3 Convention Information Continuing Education (CEs) The Mississippi Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Hours are awarded only for the session hours you attend. Contact hours to be awarded for each session will be posted as part of the session announcement in the convention guide. Session Credits & Evaluations ON-LINE ONLY: To receive contact hours for a session, each attendee must: 1) attend the entire session, 2) insure that the name badge is scanned by the CE Coordinator, and 3) complete the evaluation on-line. Once a session evaluation has been successfully filled out, you will be able to print your certificate for that session. Name Badges Registered attendees must wear their official convention name badges at all times to access convention events. Convention name badges will be scanned when attendees enter convention events where continuing education hours are available. Attendee Guest Badges Attendee guest badges are available for guests attending the dinner cruise. Fees associated with the dinner cruise must be paid at registration. Conference Attire Mississippi Nurses on the Hunt should relax and enjoy the convention camo business casual style for all sessions and luncheons. The Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center strives to keep meeting rooms at a comfortable Schedule Overview... temperature for everyone. If you prefer warmer temperatures when indoors, please bring a light-weight jacket or sweater. Force Majeure In the event MNA should find it necessary to cancel or postpone the 2013 MNA Annual Convention for any reason, including but not limited to, acts of nature or terrorism, low registration or other circumstances beyond MNA s control, then MNA s liability shall be limited to the refund of paid registration fees. Firearms/Weapons: Firearms are prohibited on the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center and the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino Premises. Session/Speaker Handouts In keeping with MNA s green policy, all available handouts will be posted to the MNA website. Download any handouts of interest to an electronic device. The handouts can be found on the MNA website under the LIBRARY menu in the 2013 Annual Convention folder ( Wi-Fi Zone Made available by MS Office of Nursing Workforce Registered attendees will have access to standard free Wi-Fi network that can be accessed from your personal computer or PDA like device which has a Wi-Fi mode within the MNA Convention designated areas of the Convention Center. If you have any problems accessing the Wi-Fi network, please call (251) Children Infants and children are not allowed in convention sessions. Infants and children under the age of 16 are not allowed in the exhibit hall. Regulations are due to safety concerns, audio recording and maintaining an appropriate learning environment. 4 Convention Registration How to Register Online Registration: To register on-line, please visit our website at Information for the 2013 MNA Annual Convention is housed in two locations: (1) under News From MNA, and (2) under the EVENTS menu. Online registration requires a credit card payment. MNA accepts VISA and MasterCard. Note: If you do not receive a receipt via within two (2) business days of submitting your online payment, please notify Deborah Norman at dnorman@msnurses.org. Mail/Fax Registration: Download the 2013 MNA Annual Convention Registration Form. Complete the Registration Form and mail or fax the form with all required information with payment included to: On-Site Registration: Registration Policies Late Registration: Mississippi Nurses Association 31 Woodgreen Place Jackson, MS Fax: (601) On-site registration will be available each day of the convention Tuesday, October 22 Friday, October 25. Registration will begin at noon on Tuesday at the Beau Rivage Resort, Convention Area and 7:30 a.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. There will be a $50.00 fee assessed to all on-site registrations. Registrations postmarked or received between Friday, September 27 and Friday, October 4 will be assessed an additional $35.00 as a late registration fee. On-line, mailed or faxed registrations will not be accepted by the MNA office after Thursday, October 4. After October 4, additional registrations are encouraged, but must occur on-site. Cancellation/Refunds: Refunds shall be granted, according to the following: a. Refund requests must be made in writing b. A full refund will be granted before September 28 c. After September 28 and before October 5, refunds will be granted less a $25 processing fee d. No refunds will be granted after October 4, but a prepaid registrant may send a substitute. In this position, Dr. Blouin focuses on building and strengthening external customer and stakeholder relationships, primarily in the hospital market. Dr. Blouin will discuss how leaders can engage staff in learning and applying quality and safety principles and tools. Dr. Blouin has published and taught extensively on topics focused on health care and nursing administration. She currently serves on the National Patient Safety Foundation Board of Directors and as an editorial advisor for the Journal of Nursing Administration and Journal of Biotechnology in Healthcare. Interprofessional Rural School Based Health Centers in MS with Anne Norwood, PhD, FNP-BC, & Lisa Haney, PhD, RN, CFNP The learner will be introduced to Inter-professional Rural Health Care in a School-Based Health Care Arena. How Medications Affect Obesity with Stan Owen, MD This session will explain metabolism and inflammation, how food affects metabolism, and how to prescribe medications in individual cases. 