Policy Forum; CILIP Conference; representation at the new CILIP SIG KIM; and inputting into Membership 2018 and CILIP Action Plan We have had discussions with other CILIP SIGs, including ILG and PMLG about closer working, holding joint events and awards which will come to fruition next year. More partnership working included updating Health Education England s NHS Careers website for LKIM roles by the CPD panel. The fantastic HLG Conference held in Scarborough was a highlight of the year and we held an After Action Review straight after to make it even better for 2018! For HILJ, we have had regular discussions with the publisher Wiley on issues such as open access and orcid ids. We have maintained a higher profile through engagement with social media and taking part in various twitter chats with #uklibchat and #ukmedlibs Finally, we say farewell to Elise Hasler, which marks end of an era after her 8 years as editor of the HLG newsletter. Many thanks for all your hard work in making it a continuous success. Imrana Ghumra and Sarah Hennessy (HLG Co-Chairs)

A look back at 2016 Highlights from the past 12 months Awards and Bursaries 8 Conference places were awarded to HLG members to attend the HLG Conference in Scarborough. 3 Conference places were awarded to HLG Student members to attend the HLG Conference in Scarborough. 1 Bursary was awarded to attend the CILIP Conference in Brighton. The Leslie Morton bursary of 1000 was awarded to an HLG member to attend the EAHIL conference in Seville. The Research in the Workplace Award (RIWA) is currently under review. Doug Knock took up the position of HLG Awards Coordinator from Margaret Scarce in May 2016 and is reviewing the current award application processes. HLG Newsletter The Group s Newsletter continues to be published in electronic format through the Group s website. s to the HLG Members, HLG Wales and LIS-Medical lists notify readers of the new issue. Over the four issues of 2016, we received 13 original articles plus 3 spotlight/information pieces, 3 book reviews and 13 meeting reports for publishing in the Newsletter. All of these items are written by HLG members and Newsletter readers and they constitute a significant proportion of the content of issues alongside our regular columns. According to the website statistics for the period from the 1st June 2016 to 31st May 2017, the current Newsletter constitutes approximately 8% of the overall traffic to the group s website. The newsletter as a whole constituted about 11.4% of the overall traffic to the group s website HLISD There were 693 entries in the directory of health library and information services by December In addition to being a directory of health library and information services, HLISD has added value from some of its other functions: a source of contacts, the database holds over 1,021 names. a source of collaborative network members ability for services to compile their own directory of services from it by downloading a spreadsheet saving time and effort linked to other systems such as library management systems and ILL systems, meaning that the data needs to be kept up to date in one system only. Membership We finished the year with 1227 members. By the end of the year we had 13 Group Only members. It was never intended that the figure would be

high as we encourage people to join CILIP direct. We also had 50 overseas members. HLG itself sees its membership declining year on year. In such an environment offering the right member benefits is vital, as is communicating those benefits to members and potential members. HLG must continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of its members and be an essential part of professional life for those working in health information. To succeed, it does need engagement from its members. HLG has been working to increase the opportunities for doing so, both formal and informal but at a time when members are facing increasing time pressures it also needs to demonstrate clearly the value of what it offers. The focus has been in how we provide more to a declining number of members and on our website and social media. HLG-Members discussion list continues to be used to keep our members informed of HLG activities and developments and we hope to make more use of it for gathering views in relation to our influencing work. New Nursing/Midwifery Core Collection The Health Libraries Group (HLG) have been in consultation with representatives from the wider library and information community working in the field of nursing and midwifery, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Tomlinsons to revise the Nursing & Midwifery Core Collection. The new edition was launched at the HLG Conference in Scarborough in September 2016 in print and online. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to this new version of the Nursing/Midwifery Core Collection. HLG CPD Panel 2016 saw the reformation of the group s CPD panel following the appointment of co-cpd Leads, Lesley Allen and Lynsey Hawker to the Committee. The CPD panel met for the first time in November 2016 where a new business plan for the year was approved. The main priorities of the committee this year were to raise the profile of the work of the group, open up further CPD opportunities to HLG members and plan a programme of training and development events to take place over the following twelve months. HLG Nursing Two issues of HLG Nursing Bulletin were released in 2016; one was a tech themed special, with articles relating to video production, bulletins and information apps for patients, while the second featured pieces from conferences on social media and reflective writing, as well as an article looking at the problem of plagiarism among medical students.

