1 7 Steps to Building Resilience The 7 Steps to Building Resilience is a 2 day self development program that aims to build resilience and empower nurses of all levels. The program is designed and facilitated by nurses for nurses. The program works by creating self awareness and then examines the individuals own set of internal skills and resources. I believe that through education and empowering nurses, we enhance moral; improve performance and implement support strategies which will directly impact patient outcomes. I am committed to empowering and re-energising the nursing profession. Our profession is exhausted and overwhelmed. We need to STOP assess and evaluate our own health status because, if you are stressed, frustrated, dissatisfied, disillusioned or anxious, how can you provide optimal health care to your patients? Who is going to provide this specialist care to our generation and the next generation if we don t address these issues NOW! The program s success is in it s design. It takes each participant on a step by step guided journey through specific activities and processes that are required to build resilience develop confidence and increase self esteem. It incorporates ideas and concepts of Positive Psychology and Emotional Intelligence as well as live coaching. All of this combined promises to bring out your giant from within. I believe that to change our external world, we must first change our internal world

3 Facilitator Dean King Dean is a highly qualified Health Care Professional with over 15 years of nursing experience. He commenced his training in 1987 at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. He then attained a Bachelor of Applied Science Nursing in After completing a graduate nurse program at the Royal Children Hospital he began to specialise in Paediatric Oncology and Haematology. He then travelled to the UK and worked in a variety of clinical settings furthering his knowledge and skills in the Paediatric environment. Upon returning home he contributed to the development of the first Day Oncology Unit at the Mater Children hospital where he attained a Clinical Nurse (Level 2) position. In 2001 Dean took an opportunity to work at the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland as a Support Services Coordinator. This role involved educating and providing psychological and emotional support to patients and their families who were undergoing life saving treatment for a blood disease Dean now specialises in Professional and Personal Development; which includes Training, Coaching and Counseling. Using the tools and techniques of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis inside a coaching model, Dean has produced truly amazing results for clients, at both a personal and professional level. Dean has attained a Masters in Counselling; Bachelor of Health Science; Certified Coach, Trainer and Speaker; recognised Hypnotherapist; and a Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Dean s ongoing commitment to his own training and self development is a reflection of his dedication and commitment to his clients.

4 Step 1 to Building Resilience; Self Care - managing stress & preventing burnout At the completion of this module the participant will have an understanding of the importance of self care and will begin to develop a stress management tool kit. Content The Stress Continuum Life Events - Stress scale (Holmes & Raine) Define and differentiate between stress, pressure, compassion fatigue and burnout Causes of stress and compassion fatigue Signs & Symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue Warning signs of burnout Development of a resource tool kit for managing stress 2 Hours

5 Step 2 to Building Resilience; Advanced Self Care - mastering relaxation At the completion of this module the participant will have fully functional resource tool kit for managing stress and self care Content Review module 1 Differentiate between coping and healing Define and differentiate between relaxation and meditation Types of relaxation and meditation Scheduling relaxation and meditation Demonstration and practice of relaxation and meditation 3 Hours

6 Step 3 to Building Resilience; Values & Belief Systems the drivers of results At the completion of this module the participant will have an understanding of how a person s value and belief systems dictate behaviours and results; and how to change one s own values and belief systems Content Human development periods Define and differentiate between Values and Beliefs Value and Belief origins Filtration system generalise, distort, delete Values elicitation a personal journey The 5 Universal beliefs Changing values and beliefs systems 3 Hours

7 Steps 4 to Building Resilience; Grief - strategies for managing grief At the completion of this module the participant will be able to: understand and identify the grieving process; manage and care for people and self who are experiencing grief Content Define grief and mourning The Grieving process Signs & Symptoms of grief Understand the link between belief systems and the grieving process Strategies for managing grief in others Strategies for managing grief in self 3 Hours

8 Step 5 to Building Resilience; Managing Change in the Workplace At the completion of this module the participant is able to: be adaptable and flexible to any change in the workplace Content Review module 3 Values and Belief systems Review module 4 - Managing grief Understand the link between change and grief Define and differentiate between responsibility and accountability 4 factors that guarantee failure 4 factors that guarantee success Strategies for managing change 2 Hours

9 Step 6 to Building Resilience; Bullying strategies for managing conflict At the completion of this module the participant will be able to successfully manage any confrontational situation. Content Define bullying Effects of bullying What bullying looks like Characteristics of a bully My beliefs about bullies Strategies for managing conflict 2 Hours

10 Step 1 to Building Resilience; Performance Breakdown Model At the completion of this module the participant will be able to identify and understand how the learning process operates. Content Define and understand the grieving process Value and Belief systems 2 core emotions Define and understand the learning process Define and differentiate between motivation and inspiration Creation of self awareness and empowerment 1 Hours
