2 Course Description: Students learn the fundamental concepts of occupational health and safety with specific reference to legislation in Ontario. Students learn to identify and recognize hazards in the workplace as well as how to remove or control them to make a safer workplace. Students will take an in-depth look at the Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion, students will be able to: 1. Describe Ontario and federal health and safety legislation 2. Identify key rights and responsibilities for workers and employers under Ontario's health and safety legislation 3. Relate occupational injuries and disease development (both acute and chronic) to human anatomy and physiology 4. Relate control measures to control points for a variety of unsafe workplace situations 5. Describe the common types of hazards in workplace and relate them to the current legislation 6. Assess control methods for common hazards in terms of their use and effectiveness 7. Describe the WHMIS system and illustrate its use in the workplace Generic Skills: This course supports the students ability to: Reframe information, ideas and concepts using the narrative, visual, numerical and symbolic representations, which demonstrate understanding. Evaluate her or his own thinking throughout the steps and processes used in problem solving and decisionmaking. Evaluate the validity of arguments based on qualitative and quantitative information in order to accept or challenge the findings of others. Take responsibility for her or his own actions and decisions. Prior Learning Assessment And Recognition Process(es): This course is eligible for PLAR through the Registrar and SETAS offices. Assessment of portfolio and/or testing may be discussed with faculty. Faculty Consultation: Teachers are available to see students outside of class time and students can contact teachers via voice mail, or through their department office. Students must adhere to the SETAS Lab Responsibilities and Safety Policies. Probation Policy: The School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science academic probation/suspension policy will be applied. Evaluation and Grading System: Quizzes (Best 5 out of 6; each quiz worth 12%): 60% Cumulative Final Exam: 40% To receive a passing grade, students must sit the final exam.
