14 RT Job Outlook The number of respiratory therapists is projected to grow 19 percent by 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Increased need for respiratory therapists is due to growth in the middle-aged and elderly population, which will lead to an increased incidence of respiratory conditions such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and other respiratory disorders that can permanently damage the lungs or restrict lung function.

15 A Growing Profession You are a growing profession, and you will continue to grow. This growth will ultimately lead to continued improvement in patient outcomes. Each decade of the profession's 60-plus years has brought new technologies and treatments. As a result, your sickest patients have increased survival, and those with chronic respiratory problems have improved quality of life because of contributions by their respiratory therapists.

16 The Growing Role of the RT Specialists and educators in cardiology and pulmonology. Advanced-practice clinicians in airway management; establishing and maintaining the airway during management of trauma, intensive care, and may administer anesthesia for surgery or conscious sedation. In charge of initiating and managing life support for people in intensive care units and emergency departments, stabilizing, treating and managing pre-hospital and hospital-to-hospital patient transport by air or ground ambulance. Educators in asthma clinics, ancillary clinical staff in pediatric clinics, and sleep-disorder diagnosticians in sleep-clinics. Also serve as clinical providers in cardiology clinics and cath-labs.
