1 Surgery, Anaesthetics and Imaging Directorate The Magill Academic Clinical Fellow ICM JOB DESCRIPTION 1.0 Chelsea & Westminster Hospital The Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust comprises the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, and a number of services and clinics provided on the Charing Cross Hospital site and at the South Westminster Centre. The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is an acute general hospital with a large A&E Department and a total capacity of 550 beds. Surgical specialities include general, urological, orthopaedic, ophthalmic, plastic, paediatric/ neonatal, gynaecological surgery, and obstetrics. There is a dedicated Treatment Centre (incorporating a Hand Management Unit), Endoscopy Unit and a self-contained regional Burns Unit. It is a teaching hospital and provides clinical facilities for medical student education in association with Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. 2.0 The Magill Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care & Pain Management The Magill Department of Anaesthesia is a combined NHS and academic department, named after Sir Ivan Whiteside Magill, who was a pioneer of British anaesthesia and is best known for developing tracheal intubation and pulmonary anaesthesia. The NHS Magill Department is led by Dr Jackie Durbridge. There are 30 NHS consultants within the department with separate consultant rotas covering Intensive Care, General Surgical/Obstetric anaesthesia and Paediatric/Neonatal Anaesthesia. The Medical Simulation Centre is an integral component of this multi-disciplinary training unit. Some of the NHS anaesthetic staff have a sessional commitment to the Centre. The academic Magill Department is now part of the Section of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care (APMIC) at Imperial College London, led by Prof Masao Takata who is the Magill Chair in Anaesthetics at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The Section brings together clinical and basic scientists with a wide range of research interests and an emphasis on producing high-quality, high impact basic and translational research. The Section s strengths are derived from the wide range of members; from basic scientists, immunologists and physiologists, BSc, MSc, MD and PhD students to clinical academic foundation trainees, academic clinical fellows (ACFs), clinical lecturers and consultant anaesthetists, intensivists and pain doctors. The Section is mainly located at the Chelsea & Westminster (C&W) Campus (adjacent to the clinical department) but also has members at South Kensington (SK), Harefield (HF), Hammersmith (HH) and Charing Cross (CX) campuses. 2.1 The Post The post will commence in August 2014 and is designed for an anaesthetic trainee who is at least at the end of their CT2 and has obtained their Primary FRCA exam. Those in higher training (ST3 and above) will need to seek the approval of their Training Programme Director / Regional Advisor before applying. The post is appropriate for those who have a strong interest in and outstanding potential for a career in academic anaesthesia, pain medicine and intensive care, wishing to receive a solid research training and obtain data for a competitive, peer-reviewed research training fellowship application. The successful candidate is clinically based in the NHS Magill Department at the Chelsea & Westminster
2 Hospital, and academically based in the academic Magill Department of Imperial College London. Overall responsibility for the post will lie with Dr Michelle Hayes. The post would be for 6 months (renewable), but may be extended by mutual agreement; extension in order to undertake/register for a higher degree would be considered and could be arranged if deemed appropriate. Clinical duties will be based in burns theatres, the burns and general intensive care units and there will be a 1:8 on-call commitment with internal cover (full shift system). The remainder of the week will be dedicated to research. Training in data presentation and publication is readily provided within the department. 2.2 Research The Magill Department has a proven international reputation for producing high quality basic science, translational and clinical research. It participates in an increasing array of NIHR portfolio studies and clinical trials. The areas of particular expertise and interest include: Critical Care Research Inflammatory mechanisms of acute lung injury Leukocyte-endothelial interactions in organ injury Organ protection Innate immune system functions in perioperative, critical care and trauma patients Metabolic/molecular phenotyping and biomarkers Clinical trials in sepsis Anaesthesia and Neuroscience Research Molecular basis of anaesthesia Neurotoxicty/neuroprotection by anaesthetic agents Anaesthetics and cancer Organ injury in cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation Postoperative cognitive dysfunction and Alzheimer s disease Metabolic diseases and brain function Pain Research Mechanisms and treatment of neuropathic pain Inflammatory and burn pain and neuronal processing Further details about the research of the academic Magill Department are available at: and individual research interests in our academic dept booklet found here: The post holder will receive a solid research training under the umbrella of the Section of Anaesthetics at Imperial College London with a close collaboration with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and undertake a preliminary research project toward an application for a competitive, peerreviewed research training fellowship leading to the award of PhD or MD(Res) degrees. Research training/project will be organised by Prof Masao Takata, in a similar way to that for the current Walport NIHR-funded academic clinical fellows. Academic and/or clinical supervisors will be allocated to the post holder depending on the main emphasis of the project. It is anticipated that the project supervisor will meet with the post holder weekly and that a monthly meeting will take place with Prof Takata for academic guidance.
3 2.3 Education and Teaching The post holder will be an integral part of the team at the Hospital and expected to contribute to the teaching of doctors in training, midwives, medical students and other staff groups. Hospital medical staff have use of the main Library Unit at Imperial College. Hospital medical staff also have the use of the Medical School Library in the Reynolds Building, Charing Cross Hospital in addition to the Medical School Library situated on the lower ground floor of the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. An inter-library loan facility is also available. Study Leave is provided in accordance with the appropriate Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and National Handbooks. 2.3 Clinical Governance The post holder will be required to participate in the Trust s and Directorate s Clinical Governance activities.
