Heroes Festival brings kids and heroes together More than 750 children and their families attended the third annual Heroes Festival held on Sunday, October 27 on The Medical Center campus. Medical Center EMS hosts the event to provide a safe environment for children to trick-or-treat and allow children to interact with EMS and local emergency service providers.

2 Ron Sowell Named Distinguished Alumnus Ron and Dr. Debra Sowell Ron Sowell, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of CHC, has been named this year s recipient of the University of Kentucky Martin School 2 Distinguished Alumnus Award. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the UK Martin School and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Ron currently serves as a member of the Western Kentucky University Gordon Ford College of Business Executive Advisory Council, and as member of the Kentucky Hospital Association s Legislative Committee along with numerous other activities. The Martin School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Kentucky prepares leaders and produces research that improves lives, communities and organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the nation, and the world. Cal Turner Residents Enjoy October Events Upcoming Events GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT Thursday, November 21 The Medical Center Health & Wellness Center located at 1857 Tucker Way off Cave Mill Road in Chandler Park If you are a smoker, it s never too late to quit. Come by on Thursday, November 21 between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. for a free cold turkey sandwich and tips on how to quit in exchange for your cigarettes to celebrate the Great American Smokeout. THE CHARITY BALL Saturday, November 16 6 to 11 p.m. Sloan Convention Center Reserve your ticket now for the 9th Annual Charity Ball, themed The Great Gatsby. We will be recreating the decadence of the 1920s era. A cocktail reception and silent auction will feature Dueling Pianos, followed by a seated dinner, live auction and dancing to the music of City Lights. Ticket cost is $150 each. Tables can be purchased for 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 guests. One hundred percent of the funds raised at the event goes directly to patient and dental care at Commonwealth Health Free Clinic and The Dental Clinic. Fall is in the air for residents from Cal Turner Rehab and Specialty Care as they enjoyed their Fall Festival, a trip to Jackson s Orchard, and a visit by Halloween trick-or-treaters in October. The Fall Festival had booths from BRADD, Barren River Adult Day Care, Home Care, the Hospitality House, the Red Cross, and Senior Perspectives making it a fun and successful outdoor event. This year for the first time, trick-or-treaters were invited to celebrate Halloween with residents at Cal Turner Rehab and Specialty Care. It was a great time for young and old to dress up in their costumes and enjoy the fun and candy of Halloween.

Shafia Rubeen, M.D. has joined The Medical Center at Franklin s new Primary Care Clinic. Dr. Rubeen attended medical school in Bangalore, India and completed her residency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation. She has a master s degree from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Rubeen specializes in Family Medicine. In Scottsville, Prasanthi Boyareddygari is the new APRN at The Medical Center at Scottsville Rural Health Clinic. She attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she received her BSN and MSN (FNP) and attended the Southeastern Technical Institute in Vidalia, Georgia for her LPN where she was the Valedictorian of her LPN graduating class. Prasanthi has extensive experience. Before joining the Rural Health Clinic, she worked for the past several years as an APRN at Corpcare in Bowling Green. Scottsville-Allen County Chamber Breakfast Club Presentation Donate non-perishable food items to your department s Stuff The Turkey Food Drive box through November 22. All food donations collected at The Medical Center and Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital will assist the local Salvation Army with their annual Thanksgiving Day Meal. Make sure to check the expiration dates on food items. Dr. Clark Bernard, neurosurgeon with The Medical Center spoke at the Scottsville-Allen County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club October 17, which was sponsored by The Medical Center at Scottsville. The monthly award recognizes hourly and salaried employees; the quarterly Golden Pineapple is for supervisors and managers. Amy Cline The Medical Center - 5A Amy takes excellent care of her patients and they love her. Amy is professional in all that she does, and she always is willing to help everyone. She has a great work ethic and accomplishes her many responsibilities with a positive demeanor. We are so happy she is part of our team. She is a great resource for patients and the staff. Jill is outstanding in her work, is always kind to others, and transmits her positive attitude every day. 5 NUTRITION HEALTH EXERCISE RELAXATION CHC Get Fit Club 5 Get Fit Club Corner A benefit that partners with me. iwalk 2.0 Step Challenge Department Winner by Derek Reeder, RN The iwalk 2.0 Step Challenge was a great success! There were 586 participants joining the challenge, representing more than 80 departments. Together, those participants combined to take 105,240,724 steps. Western Kentucky Diagnostic Imaging (WKDI) won! Employees at WKDI logged 13,807,746 steps. A majority of the employees at WKDI participated in the iwalk 2.0 step challenge. Not only did they come together as a team to win the challenge, they worked together in other wellness activities. They also had seven employees who participated in The Medical Center 10K and the 5K races. Their department had fifteen employees who worked out in a gym, jogged, walked, or attended yoga classes regularly. Trisha Lackey, who is the Administrative Services Manager, says, The employees at WKDI actively encourage and engage in healthy eating while at work and at home. Our employees share healthy recipes for smoothie drinks, snacks and dinner entrees and share educational materials pertaining to living a healthy lifestyle. During breaks, many employees take advantage of the portable stair stepper. They encourage each other to walk the building or the parking lot in an effort to improve blood flow and increase mental stimulation. This helps prevent sluggishness, which can come with sitting in an office chair most of the day. The staff focuses on drinking water and other low sugar drinks. The staff at WKDI has enthusiastically demonstrated their devotion to living a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families. Trisha has noticed that since they have started focusing on healthy, teamoriented activities, their department has had almost 0% absenteeism due to illness! Western Kentucky Diagnostic Imaging is also this quarter s Team Spirit Award Winner! If you feel your department excels in good, healthy lifestyles and works as a team in accomplishing their wellness goals, nominate your department by completing a nomination form located on the Get Fit Club website. Meet the iwalk 2.0 Step Challenge Winner by Derek Reeder, RN Rebecca Gill, a mammographer at Western Kentucky Diagnostic Imaging, logged 2,066,584 steps and is the iwalk 2.0 step challenge winner. For logging all of her steps, she has won the Fit-Bit Zip. Before starting this challenge, Rebecca had been running for about six months. She is an avid runner and she ran in The Medical Center 5K and is planning to run in more 5K races in the future. She said that the iwalk 2.0 Step Challenge encouraged her to run more often and further. Along with running, she has also started to increase her fruit and vegetable intake, and she has decreased her portion sizes.
