11 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 9 HALF-DAY COURSES DUE DILIGENCE/BILL C45 Participants gain a comprehensive overview of: Due diligence and how it works for you and your organization; The rights and responsibilities of employees and employers in the workplace and what they mean; and, The Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations. FIRE SIMULATOR EXTINGUISHER Participants learn when and how to use a fire extinguisher. Each participant will successfully extinguish a simulated fire using the proper technique within the designated time. LOCKOUT In this course, you will learn how to develop a lockout system for your company that complies with the Occupational Safety General Regulations. POWERLINE SAFETY This course provides critical information about the hazards of working near overhead power lines and explains the relevant sections of the current Occupational Safety Regulations in Nova Scotia. RISK ASSESSMENT Participants learn how to identify various hazards and are introduced to tools to assess risk. SAFE LIFTING PRACTICES This course covers the basics of safe lifting: Injury statistics; Keys to good posture; Proper body mechanics; and, The do s and don ts of lifting. SAFE WINTER DRIVING Enhance your driving skills in winter conditions to manage the hazards of icy roads and poor weather conditions. In-class instruction focuses on the environment, vehicle and driver in winter conditions. WAREHOUSE HAZARDS Learn to prevent incidents and injuries by recognizing workplace hazards. This course covers the following topics: Safe work practices; Selecting and using proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); Understanding your duties and rights as given in the Occupational Health and Safety legislation; and, Contacting government departments to find health and safety related information. WHMIS This course is designed for workers, supervisors and managers. Participants learn the major elements of a WHMIS program and how to implement a WHMIS Program in compliance with existing legislation. ONE-DAY COURSES AERIAL PLATFORM/ZOOM BOOM Participants learn about the hazards of working on an aerial platform, the importance of preplanning and inspecting the equipment, and safe work procedures to ensure a safer working environment. BASIC RIGGING This course introduces participants to the principles and regulations pertaining to rigging. Participants require hard hats, CSA approved footwear, safety glasses, gloves and a harness.

12 10 BUCKET TRUCK EVACUATION This course combines a half-day of classroom learning and a half-day of practical application. In-class instruction includes storage, maintenance and inspection of equipment and a review of the principles of fall protection. Hands-on training includes inspection of equipment and seven controlled descents from heights of 3.5 to 7 metres. CANADA LABOUR CODE: PART II Participants gain a comprehensive understanding of all sections of the Canada Labour Code: Part II, as well as all sections of the Canada Occupational Safety and Health Regulations. CONFINED SPACE ENTRY RECERTIFICATION Participants learn about the hazards of working in confined spaces and protective measures and equipment to ensure a safer working environment. Prerequisite 2 Day Confined Space Entry. DISABILITY CASE MANAGEMENT This program is designed for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals who are responsible for disability programs in their workplaces. Participants learn how to run a successful program and manage costs. FALL PROTECTION Participants learn about the importance of fall protection procedures and the key components of a fall protection system. Participants learn procedures for inspection, storage and maintenance of fall protection equipment. FIRE WARDEN Participants will gain an understanding of: The duties of inspecting the workplace; Reporting procedures; and, Evacuation principles. Each participant will successfully extinguish a simulated fire using the proper technique within the designated time. FLEET SAFETY TRAINING This course covers current fleet safety policies and programs to ensure a safer working environment and reduce company costs. INCIDENT INVESTIGATION Participants learn how to conduct thorough workplace incident investigations. This course provides realistic recommendations through interactive case studies to reduce or eliminate incidents and create a safer, healthier workplace. MANAGING WORKPLACE VIOLENCE This comprehensive course deals with every aspect of managing workplace violence and employee safety and health, including: Hazard assessment; Prevention; Security; Investigations; and, Recovery. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OHS) COMMITTEE Participants gain an understanding of what a health and safety committee is and OHS committee requirements under the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act. OFFICE SAFETY This comprehensive course covers the following topics: Workplace health and safety and the law; Workplace inspections; Incident investigation; and, The functions and duties of Safety Committee Representatives and Committee members. SCAFFOLD BASICS Workers and supervisors learn procedures to avoid incidents while working on scaffolding. This course combines one half-day of theory and regulations and one half-day of practical training. Participants should be equipped with gloves, eye protection, hard hats, CSA approved footwear and fall arrest PPE.

13 SUSPENDED ACCESS EQUIPMENT This course covers theory, regulations and hands-on practical training in safe work procedures for suspended access equipment. Participants should be equipped with hard hats, CSA approved footwear, gloves, safety glasses and a harness. 11 TEN STEPS TO SAFETY EXCELLENCE FOR SENIOR MANAGERS This program is designed for the senior management team. Participants learn ten steps to help the organization move the safety system forward and gain an understanding of the manager s role in the process. TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG) This course is designed for workers, supervisors and managers. Participants learn the basic elements of the TDG Program for ground transportation. WORKPLACE INSPECTIONS Participants gain an understanding of: The role of inspections in a health and safety program; How proper planning and preparation are key to successful inspections; and, The importance of follow-up. TWO-DAY COURSES 7 HABITS FOR MANAGERS Franklin Covey s The 7 Habits for Managers workshop is an intensive application-oriented learning experience that addresses the entire role of the manager. This workshop gives new and experienced managers a set of tools to meet today s management challenges. In partnership with Global Training Edge. CONFINED SPACE ENTRY Participants learn about the hazards of working in confined spaces and the protective measures and equipment to ensure a safer working environment. DUE DILIGENCE FOR SUPERVISORS This course covers the duties, responsibilities, procedures and benefits of integrating safety into the workplace. Participants learn practical tools to manage safety more effectively. In partnership with Global Training Edge. FORKLIFT SAFETY This comprehensive course is designed for experienced and novice operators. Participants learn safe practices and procedures for operating forklifts. Employers are required under the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act to provide training to all persons operating forklift equipment. INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE This course covers the fundamentals of industrial hygiene: Basic mathematics, chemistry and physiology; Air testing; Heat and noise; Limits and controls; and, Occupational hygiene management. Participants complete a take-home examination. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES This course helps managers and supervisors improve their communication skills. Topics covered include adult learning styles, presentation skills and the manager as a facilitator. In partnership with Global Training Edge. SUPERVISOR SKILLS This program covers the basics of supervision and management. Participants develop skills in leadership, communication, team building, problem solving and dealing with difficult people. In partnership with Global Training Edge. ADVANCED INCIDENT INVESTIGATION (SIIP) Participants learn analytical techniques to determine the root cause(s) of workplace incidents, beginning with the worker and ending at the senior level in an organization. In partnership with Global Training Edge.

