Tomorrow s Woman is a full-service mastectomy supply and wig boutique that serves female cancer patients and survivors. Staffed with certified fitters, Tomorrow s Woman assists women with their specific needs, including customized mastectomy bras, wig essentials, headwear and more. The Perfect Fit is a lingerie and swimwear shop that provides specialized fitting by certified experts. Professional fitting promotes proper posture, which makes a woman look and feel better. Tomorrow s Woman and The Perfect Fit are now divisions of MedEquip, The Medical Center s home medical and respiratory supply retailer. Former owner, Bonnie Strode, continues to manage operations at Tomorrow s Woman and The Perfect Fit, and all staff are now employees of The Medical Center. Tomorrow s Woman will be an essential complement to The Medical Center s overall oncology service line, says Connie Smith, Chief Executive Officer of The Medical Center. Our resources, coupled with Bonnie s expertise, will allow Tomorrow s Woman to further grow and meet additional needs of cancer patients in our region. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

3 3 Pardon Our Dust: OB Renovation Underway Connecting Asking Recognizing Engaging Thank you for your feedback in the icare Survey together, we have created a better workplace. Welcome new CHC employees! Exciting things have been happening for the Obstetrics and Neonatology department. Earlier this year, the department completed a renovation project that included a new waiting area for families on the first floor of the hospital, and a new triage area and new Obstetrics Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) in Labor & Delivery. And in July, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit began using NICVIEW, an innovative camera system that allows for streaming video of babies in the NICU through a secure online portal. Now the department is beginning another renovation project that will ultimately touch all areas of Obstetrics and Neonatology over the next 17 months. The first area to benefit from renovation: the Newborn Nursery and NICU. This week, the Nursery and NICU are relocating to temporary space in the former 2A Dialysis Unit while renovation is completed on its existing space. Completion of Phase 1 is expected by mid-january 2015 when Nursery and NICU move back to its beautiful new space. Following completion of Phase 1, renovation of Labor & Delivery and 2A/2B Postpartum will take place over the course of three phases through February Watch the CHC Intercomm for updates. Safety is of the utmost importance for our patients, particularly our smallest patients. The viewing window was removed for security purposes. But security was not the only reason for removing the viewing window. Newborn care is evolving and the need for the physical location of the Nursery is becoming less and less important. Moms today want to have their baby with them. This modern concept of rooming in will keep moms and their babies together to promote bonding and encourage successful breastfeeding. Will moms be required to have their baby with them 24/7? No. Moms have a choice if they want to send their baby back to the Nursery for periods of time. But, the Nursery staff anticipates the majority of moms will want their infants to room in.

Jennifer goes far beyond what is expected of her. Jennifer never hesitates to help anyone. She makes a positive difference in the lives of patients and staff. Patti Zen Home Care Program Patti s patients love her. She participates in our Performance Improvement Team and is always focused on enhancing the care for her patients. She is a wonderful staff member. Patti ensures her patients have what they need and she provides quality attention to each one. Parents-to-be came out to take advantage of The Medical Center s semi-annual Expectant Parent Fair on September 28 at The Medical Center-WKU Health Sciences Complex Conference Center. Expectant mothers and their families were able to visit with representatives from several vendors in the community, including departments from The Medical Center, to learn more about what to expect when their babies arrive.

CHC Get Fit Club The Medical Center 10K Classic Race Tips by Derek Reeder, APRN The Medical Center 10K Classic is almost here, and you should be in the final stages of your training. Most people do a great job of training for the 10K, but many overlook the importance of continuing to train on race day. Here are some simple tips you may want to try. 1. Check the weather forecast and plan your wardrobe accordingly. On the day of the race, dress as if the weather is 15 degrees warmer than it is. Studies have shown that is how much you may warm up during the race. 2. Drink at least eight cups of water or a sports drink the day before the race. Make sure you are well-hydrated going into the race. 3. Stay off your feet as much as possible before race day! Missing one or two days of running will not affect your conditioning. 4. Be sure that you eat plenty of carbohydrates the day before the race. Good carbohydrate choices are pasta, bagels and rice. This provides your body with the necessary fuel for the race. 5. Alcohol is not recommended the night before the race. It acts as a central nervous system depressant and can carry over to the next morning. It may also result in dehydration at the start of the race. 6. Attend the Health and Fitness Expo to pick up your race bib and shirt. The Expo will be held at the Sloan Convention Center from 4 8 p.m. on October If you have not done so already, familiarize yourself with the course. If possible, walk or drive the course before race day. 8. For breakfast, eat at least one hour prior to the start of the race. Choose something high in carbohydrates and lower in fat, fiber, and protein. Stay away from rich, fatty, or high fiber foods since these may cause GI distress. 9. Make sure your alarm clock is set and working properly. On race day, you should give yourself time to eat a light breakfast, find parking and plenty of time for a good warm up. This year, the race times have changed the 1.5 mile fun walk starts at 7:45 a.m., the 10K Wheelchair race starts at 7:55 a.m., The Medical Center 10K Classic starts at 8 a.m., and the 5K Run/Walk starts at 8:15 a.m. 10. Take advantage of the water stops on the course. After the race, please thank all the volunteers for handing out water and helping with the race. 11. If this is your first race, don t put pressure on yourself to achieve a really fast time. Finishing the race and enjoying the experience are excellent goals for a first-timer. Enjoy the thrill of crossing the finish line! CHC Wins 10K Classic Corporate Challenge! Congratulations to Team CHC! For the second consecutive year our team has won the The Medical Center 10K Classic Corporate Challenge. There were 111 employees who signed up for the race, and an additional 37 friends and family joined Team CHC. For winning the challenge, we will be given a special T-Shirt to wear during the race.