Spring 2016 contents and editorial Summer/Autumn 2016 contents and editorial Planning has begun for the implementation of an online archive of the predecessor publications of HLG Nursing Bulletin, NIS Newsletter and LfN Bulletin, both of which were print only. HLG Nursing played a major role in the work to bring the new edition of the Nursing Core Collection to fruition, with regular articles updating progress, and other efforts to publicise the work prior to publication. HLG Nursing has a presence on the newly reformed HLGCPD Panel. The HLG Twitter feed (@libs4nurs) sent out 56 tweets during 2016, and gained a total of 54 new followers International HLG Conference International Sessions A special International theme was introduced to the Parallel sessions on Day 2 of the HLG Conference where we were pleased to welcome Gaby Caro from the World Health Organisation in Geneva who gave a presentation on the HINARI Programme run by the WHO and the changing environment for training in the developing world. Gaby is now working on a project to review the materials and she encouraged participants to contribute to this. Shane Godbolt and Cheryl Twomey, outgoing directors of Phi then gave a presentation on Knowledge Management for Health in Africa. Following Shane Godbolt s decision to stand down as Director of Phi the Board drew up a succession plan appointing a Director Designate to manage the transition of Phi into the University of Winchester on 1 April Negotiations took place for Phi to cease to be an independent charity and become a programme of the Centre for Global Health at the University of Winchester. Phi s work continues in a new context and with new leadership. Shane is now an Independent health information professional and continues to support HLG with the planning of its international bursary for which the committee would like to express its thanks for her generous sharing of her expertise and time. International Bursary HLG continued to run its bi-annual International Bursary, offering a newly qualified health librarian from a low or middle income country the opportunity to attend its conference and participate in a tailored 2 week study programme in the UK. A high number of applicants were received, and the bursary was awarded to Olalekan Olayemi from the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research. Regrettably due to difficulties with visas this visit did not prove possible in time for the conference, but has been re-arranged for July 2017.

Policy update The agreed objective for the Health Library s policy work in 2016 was: To promote the value and role of health librarians to policymakers and external organisations. Much of this work is conducted as part of the joint policy work of the Health and Social Care Strategy Group convened by CILIP, SCONUL and Research Libraries UK. Through this group, we respond jointly to public policy consultations and contribute to the thinking of key policy makers invited to join discussions with the group. During 2016, the group members supported the formal implementation of the Accessible Information Standard ients/accessibleinfo-2/, which became mandatory on 31 July The Health Libraries Group contributed to the development of CILIP s wider work on policy with Special Interest Groups during 2016, including taking part in a Policy Forum on 31 October. If you would like to know more about our policy work or to become involved, please contact Ruth Carlyle on Ruth.Carlyle@hee.nhs.uk We responded as the Health Libraries Group to the National Innovation Plan consultation that closed in April 2016, contributing also to the CILIP response. Within our response, we emphasised the vital role that health libraries play in ensuring access to current evidence, leading to informed innovation. We also suggested that information literacy improves the spread of innovation.

HLG Conference September, Scarborough The 2016 HLG Conference took place at the Spa in the bracing seaside resort of Scarborough. We had 259 delegates, 34 exhibitors, 10 posters and 83 presenters. The conference was opened by Health Education England s Patrick Mitchell with an update on Knowledge for Healthcare. Other keynotes were given by Nick Poole, CILIP Chief Executive who championed the role of the healthcare professional in the future of Healthcare and Gareth Allen, who talked about the benefits of exercise on mental health as our Bishop and Le Fanu speaker. Lynne Daniel gave a passionate talk on her experience in the Expert Patient Programme. Presentations ranged across the breadth of current topics within the Library, Knowledge & Information health professional community. The question time panel, chaired by Imrana Ghumra, fielded lively questioning from the audience also received great feedback. The Mayor of Scarborough welcomed delegates to the conference dinner with a stirring history of the town whilst the fog enveloped the seascape! Most delegates rated the conference as excellent, confirmed by tweets and quotes received below: A well-organised, thoughtful series of networking and development opportunities with plenty of variety, delivered with verve and panache. Great - a very positive experience, despite there being a lot of bad news around health libraries, I came away with an impression of great innovation. Thoroughly worthwhile experience. A well organised and facilitated conference and full programme. "#HLG2016 thank you for a great event lost to reflect upon and to try out. Great first HLG conference Great 2 see so many post conf tweets & reflections #HLG2016 I passionately believe #LKSSTAFFROCK, you are the professions greatest asset

Finances Income for was 108, Expenditure for was 86, Year End Balance at 31 December 2016 was 85,000 Income In the majority of financial activity was related to delivery of the HLG2016 conference. Much of the income during this year came from sponsorship and delegate payments for conference attendance. Our main annual income source continues to come from commission from the sale of the Health Information and Libraries Journal. Expenditure The majority of our expenditure in 2014 was connected with the costs of bursaries and awards offered to HLG members, financial support for international healthcare library activities, expenses associated with delivering the HLG2016 conference, and general running costs of HLG such as maintenance of the Health Library and Information Services Directory (HLISD) All expenditure was according to our 2016 business plan. There were no unforeseen expenditures and all activities were completed within their anticipated budget allocation. Future Planning While we recorded a profit from the 2016 conference this does not account for expenditure incurred in the previous financial year when venues were booked etc. and overall the 2016 conference generated a small profit due to a greater income from sponsorship than we anticipated. At the end of 2016 HLG had a reserve fund of 85,500. It is useful to have a reserve such as this to ensure cash flow for activities such as booking venues for the HLG2018 conference prior to receipt of any income. However, this reserve is larger than we require and as a membership organisation with charitable status we will aim to spend any income on providing benefits to our members.
