As a tenured faculty member I teach classroom & clinical course, coordinate course, serve on at least one (up to 4) departmental committee, attend faculty meetings, advise students, maintain office hours, serve on a school committee, and serve on a Henson & a University committee, in addition to presenting talks, coordinating community outreach events, and volunteering community service. As the RN Coordinator, I recruit and am an advisor for all RN students working towards their BS or MS degrees and recruit, interview, and advise these students during their undergraduate portion of the track. As Departmental Web Master I am responsible for updating and maintaining the Departmental Website and the various pages and links housed there. As a member of the nursing faculty I am responsible for teaching 12 credits per semester, teaching fundamental adult and pediatric skills; selecting patient assignments for up to 8 student nurses (BS candidates); conducting pre-clinical,
2 pre-conference, and post-conference; instructing, supervising, and evaluating the students in a variety of acute care in-patient and community/office settings. As a classroom lecturer I write and present numerous pediatric lectures utilizing Power Point and Blackboard Learning System (MyClasses). As Course Coordinator for Pediatric theory I updated the syllabus, tried new teaching approaches, worked with & oriented other team members/instructors, was responsible for putting the course on-line as a hybrid course, and resolved student & instructor problems. As the Course Coordinator for Pediatric clinical I updated the syllabus, coordinated numerous community clinical experiences including many new sites, have instituted a clinical skills day, a milestones day, field trips to urban Children s Hospitals, updated the resources, developed a tobacco prevention teaching project grant funded by Tobacco Restitution Moneys, and developed & co-coordinated a regional/ tri-state Girl Scout Nursing Exploration Fair. As Course Coordinator for the Child-Bearing/ Child- Rearing Accelerated course, I performed the above duties in the pediatrics half of the seven week course and team teaching with maternity faculty who teach the other 7 weeks. As a Course Coordinator and co-lecturer I developed a new nursing elective course for undergraduates NURS 456 Pharmacotherapeutics wrote objectives, developed schedule, wrote and delivered half the lectures, wrote guidelines for a Herbal Presentation by students, a new situation paper, and for a simulated medication administration exercise. The need was identified while working on my dissertation and the course developed based on student survey input, exit interviews, a focus group, and NCLEX results. As Course Coordinator and part of the instructor team I developed the syllabus for the on-line section of the Health Assessment course. I oversee the on-line theory part of the course and am part of the team that teaches the lab sections. As Interim Associate Chair of the Nursing Department I was responsible for coordination of the LSRN learning system, establishing the course schedule, coordinating the clinical schedule, monitoring enrollment and room assignments, organizing the new student orientation, monitoring student health requirements, redesigning the departmental website, revising articulation agreement with a community college, and handling student disputes. As a member of the Student Policies Committee and Interim Committee Chair, I represented the university and department as a recruiter at several functions, reviewed prospective student applications and files for admissions and scholarships, developed an admissions grade review grid, worked at university registrations and open houses, and helped plan and conduct departmental open houses. I was responsible for the introduction of an admissions test. As a Chair of the Patterns of Employment Committee I updated the employment survey tool, developed a new Employer Satisfaction Survey tool, assisted with data collection and analysis, and presented results to the faculty utilizing power point, verbal, and written media. As the Chair of the Program Effectiveness Committee, I assisted in the evolution of the Patterns of Employment Committee (Task Force) into this new standing
3 committee for the department to monitor & track program effectiveness & student & employer satisfaction. As Advisor for the Student Nurses Association I advised the officers in the operations of the association, helped to organize fund raising and social events, and participated in meetings and community activities. As a nursing faculty member I worked independently with the departmental chair to develop new recruitment materials including signage and photographs. I also worked with the Department Chair and the Henson School s Associate Dean to develop a digital image slide show for the school and the university. Helped to write a grant to receive funding from the Tobacco Restitution Moneys from the state of Maryland to fund Tobacco Prevention in children in