1 2014 Nonprofit Leadership Institute for New Executive Directors This in-depth program, comprised of six sessions, provides new executive directors with dedicated time and space to set goals and develop action plans for professional growth and organizational development. Using the Guiding Principles + Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Maine as a framework, and real-world examples shared in the group, the program connects participants to the necessary tools and resources to help their organizations become more effective and well-run and builds a cohesive peer network to engage in solution-oriented discussions. Program Goals Provide an overview of the Guiding Principles + Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Maine with a focus on governance, financial management, fundraising, marketing/communications and human resources Help executive directors set goals and develop action plans for professional growth and organization development Build a peer network for mutual learning, support and sharing of real experiences, challenges and solutions In the Words of 2013 Participants The Leadership Institute is great for new executive directors looking for an in-depth introduction to nonprofit management. The Leadership Institute addressed many best practices that I could apply right away to strengthen my organization and I feel like I have a strong and caring support network for my role as executive director that I didn t have and needed before. The Leadership Institute has increased my confidence in becoming an executive director and highlighted how to create plans and order in a chaotic nonprofit world. It has opened my eyes to how local issues are part of a larger systematic problem in the entire nonprofit sector. Both my organization and I have benefited from the skills I ve learned.

2 2014 Nonprofit Leadership Institute for Executive Directors Schedule The program will start with a program overview and discussion about leadership in the nonprofit sector. The first session will begin at 11:30am with check-in, networking and lunch and end by 4:00pm. This will be followed by five in-depth skills sessions covering the topics outlined below. These sessions will start with a networking breakfast at 8:30am and end by 4:00 pm. The final session will end by 5:00pm with a social hour and celebration. 3 Session Descriptions + Presenter Bios Wednesday, April 16, 2014, 11:30am 4:00pm Beginning Our Leadership Journey Presenter: Karin Anderson The first session of the Leadership Institute will provide participants the opportunity to begin building their learning community, getting to know one another and their organizations, sharing the skills they bring to the group and the areas they hope to strengthen. Participants will discuss the essential qualities that define leaders, the skills developed and consistently drawn upon by the most effective leaders, common leadership challenges, and how to create a network for ongoing learning and support. A full program overview will be provided and participants will begin to identify goals and action steps for both their personal leadership practice and organizational development. This work will continue throughout the program. Karin Anderson founded Dala Consulting in 2006 to bring her skills in leveraging programmatic impact, leadership development, and capacity building to help move agendas forward that improve our communities and the world around us. She works with a range of nonprofits and foundations as facilitator, trainer, coach, and project manager. Prior to launching Dala Consulting, Karin served for 12 years as executive director of the Maine Women's Fund, where she led the young, start-up organization to achieve statewide and national recognition with innovative grant making, programming, and fundraising efforts. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 Assessing Your Board and Developing a New Governance Strategy Presenter: Jeff Wahlstrom, Managing Director, Starboard Leadership Consulting In this session, you will get hands-on experience in using a comprehensive board self-assessment tool to help your board assess its strengths and weaknesses and develop a plan for building a stronger governance model. Along the way, you will get lots of helpful advice about board recruitment, engagement, and leadership. You will be encouraged to have a board member join you for this session, and all participants will be provided with access to an on-line assessment that can be used with your board. Jeff Wahlstrom is managing director of Starboard Leadership Consulting. He has more than 25 years of hands-on experience as a nonprofit leader, board member, and consultant to an extensive list of clients, large and small, throughout Maine. He regularly provides counsel to boards on governance best practices, succession and transition planning, crisis management, and strategic planning. Jeff has developed an on-line board self-assessment tool for Maine nonprofits, and he is a frequent speaker on a wide range of board governance and nonprofit management topics.

