1 March 2015 Quarterly Member Newsletter Upcoming Events: The next NE ENA member meeting will be May 12, at 6:00 pm in. The meeting will be available via the NE TeleHealth network. Check out Nebraska ENA s new website at Inside this issue: Government Affairs 2 ENA State Leaders Orientation Health and Wellness ENA Foundation Speakers from NE ENA Educational Calendar 4 New Member List 5 NE ENA Board and Officers From Your 2015 ENA State President Although it seems like just yesterday, it was actually seven years ago that I was first honored to serve as NE ENA State President. I was fairly new to ENA and to what the organization did on a state level, and I was even more naïve to the influence the Emergency Nurses Association had nationally as a powerful specialty organization. In 2008, violent assaults against healthcare workers was a focal topic of the first General Assembly I attended. A number of ENA members from a variety of states stood before the delegates relaying story after story of their colleagues who were verbally threatened, physically assaulted, raped, and even murdered in the line of performing their job. In 2008, I was a staff nurse in the ED at another organization, my oldest child had started college, George W. Bush was US president, Nebraska ENA had 163 members, and it was a misdemeanor in Nebraska to assault a healthcare worker in the course of performing his/her duties. Today, I am proud to say that I have been a nurse for 32 years the past 20 in emergency medicine. I am the manager of the ED at Nebraska Medicine Bellevue, my youngest child is graduating college in May, Barack Obama is US president, NE ENA has 270 members, and, due largely to efforts by ENA members, it is a felony in Nebraska to assault a healthcare worker while performing his/her duty. ENA is a powerful force and its strength is in its members. Today s ENA is actively working on: addressing the challenge of inadequate resources for mental health patients resulting in boarding in our ED s; infectious diseases (Ebola, measles) and protecting healthcare workers and the public from exposure and spread; the rise in Annual 2014 Fall Conference at Mahoney Over 60 participants attended the 21st Annual NE ENA Fall Conference on October 23rd. A variety of speakers presented current information on topics including: street drugs and methamphetamine abuse; trauma and the bariatric patient; improving ED throughput; and pediatric head injury. venue. Also present at the conference were a number of vendors who helped support the program and brought information and products to conference attendees. A number of research and informational posters prepared by ENA members were on display as well. geriatric patient population and the complicated needs they present to ED s; securing adequate government funding for trauma and pediatric programs; and so much more. Once again, nurses have been named the most trusted and respected profession in the US. The influence we have cannot be ignored. When nurses speak, the public listens as do legislators. Let s work together to defeat the repeal of the motorcycle helmet law, which is before the Nebraska legislature this session. Be aware, be involved, be heard! Your community and state need you. Thank you for allowing me this honor once again, I look forward to the year ahead and to connecting with many of you throughout the Nebraska. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions, and what ENA can do for you. It is through a joined effort that we are our strongest, and Nebraska emergency nurses are definitely a force to be reckoned with :-) Happy Spring! Anna May, NE ENA State President amaze610@yahoo.com Injury Prevention CEN/CPEN Review 7 8 Mahoney State Park was once again the setting for the event. Participants were able to spend breaks and time at lunch enjoying the beautiful Planning is already underway for the 2015 Fall conference. The date has been set for Thursday, October 22nd, at Mahoney, so mark your calendars!
2 NE Emergency Nurses Association Page 2 Government Affairs Update NE Government Affairs Chairperson Nancy Hicks-Arsenault, MBS BSN RN, and NE ENA Treasurer, Kim Brandenburg, BSN RN CEN CPEN, have been selected to attend Nurses Day on the Hill on April This ENA sponsored event allows emergency nurses to meet with their state representatives and lawmakers in Washington DC to discuss focus topics such as increased funding for state trauma programs and psychiatric care. In February, the NE Nurses Association held its annual Nurses Day at the Legislature in. NE ENA was a sponsor of this event attended by over 500 participants. The educational sessions provided information on advocacy, reading legislative bills, how to make legislation happen, and preparing and giving testimony. Be sure to contact your local government representative to uphold the motorcycle helmet legislation which is a bill before Nebraska lawmakers this session. For more information on Government Affairs or to get involved, contact Nancy Hicks-Arsenault at nancy.hicksarsenault@rwmc.net. Government Affairs ENA State and Chapter Leaders Orientation ENA State and Chapter Leaders Orientation by Sue Deyke, MSN RN CEN This year the State and Chapter Leaders Orientation was held in Las Vegas. Representing Nebraska were Anna May (President), Sue Deyke (President -elect) and Suzanne Watson (Secretary). The conference highlighted the organization management and goals for the future. The event opened with a foundation event, Strike It Up for Scholarships. This was a night of bowling and opportunity to raise dollars that go direction to ENA members to support scholarships. Sue Deyke, President-elect; Anna May, President; and Suzanne Watson, Secretary pictured with state leaders of Kansas and Wyoming ENA Sheri Jacobs was the keynote speaker of the General Session. She share ways to make membership accessible, affordable and fun. As leaders, we took this information to heart and are planning a social meeting this summer. Any suggestions, ideas are welcome. As always, call or an officer. Next topic was a wrap up from Indianapolis on the analysis of ENA governance. They discussed how ENA can streamline the General Assembly and spend more time working on practice and clinical issues. In other words, a stronger focus on Safe Practice, Safe Care. The breakout sessions focused on utilizing social media, to grow your organization, advocacy and strategic planning. The ENA Strategic Plan was introduced. The goals for the organization have been set high. Membership recruitment, engagement and retention are high on the list, and all members are encouraged to actively recruit and share how ENA can help other nurses grow in their profession. The second goal is to have collaborative global partnerships with members and other stakeholders. The third goal focused on knowledge. The focus will be to be recognized as the premier teaching and training authority for emergency nursing. Quality and Safety were the highlight of the next goal. The vision would be to see universal adoption of the Lantern Award program by all Emergency Departments. The advocacy goal was to see ENA as a leader in the development of healthcare public policy and regulatory issues. The sixth goal is to invest in advanced technology for state of the art convenient programming. Last but not least was a strict financial challenge to exceed national benchmarks for financial performance. To add to this full agenda, over lunch leaders had an opportunity to meet and hear the candidates for the nominations and election committee. Also speaking were the candidates running for positions of Director, Secretary/Treasurer and President-elect. There are 22 members running for office. Voting will open late this spring and everyone should have their voice heard. All in all the conference was informative, the weather was beautiful, and a great opportunity to network with other nurses who advocate for our profession.
