2 speakers & sessions The Anti-Oxidants of Life How do we draw a parallel between life and a good wrinkle cream? Many ingredients in today s skin care products are known as anti-oxidants. Just what is an anti-oxidant you might ask? An anti-oxidant is an ingredient that either prevents damage to the cells or stops a negative action in progress. The similarities between the negative effects of free radicals on the skin can be compared to the negative and oppressive effects that we sometimes experience in life. In order to stabilize or prevent negative outcomes on ourselves, our friends, our colleagues, and our families, we must identify and repair these free radicals in our lives. A good wrinkle cream treatment for life will help negate the ill effects that can be the result of the negativity that we all encounter. In this session, we will discuss some wrinkle cream applications to soften the skin and soothe the soul. Presented by Melissa Anderson Melissa Anderson is the Assistant Dean of the Esthetics and Cosmetology division at Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Melissa is very active in her role as dean and faculty for the program. She has recently been awarded a national teaching award and is regarded in the highest esteem by her students. Rudy II: Never Give Up What do you do when you don t make the sports team, or get into the college you wanted to get into, or get the job you thought you were perfect for? Many people might just give up. But life always throws us these curve balls and we must learn to push through and carry on. We have to figure out how to do what the theme of this year s conference says and strengthen ourselves, encourage others, and break those barriers when necessary. This session will walk through what most people would describe as the rough times that the presenter and her family have gone through. See how people, such as our own families, friends and acquaintances, and even successful people we may know, have broken through some of their own barriers. Learn how they found ways to overcome their hurdles and how to choose to be positive when life throws you those unexpected curves. While this session will give some personal experiences of the presenter, it will also inspire you to find your true self through your own personal experiences. Sometimes we do have to choose to be positive, nice, and professional, even when we don t want to be. We should choose to put on a smile in the midst of chaos and it is usually worth it in the end. Presented by Melissa Tabor Jefferson Community and Technical College Melissa Tabor has worked at Jefferson for 24 years. She is the Assistant Director of Admission and Manager of the College call center and an Adjunct Professor of Communication. She has been married to Scott for 19 years and they have one son named Judson. She loves animals of all kinds and loves sports; she and her husband coach/volunteer with her son s teams as well as the local high school and are both very active at their church.
3 Competition, Creation, Compassion - Making it Happen for Yourself and Each Other Although women have been a major component of the American workforce for decades, we still struggle with balancing our professional and personal goals. Women often ask themselves how they can advance their careers while maintaining both a sense of individuality as well as a sense of community. In my job with Legal Services for the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, I have seen the problems that arise when a department or division is not cohesive. In this presentation, I will draw on lessons I learned in my career as a high school teacher, then a military lawyer with the Air Force, and now as an attorney with KCTCS to recommend ways that women can work together to achieve success for themselves, their co-workers, and their institutions. Presented by Pam Duncan Kentucky Community and Technical College System Pam Duncan is an attorney in KCTCS Office of Legal Services. She holds Juris Doctorate (J.D.), Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.), and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees from the University of Kentucky. She has been with KCTCS for four years, was a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force, and taught high school English. She belongs to Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Phi Mu and lives in Lexington with her husband, Jim. "Healthy Loving Leads to Healthy Minds" Lamplighters of America, Inc. is a nonprofit organization of nurses, social workers, and other health professionals, empowering communities with mental and physical wellness education. The first curriculum of Lamplighters of America is called "Healthy Loving Leads to Healthy Minds". It is a mental health and wellness curriculum that is comprised of the psychosocial stages of development and the human stress response. Join us in this informative session designed to help us understand how stress and reactions to stressful situations impact the children in our lives, our intimate relationships, and our relationships at work and school. Presented by Rebecca Sowell Lamplighters of America, Inc. Rebecca is a registered nurse of 24 years and Volunteer Executive Director-Founder of Lamplighters of America, Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky. Her nursing focus has been primarily in adult and pediatric emergency/trauma/critical care. Her personal and professional journey has led to her calling in Lamplighters. Culture is a Way of Life Appalachian and Proud of It! This is a presentation that involves the audience as the origin and stereotypes of Appalachian people are explored. Before one can Strengthen Self, Encourage Others, and Break Barriers, an understanding and acceptance of self is needed. When you leave this presentation you may have a more complete understanding of differences and diversity, and also have an increased pride for your background and heritage.
