2 Course Descriptions Volume 4, Issue 3 October/November 2009 Training & Development News Managing Employee Complaints (filled) 8:30 a.m. 12:00 noon College Station October 28, 2009 Cost: $125 DeDe Church The uncertain state of the economy has led to an edgy and vulnerable workforce; employee complaints and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charges are increasing. In this kind of workplace atmosphere, managers must know how to respond when faced with these issues. This half day workshop is a fast paced session on how to recognize issues, what to say, what not to say, and what steps to take in order to deal with the situation. Included are interactive case studies, role playing, and audience response technology allowing each participant to anonymously click their answers to questions and instantly view compilations of class responses. It will include the QPR Suicide Intervention component. 1:30 4:30 p.m. Prevention of Workplace Violence This workshop reviews types of workplace violence, warning signs of problem employees, processes of prevention, intervention, and crisis response and ways to diffuse potentially violent situations. 8 Featured Speakers Frank Keck, CPS Conference Facilitator Seasoned motivational speaker and trainer Frank Keck develops and presents exciting seminars and training programs with a dramatic effect on helping organizations push beyond self-imposed limitations to develop new levels of accomplishment. His clients include Blue Cross-Blue Shield, the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Club, ALCOA, Union Bank, and the State of Florida. Dr. Jamie L. Callahan Dr. Jamie L. Callahan is an associate professor in the Educational Human Resource Development Program at Texas A&M University. She has held multiple positions in the Academy of Human Resource Development, including on the board of directors. Her primary research interests are emotion management and its relationship to a variety of organizational phenomena. Her work has appeared in several scholarly publications, and she is co-editor of a book, Critical Issues in HRD: A New Agenda for the Twenty-First Century. Dr. Jack Elliot Before joining Texas A&M University as professor and head of the Department of Agricultural
9 Before joining Texas A&M University as professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Dr. Jack Elliot was professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Education at The University of Arizona. He has conducted university faculty teaching workshops in Guam, Chile, Russia, Namibia and other locations. He has received several awards, but his most treasured honor while with UA was having the department s teaching classroom named for him. Jennifer Humphries, PHR Jennifer Humphries, a director of human resource services for Texas A&M AgriLife, has 17 years of experience in her field. Her focus includes performance management, employee development, diversity issues, and the design and improvement of policies and procedures. A certified Professional in Human Resources, she earned a bachelor s degree in business administration (business analysis) and a master s degree in human resource management from Texas A&M University. She led a team developing the Position Description and Performance Evaluation modules used by Texas A&M AgriLife. Jeanette Phillips, PHR Jeanette Phillips is a human resources manager for Texas A&M AgriLife with 10 years of business management experience and 14 years in human resources. Her main focus has been in recruiting, hiring, and employee development. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a bachelor s degree in business administration and obtained her Professional in Human Resources certification in She has been a facilitator for the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Program for several years.

In addition to previously teaching counseling and educational classes at both the graduate and undergraduate level Dr. Satterfield has more than 10 years of experience within the TAMU System and 20 years of experience providing counseling services in a variety of settings. She has worked with violence risk-assessment issues for the last 8 years; as a member of Texas A&M s Special Situations Team she regularly provides consultation regarding these cases.
