2 WHAT IS WEEK? National Careers Week (NCW) is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people leaving education. Careers Week encourages education providers to bring together students, local employers and advisers through careers events and activities. During National Careers Week it is up to every school, academy and college to offer careers advice and guidance to their students. We are here to help and can provide free resources, information on current career opportunities and advice on activities and exercises to run. The Government 3 recommends that all schools should work toward a quality award for careers education, information, advice and guidance as an effective means of carrying out a self-review and evaluation of the school s programme. 5 A growing number of institutions right across the UK already either hold, or are working towards, one of the careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) quality awards. Quality awards for careers are relevant to all parts of the UK, but there has been a spike in interest, particularly in England since the publication of government recommendations that all schools should work towards a quality award 1. However, some of these awards have been running (and thriving) for 20 years or more, so why have so many institutions opted to commit staff and finance resources, time and effort into achieving a quality mark for their careers provision? A vital landmark in the journey towards all institutions offering effective, quality careers provision was the establishment of the national Quality in Careers Standard 2 (QiCS) in Initially referred to as a beacon of hope by Director Paul Chubb, the Standard now extends to cover virtually all the specialist CEIAG awards and is the accepted umbrella kitemark against which all CEIAG awarding bodies measure their effectiveness. At the latest count, well over 1,000 institutions either hold, or are working towards achieving a QiCS nationally validated award. So what is the value of a careers award to your institution? Have you considered working towards a Quality Award for your careers provision? The process of working towards, and achieving a careers quality award will definitely help any institution to develop, improve and celebrate good practice. There will be scrutiny of what is already happening, a celebration of what is good, and reorganisation of anything that isn t of benefit to students. The route to success requires evidence of a structured policy; underpinning careers education and workrelated learning programme, and embedded quality careers guidance. Careers quality awards give CEIAG a higher profile and increase the involvement of senior managers and, especially governors. The statutory duty for securing access to careers guidance is required of governors as well as school and college leaders and staff. Some commentators 3 have argued that institutions who evidence that they take careers learning seriously by achieving an award can claim a related improvement in attainment and attendance this may be because students are able to make the links between classroom achievement and successful learning and career outcomes. Achievement of an award demonstrates to those outside the institution, including OfSTED that a high standard has been reached, with positive, measurable outcomes for students and an outstanding contribution to their personal development and future learning and careers.
