2 Credit/Conference Information TARGET AUDIENCE Behavioral Health Program Administrators and Clinicians Veterans Service Organizations State/local officials or citizens interested in veteran issues County MH/MR Administrators Professionals involved in all human service areas EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES By the completion of this conference, participants will be able to: Identify aspects of the military culture that is not apparent to civilian clinicians; Identify veteran benefits available through the VA or Tricare; Cite direct and subtle aspects of transition back to civilian life; Describe issues for families/spouses to consider when veterans return from deployment. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS APA (Psychology): Healthcare Education is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Drexel University College of Medicine, Behavioral Healthcare Education maintains responsibility for the program and its content. This program is being offered for up to 5 hours of continuing education. CPRP (Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners): Behavioral Healthcare Education, Drexel University College of Medicine is approved by the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Associations (Provider #107) to sponsor continuing education for Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners. Behavioral Healthcare Education, Drexel University College of Medicine maintains responsibility for the program and its content. *You will receive a CEU which will be utilized by USPRA to verify your continuing education. LSW/LCSW/LPC/LMFT (PA SBSWE Licensed Social Workers in Pennsylvania): Drexel University College of Medicine is a preapproved provider of continuing education for Social Workers and Clinical Social Workers. This program is being offered for up to 5 hours of continuing education. NBCC (National Counselors): Drexel University College of Medicine/BHE is an NBCC- Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEPTM) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. We can award a maximum of 5 hours of CE Credit. PA Nurses: Healthcare Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants will be awarded a maximum of 5 contact hours for attending this program. PA Educators Act 48: Healthcare Education is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer continuing education credits under Act 48 guidelines. Drexel University College of Medicine, Behavioral Healthcare Education adheres to Act 48 Continuing Education Guidelines. PA educators will receive a maximum of 5 hours of credit for attending this program. PCB (PA Certified Additions Counselor): Healthcare Education will award a maximum of 5 PCB Approved Hours of Education for this program. Our program is certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board, Provider # 133. 3 Conference Schedule Behavioral Health Seminars For Building Veteran Support and Resource Networks 9:00-9:15 Welcome 9:15-10:30 The Modern Military Experience; Perspectives on Issues and Challenges faced by Members of the Military and Their Families in the Post 911 Era. Lt. Col. Thomas Stokes Social Worker, 328th Medical Detachment, Combat and Operational Stress Control Unit based in Coraopolis, PA. The presentation will highlight what it is like for military members to serve in today s highly fluid and dynamic environment and illustrate key concepts related to the experiences and culture of present day service members. The goal of the presentation is to stimulate the thought process of the audience in relation to existing interventions used to assist Veterans in order to create additional viewpoints to potentially supplement the effectiveness of Behavioral Health Providers and others. These observations are based upon lessons learned from the experience of LTC Stokes while serving as a military Social Worker and from his highly successful combat tour as a Behavioral Health Professional in Afghanistan from 2010 through :30-10:45 Break 10:45-12:00 Issues Surrounding Reintegration Damon Frantz, LCSW, PA NGB PhD Director of Psychological Health, Fort Indiantown Gap This session will focus on exploring the issues and challenges that face service members and their families when they return from deployment. An overview of common behavioral health issues facing returning soldiers will be explored, including Acute Stress Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Anxiety Disorders, and Substance Abuse Issues. The workshop will also explore the less publicized challenges that service members and families face as they transition from being a soldier to a citizen, such as pace of life, sense of purpose, and rekindling relationships. In addition, the workshop will look at the existing resources available to service members and families and the needs that still need to be met. 12:00-1:00 Lunch Page 3
4 Conference Schedule 1:00-2:30 VA Healthcare and Services Kathleen Frost, Health net Federal Serivces Blue Ridge Market Manager, Carlisle, PA Jessica Lightner, LCSW OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker, Lebanon VAMC Participants will learn about the Veterans Health Administration and the benefits and services available to Veterans. Discussion will include information on healthcare eligibility including special eligibility for post-9/11 Veterans, VA services and specialty programs, VA benefits and VA partnership with Department of Defense and community providers to ensure a smooth transition for all Veterans. This session will also include information on the Military Health System (MHS) and TRICARE and describe how TRICARE and the VA partner for veterans and families throughout the Commonwealth. Since TRICARE manages and pays for services for veterans via the civilian health care system, the focus for this session will be on behavioral health. Regional resources and contacts will be provided. 2:30-2:45 Break 2:45-3:30 Families, Veterans and Real Life Stephanie Grimes ( Spouse of OEF Vet) Nick Grimes (US Army OEF Vet) Lt. Col. Thomas Stokes Chris Bosch (US Army OEF Vet) Through a facilitated panel of Service members, Veterans and Family members, participants will learn about real life military experiences affecting the mental health of members of the military community. Participants will be given the chance to ask specific questions to the panel members, allowing for an authentic learning experience tying together the educational information provided throughout the training day. 3:30 to 3:45 The Soldiers Project Joseph O Rourke, LCSW, BCD, Major (USAR-Retired) Clinical Volunteer & Coordinator of Speakers Bureau The Soldiers Project provides a safety net of psychological care for military service members and their loved ones. Through free, unlimited confidential intervention and education using licensed professionals, we seek to diminish the suffering in areas such as PTSD, TBI, MST and major depression of those who have recently served or are still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. 3:45 Wrap-up and Evaluations Page 4