14 12 THREE-DAY COURSES DUE DILIGENCE FOR SUPERVISORS TRAIN THE TRAINER This course focuses on instructional techniques and the principles of due diligence. Participants learn: Tools to recognize the duties, responsibilities, procedures and benefits of integrating safety into the workplace; and, Principles of effective management. Participants receive an instructional techniques guide and materials required to train others in due diligence. FORKLIFT TRAIN THE TRAINER Participants learn about forklift fundamentals, including: Principles of stability, balance and capacity; Pre-operating inspections; Rules of the road; and, Recharging and refueling. ADVANCED INCIDENT INVESTIGATION (SIIP) TRAIN THE TRAINER Participants learn instructional techniques and the principles of incident investigation. This course provides: Tools to analyze workplace incidents and their root causes; In-depth understanding of investigation processes and how to apply them; and, Instructional techniques guide and materials necessary to conduct Advanced Incident Investigation training. In partnership with Global Training Edge. FOUR-DAY COURSES WHMIS TRAIN THE TRAINER This course focuses on instructional techniques. Participants gain the skills required to return to the workplace and train other employees in WHMIS. Participants receive WHMIS regulations and an instructional techniques guide. FIVE-DAY COURSES AUDITING TECHNIQUES Participants develop the skills to conduct an extensive occupational health and safety audit in any work environment. INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE FOR DDC/PDIC This course provides the skills required to teach the Canada Safety Council s six hour Professional Driver Improvement course. The emphasis of this course is on instructional techniques. RYERSON OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY SYSTEMS Participants gain an overall understanding of the establishment, function and maintenance of a comprehensive, workplace specific occupational health & safety system. In Partnership with Ryerson University. TEN-DAY COURSES DRIVING SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR COURSE This course consists of 40 hours of in-class and 40 hours of in-vehicle instruction. Participants develop skills to teach for driving schools. HOME STUDY PRACTICAL LOSS CONTROL LEADERSHIP This self study course provides strategies and procedures to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and overall profitability of participants organizations.

15 FIRST AID 13 EMERGENCY FIRST AID (EFA) Participants learn about first aid for life threatening conditions. Topics covered include: Breathing and cardiac emergencies; Severe bleeding and shock; Airway management; and, CPR. Recognized by the Department of Labour. STANDARD FIRST AID (SFA) This course includes all the components of Emergency First Aid as well as secondary conditions such as broken bones, sudden medical illnesses, spinal injuries, poisoning and soft tissue injuries. Recognized by the Department of Labour. FIRST AID RECERTIFICATION Participants may be recertified in Emergency First Aid (EFA) or Standard First Aid (SFA) within three years of certification. Prerequisite Previous EFA or SFA training within the last 3 years. ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMS DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS Our Defensive Driving Programs (DDC & PDIC) are recognized by Access NS to exit the Graduated Licensing System and apply for point reduction. NSSC offers a wide range of driver improvement programs, including: Defensive Driving Course (DDC); Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC); Mature Driving Course (55 Alive); Safe Driver Award Program; Instructor Development Course for DDC & PDIC; Woods Roads Training; In-Vehicle Driver Assessments; and, Driving School Instructor Course. MOTORCYCLE TRAINING PROGRAM The Nova Scotia Safety Council is the province s leading motorcycle training provider. Riding a motorcycle requires a unique set of safety skills to avoid a mishap or collision. Whether you re a seasoned rider or just learning, our motorcycle courses provide valuable information to help you stay safe. Employers can also consider hosting an on-site motorcycle training session for their staff to reinforce the importance of a safe lifestyle. For further information on Motorcycle and Scooter Training, visit or call DRIVING SCHOOL The Nova Scotia Safety Council has been involved in driver training for over four decades. We are ISO registered which ensures our courses and services are high quality and continually improving. All our instructors have the experience, training and knowledge to teach students to drive defensively and safely. The Driving School program consists of 25 hours in class and 10 hours of in-car instruction, which includes your road test time. Pick up is provided for the in-car instruction, however certain conditions will apply for each student. Students are required to obtain their beginner s permit and pay the registration fee before beginning in-car training. This is an approved driver education program as required by the graduated licensing program and qualifies for insurance discounts. The course fee must be paid in full before in-car lessons are scheduled. The fee includes use of the driving school vehicle for your driver s test.