4:00 p.m 5:00 p.m. Concurrent Sessions (1.0 c/h) Management of Pediatric Emergencies with Chris Collado, MSN, PNP-BC The presenter will familiarize the participants with assessment and recognition of common pediatric emergencies and their treatments (e.g. respiratory distress and failure; dehydration and shock). Court is in Session: Defending the Medical Records Documentation with Diane Blanchard, PhD, RN, MS, CNS; Robbin Mulina, MSN, RN: & Eleanor Parrish, APRN, FNP-C The presenters will define the Nursing Standard of Care for Medical Record Documentation and give the participants insight into a courtroom scene demonstrating common documentation errors. CKD Screening in Primary Care with Ty Walton, MSN-FNPC This session will explore the awareness of chronic kidney disease in high-risk individuals. The hands-on portion will involve the utilization of synthetic knee and shoulder models. 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Concurrent Sessions (1.0 c/h) Management of Pediatric Emergencies with Chris Collado, MSN, PNP-BC The presenter will familiarize the participants with assessment and recognition of common pediatric emergencies and their treatments (e.g. respiratory distress and failure, dehydration and shock). How to Determine YOUR Fit: Nurses Placement Questionnaire A New Tool to Predict Nurse Role Fit with Wanda Jones, RN In this session, the presenter will discuss a new tool to assess the actual fit of an individual nurse in a specific role or job. Pharmacology of Diabetes Management with Annette Hess, PhD, CRNP, FNP-BC This session will discuss diabetic medication treatment regimens by discussing current algorithms for the pharmacologic treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes, and explore the relative risks and benefits of recent and future diabetes medications. Aesthetic Achievements with Michele McLeod, RN,MSN, FNP-BC The presentation will provide an overview of the current practices in aesthetic care and will provide information on the education needed to effectively practice. 12:15 noon 1:30 p.m. APRN Luncheon (1.0 c/h) Looking Back, Leaping Forward - Our Year-In Review with Linda Sullivan, RN, DSN, FNP/PNP, and Teresa Malone, MNA Executive Director The presenters will provide an overview of the past year s activities and discuss future endeavors to support APRNs. 1:30 p.m 2:30 p.m. Concurrent Sessions (1.0 c/h) Hunting for the Right Words: Seeking the Terms to Diagnose Your Latino Patient with Denise Gipson, MSN This session will teach communication skills and basic terminology for treating the Latino patient. PAP Tests: When to Repeat & When to Refer with Jenny Lamb, MSN This session will discuss updated PAP Test guidelines. Affordable Care Act: How It Impacts You with Robert Williams & Maris Cooper, MS Department of Insurance The presenters will introduce and/or clarify the aspects of the Affordable Care Act and its effect on healthcare in Mississippi. Genomics and Medicine-The Future is "Us" with Lessa Phillips, MD, MPH The Human Genome Project will be presented, as well as pharmacogenomics and how new gene based discoveries will improve our patients health and well being. 9

(This program may possibly request audience volunteers.) 4:00 p.m 6:00 p.m. Session (2.0 c/h) The Captain Knows All: Controlled Substances, Focus on Illicit Drugs with Jimmie Nichols, Captain, MS Bureau of Narcotics The purpose of this session is to review the use of controlled substances with the APRN, and provide information on current drug trends in Mississippi. Captain Jimmie D. Nichols, Jr. Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Captain Jimmie Nichols has over 25 years in law enforcement including service as a city patrolman, investigator, undercover agent and Director of Training for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics (MBN) that enables him to provide a unique and personal perspective on the illicit drug trends in Mississippi. His experience in coordinating drug roundups and undercover operations with state, federal and local agencies has provided Captain Nichols a distinctive understanding of illicit drugs in Mississippi. As Director of Training for MBN, Captain Nichols is responsible for overseeing all training for MBN personnel. He also conducts training for other agencies including the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Association of Gang Investigators (MAGI) and numerous police and sheriff departments. Captain Nichols teaches current drug trends and basic drug identification at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Law Enforcement Cadet Schools. During his work in undercover operations, Captain Nichols worked closely with numerous federal and state agencies including the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Customs Service (USCS), Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), United States Air Force Office of Special Investigation (OSI), Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Bureau of Investigation, and Attorney General s Office, just to name a few. Captain Nichols will provide an insightful look at the illicit drug trends facing the providers and citizens of Mississippi. NRCME/FMCSA DOT Medical Examiner Course Register for Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Beau Rivage Resort. Do you conduct DOT FMCSA exams? This 9-hour training course prepares medical examiners to perform DOT/CDL driver examinations following the mandatory Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) training curriculum modules. The course content will include topics on regulations and guidelines and will prepare the medical examiner (ME) for the required national certification examination. The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) is a new FMCSA program that requires MEs to complete a training course and successfully pass the certification exam before May 21, MNA is offering this course in Biloxi at the Beau Rivage Resort.