4 Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Building Financial Credibility in the Nonprofit World Presenter: Cathy Ramsdell, Executive Director, Friends of Casco Bay & CPA The flow of money moving through our organizations amplifies the effectiveness of what we do. Good financial reporting is essential to assessing health, and thus essential to decision-making. It is also essential to your credibility as a leader. Strong leaders understand key financial elements. In this session, we will look at the uniqueness of the nonprofit financial reporting environment, deepen your understanding of fundamental financial concepts, look at the planning and budgeting cycles as an integrated whole, and identify key financial reporting formats and areas of risk. Cathy Ramsdell is the Executive Director of Friends of Casco Bay. She is a certified public accountant, a marine ecologist, and a behavioral biologist. She has served nonprofits and small businesses in a variety of executive, board, scientific, and consulting roles. Prior to joining Friends of Casco Bay in May 2003, Cathy s consulting practice helped small businesses, nonprofit boards, and chief executives with financial, organizational, and professional development; after the 2008 recession hit, she resumed doing financial consultations for nonprofits. Cathy has also conducted field research, run retail businesses, and worked in public accounting. Cathy is a board member of the Maine Association of Nonprofits, a financial advisor to Maine Initiatives, and Trustee Emeritus of College of the Atlantic. Wednesday, September 17, 2014 The Foundation for a Strong Development Program Presenter: Lisa Jepson Wahlstrom, CFRE, Ovation Fundraising Counsel LLC This session will focus on what every nonprofit leader needs to know about resource development. Topics will include development planning, ethics in fundraising, and policies and procedures for a strong development program. We will also discuss topics and specific questions related to fundraising submitted by participants. Lisa Jepson Wahlstrom, CFRE, has been a fundraiser for 22 years - working as a Development Director, as a fundraising consultant, and as a volunteer. A native of Maine and founder of Ovation Fundraising Counsel LLC, Lisa has provided her professional expertise on feasibility studies, capital campaigns, fundraising planning, grant writing, and a wide range of resource development projects to cultural, educational, and human service organizations.

5 Wednesday, October 15, 2014 Nonprofit Marketing Power: How to Gain Essential Response, Resources and Support Presenter: Gary Stern, Stern Consulting International New social media techniques and proven marketing disciplines are a powerful combination for nonprofit leaders seeking to sustain programs and services, meet evolving needs and seize new opportunities. This session offers a mix of discussion and audio-visual presentations. You will leave with a new understanding of marketing and new tools for success. Attendees will receive complimentary excerpts from the manuscript for 3rd Edition of Marketing Workbook for Nonprofit Organizations by Gary Stern and Elana Centor. Gary Stern is the president of Portland-based Stern Consulting International, specializing in governance, strategic planning, and marketing with nonprofits, associations and multi-sector collaborations. He led the Drucker Foundation International Training team, is the author of numerous nonprofit guidebooks, and is a well-known national speaker and consultant. His Maine clients include Healthy Maine Partnerships, Penobscot East Resource Center, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Frannie Peabody Center, and Community Concepts, Inc. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Leadership in Human Resources Management Presenter: Amey Leadley, Human Resources Consultant, KMA Human Resources Consulting In this session, participants will learn about proactive approaches to human resources management. Topics will include creating a positive work culture, facilitating individual and team development, communicating clear expectations, providing feedback and having difficult conversations when needed. Amey Leadley is a PHR-certified, seasoned human resources professional. Her unique background includes experience in all areas of human resources as an HR generalist, with additional expertise in the areas of employee relations, training, leadership and organizational development, and group facilitation. Passionate about collaborative, vibrant, and successful work environments, Amey has worked in a variety of settings and industries, from small Maine companies to large global corporations. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Colby College and a M. Ed. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, focusing on adult and organizational learning and development. She is certified as a Workforce Development Consultant from the State of Maine Department of Labor. Amey is an active volunteer in her local community and school system, and currently serves on the board of Maine Youth Leadership.

6 Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Afternoon Session Reflection + Staying Connected Presenter: Karin Anderson The final session allows participants the opportunity to reflect on the key take-aways from the skillsbased sessions and to challenge our thinking about what we believe the foundational values of leadership to be. We will circle back to the personal leadership and organizational development goals participants set for themselves throughout the program. Time will be spent considering progress and identifying next steps and support networks to keep moving forward. The program will wrap up with a social hour to celebrate individual and group accomplishments and contributions to the learning community.