Wicomico County. The grant was funded and I coordinated these teaching sessions for 3 semesters throughout the county. Helped to research distance education and classroom technology for a grant to fund a new distance education classroom for the Nursing Department to be used for the RN-to-MS program. The grant was funded. As a member of the Henson School s Undergraduate Research and Faculty Travel Committee I am responsible for distribution of school funds for student research and faculty travel. I also serve on the University s Harassment Panel. I served as the interim Departmental Advising Coordinator and an interim member on the Henson School Health Professions Advisory Committee. As Co-Chair of Passport to Nursing, the Girl Scout Nursing Exploration Fair, I was the founder of this community service learning event in 2007 for pediatric clinical students held at SU. A collaborative event of NURS 361 pediatric students, SNA, Lambda Eta, and SU, it teaches healthy life styles & nursing skills to Girl Scouts and Brownie s while helping them meet a badge requirement. As a nursing faculty member I worked independently to develop a departmental museum for display of nursing department memorabilia and nursing artifacts. Delaware Technical & Community College (DTCC), Owen s Campus. January to July Adjunct faculty, member of Math Department (teaching pre-nursing course). As a classroom instructor of Clinical Math Applied to Nursing, I was responsible for lecturing, demonstrating math applications, conducting various classroom activities and evaluating the students knowledge of the assigned material through exams. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital (NMH). June 2005 to July As a consultant I developed and administered a new graduate orientation program for the current group of GPN/GNs (Graduate Practical Nurses/ Graduate Nurses). Taught classroom orientation material, conducted clinical supervision and education on the units, and administered evaluations post orientation for a six week program. In this role I worked with the Staff Education department, collaborated with the unit s Clinical Leaders, and reported directly to the Vice President of Patient Care.
4 Delaware Technical & Community College (DTCC), Owen s Campus. December 1991 to December Adjunct member of Nursing Dept. and Continuing Ed Division As a nursing instructor and lab instructor I was responsible for teaching basic LPN skills in the first year nursing lab; selecting patient assignments for 6-8 student nurses (LPN & RN candidates) after doing chart audits and discussing patients with the charge nurse; conducting pre-conference; instructing, supervising, and evaluating the students on the clinical medical-surgical unit at an acute care hospital and on the geriatrics unit at a rehabilitation facility (also pediatrics and mental health as needed); conducting post-conferences. As a classroom instructor of Adult Medical - Surgical Nursing, I was responsible for planning the classroom learning environment, lecturing and conducting the learning activities, and evaluating the students knowledge of the assigned material through exams and written projects. As a classroom instructor of Human Growth & Development (a pre-nursing psychology course) (including Continuing Education Division), I was responsible for lecturing and conducting the learning activities and evaluating the students knowledge of the assigned material through exams and written papers. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital (NMH). March 1991 to June As a staff nurse I was responsible for direct care to pre- and post- surgical patients and oncology patients. My duties included direct patient care, emotional support, medication administration, assessment, documentation, and patient education. Milford Memorial Hospital (MMH). July 1989 to March As a staff nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit my duties included pre-surgical preparation, education, and admission of one-day surgical patients as well as post OR recovery and discharge to home. Other duties included assisting in the GI Lab, minor surgery, patient transfusions and patient education/discharge instructions. My patients were adult and pediatric. Milford Memorial Hospital (MMH). May 1985 to May As a staff nurse in the Special Care (Telemetry) Unit I was responsible for direct physical patient care, emotional support, medication administration, assessments, education, and cardiac monitoring of 4-8 telemetry patients. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital (NMH). July 1982 to May As 3-11 Charge Nurse on Fox Wing (Telemetry) I was responsible for immediate supervision of 4-5 staff nurses and assistants and a unit clerk. Other duties included assignments, evaluation input, staff counseling, family support, telemetry monitoring, physician orders, patient and staff education, and various staff nurse duties as needed. Fox Wing included the pediatric floor, patients, and staff during an extended period of construction and remodeling.
