4 COURSE DESCRIPTION Until recently, posttraumatic stress was considered a relatively straightforward response to a single traumatic event. However, recent research indicates that trauma-related disturbance can be quite complex symptomatically, involving a variety of symptoms and difficulties beyond PTSD. Drawing on the latest trauma research and theory, Dr. Briere presents a nonpathologizing, developmentally-informed therapy for these complex posttraumatic presentations that integrates cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic perspectives. This program is suggested for psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, advanced graduate students and other healthcare professionals with an intermediate knowledge in this field. It is not suitable for the general public. STATEMENT OF NEED Working with complex psychological trauma is a delicate balance between support and confrontation, forthrightness and patience, and humor and resolve. All of these aspects are necessary to make a real impact upon what has historically been seen as a challenging client population. Needs assessment data collected from a variety of sources indicate training in practical, effective methods for dealing with complex trauma would be of ongoing value to professional therapists. Dr. John Briere s live workshop, Treating Complex Psychological Trauma, was developed to address these needs. This home study will allow professionals for whom attending a live workshop is difficult or inconvenient to receive the same training benefit and increase their clinical skills. \ GOALS & OBJECTIVES Overall goal: Participants will be better able to treat complex psychological trauma. The course will: Discuss the ways in which complex trauma differs from simple trauma. Identify the traumatic base for borderline personality disorder. Describe the use and function of the therapeutic window. Explore the central components of any effective trauma treatment. List the ways in which treatment for complex trauma is different from treating PTSD. Explain why a good therapeutic relationship is technically necessary for the resolution of complex posttraumatic disturbance. Date of Original Release: June 2005 Revision Date: May 2016 Termination Date: May 2019 IAHB Homestudy- Treating Complex Psychological Trauma 3