3 NE Emergency Nurses Association Page 3 A HealthiER BettER You! By John Swanhorst, BSN RN Pop, Soda, Coke, etc. We all call it something different and we all know how bad it is for us. If you are like me, sometimes I just need one. For me, my craving for Pepsi is only at work and it s usually when I am either going to go and drink a nice sugary Pepsi or I m going to go crazy, so I justify my splurge for that very reason. Is there ever a good reason to drink 41 grams of sugar (Yes, that is how much sugar is in 12 ounces of Pepsi)? No, there isn t, but for some of us, we just need that tasty drink. What are some ideas for someone trying to kick the habit? Try iced tea, water or lemonade. Need the carbonation? Then try flavored sparkling water or buy sparkling water and add 100% fruit juice. It will give you the carbonation that you miss and the sweet taste of the pop. Need the caffeine? Then try coffee or green or black tea. Experiment and try to find something that works for you. You will be surprised the benefits you will discover by just cutting out pop from your diet. Remember, they say it takes 21 days to form a habit and 3 days to go back to old ways. John Swanhorst, BSN RN Emergency Department and Biocontainment Staff Nurse Nebraska Medicine Scholarships and the ENA Foundation The annual State Fundraising Challenge for the ENA Foundation is underway! The ENA Foundation is the scholarship awarding portion of the Emergency Nurses Association and kicked off its annual fund drive with an event at the State and Chapter Leaders Orientation Strike It Up for Scholarships. The Foundation awards every dollar donated back to scholarships for ENA members so it s a great way to assure that your contribution will go toward furthering the practice of Vote, vote, vote!!! The candidates have been announced and soon the polls will open for the annual National ENA officer election. Be sure to watch your and the CEN Connection for details and link to cast your ballot. State councils are prohibited from campaigning emergency nursing. Scholarships are granted for formal nursing education (BSN, MSN, Doctorate degrees) as well as toward registration fees for ENA sponsored programs and conferences. The annual application period is currently open, so any member interested in applying is encouraged to do so online. In the past, Nebraska ENA members have received a number of scholarships in amounts ranging from $500 to $3000. or endorsing any specific candidate, but NE ENA does encourage all members to take a close look at all the candidates before voting. Your vote sets the direction for your professional organization!! 7 Page 7 Injury Prevention Update by Cindy Slone, EdD It s Spring! Have you noticed? Temperatures were in the 70 s this last week. The flowers are visible through the mulch and it definitely takes a longer time to get home from work at the end of the day! Everyone is out enjoying the changes and spring is officially here on March 20 th. So most importantly, have you noticed the increase in traffic that accompanies our desire to savor these changes boats being washed and readied in the driveway, more cars and motorcycles on the road? This is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and I wanted to call your attention to what you can do for yourself and your community to improve Nebraska a often deadly and often high distracted driving statistics. Eighty percent of Americans mistakenly believe hands free devices are safer than using hand-held phones while driving but that is not the case. More than 30 studies show hands-free devices do not make drivers any safer because the brain remains distracted by the phone conversation (National Safety Council, 2015). To ascertain the prevalence of driving distracted in multiple countries (Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States), the US Center for Disease Control reported the results of a 2011 study in March Among drivers age 18-64, 69% of drivers in the US (21% in France) had talked on their cell phone and 31% of drivers in the US and Portugal (15% in Spain) had read or sent an or text once in the last 30 days. Distracted driving and distracted- driving crashes were less reported only in countries that do not use automobiles as their primary means of transportation. Apparently driving less is really the only strategy that really reduces the high percentages of distracted drivers! What can you do as an active emergency nurse and community member to reduce the incidence? Personally be a role model and follow Oprah s lead to pledge to break the habit and put your own phone away when driving. While public legislation and highly-visible law enforcement does reduce risky driving behavior (It is against the law to text in Nebraska!), as emergency nurses with a temporarily captive audience in our emergency departments, it is our duty to provide safety education to the public. If you need to find additional current educational information, consider signing up for the National Safety Council s free webinars on their website at nscnews@nsc.org. CALLS KILL! (Hands free is not risk-free.) Drive safely and undistracted, Dr. Cindy Slone NE ENA IQSIP Chair More Great Educational Opportunities! TCAR-Trauma Care After Resuscitation.Coming Soon!
