2 FALL 2018 OCT-DEC A message from the DIRECTOR The summer of 2018 has been busy for TrainND NW in this strong comeback year for the Bakken. Requests for workforce training are increasing in lockstep with the area s oil and gas activity. The signs of the pickup are not as frenzied as a few years ago, but evident all around us. In the midst, TrainND is listening to its stakeholders to be proactively positioned to meet the area s workforce training needs. Train ND NW faced a leadership change on July 1 when I accepted the position formerly held by longtime CEO Deanette Piesik. Deanette resigned to pursue other interests after being at the helm of TrainND NW from its inception. TrainND s programs, as led by a talented team of instructors and staff, were developed under Deanette s leadership and remain a solid foundation for TrainND s future. Serving as a grant director with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at State College (WSC) prepared me to lead TrainND s workforce training and the WSC Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs as the new Regional Director of Technical Programs and Training. Both teams are passionate about and engaged in delivering relevant, timely offerings in the market footprint served by noncredit bearing (TrainND) and credit-bearing (CTE) workforce education and training programs. As to TrainND offerings, safety training remains a primary focus. The CDL program is positioning instruction to keep up with training requests. The Certified Nursing Program (CNA) is now delivered in, Watford City and Enderlin. Please contact Monica Castillo at safety.training@willistonstate.edu to learn more about CNA training. TrainND regularly fields requests for training in business and technology skills, from leadership and communication to MS Office, especially Excel. TrainND strives to meet area training needs as informed by its strong partnerships. As the dog days of summer arrive, qualified instructors are available to cover many workforce training topics. In addition to standard offerings, TrainND can develop and deliver customized content and welcomes inquiries about the process. Contact us to discuss whatever training needs you have. 11 DDI LEADERSHIP SERIES SETTING GOALS AND REVIEWING RESULTS People are more engaged and strive for better results when they feel ownership of their work in both the process and the outcomes. Unfortunately, leaders fail to engage and reinforce this sense of ownership in performance management discussions. This course will show the positive effect of shifting the traditional role of planner and evaluator from the leader to a shared responsibility between leader and employee. This shift builds ownership with the employee and frees up time for leaders to focus on coaching and developing throughout the performance cycle. Leaders will experience how to use effective (SMART) goals to help them and their employees track progress and fairly evaluate outcomes. A well-written performance plan is also a powerful tool for leaders to use when determining where to focus their development and coaching discussions with their employees. Prerequisite: Communicating For Leadership Success. ***Please call the Area Chamber of Commerce Course ID: Price: $139 COACHING FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE Effective coaching is one of the most important drivers of team member performance. Whether leaders are guiding people toward success in new or challenging situations or helping people improve or enhance their work performance, their ability to coach and provide feedback makes the difference between mediocrity and high performance. By helping learners understand the importance of three coaching techniques and how to effectively handle both proactive and reactive coaching discussions, this course helps leaders have more effective and efficient interactions. Prerequisite: Communicating for Leadership Success. ***Please call the Area Chamber of Commerce Course ID: Price: $139 COMMUNICATING WITH IMPACT Many organizations focus on technical skills as all-important to success in the workplace. This course builds leaders skills in handling chronic performance problems. They learn how to document and present a solid case for needed improvement and use effective interaction skills. Leaders identify the steps to take after the performance problem discussion to provide ongoing feedback and support, and determine if it is necessary to impose formal consequences. In this course, leaders learn the skills they need to address these challenges, gain the commitment of team members, develop individual skills and abilities, and enhance the overall capability and capacity of their teams and, ultimately, the organization. Leaders learn to identify the tasks they need to delegate, select the most appropriate individuals, assess capabilities and commitment, and plan the delegation discussion.
