All delegates are asked to be seated ready to start at Venue: Conference Centre Nurses Mental and Emotional Health Theme: Mental and Emotional Health Presenter: Moira Maraun How do nurses ensure their own optimal mental health and how can they be certain what they are experiencing is objective and evidence based rather than subjective and anecdotal? Mental Health is defined as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community. In this session Moira will explore the merit of Nurses developing their own optimal mental health through establishing productive and resourceful mindsets Mad, bad, and sad: a historical perspective of nursing. Theme: Showcase of Care Delivery Presenter: Pam Savage In reviewing our past the question is raised for today s Nurses about taking responsibility for our roles and how we manage that in the present day health care setting. 2 World of Wounds: from a war zone to the tropics 2 hour Theme: The World of Wounds Presenter: Cheryl Dezotti There are multiple extrinsic factors that impact on wound development, management, and resolution. In this session Cheryl will identify a number of these factors and explore the application of contemporary wound management science in addressing these variables Break The Expanding Role of the Assistant Nurse Theme: Showcase of Care Delivery Nursing Innovation Presenter: Cheryl Manning Trends and issues keep changing in nursing practice and nursing roles. As a result, the traditional role of the Assistant in Nursing has been extended to include more responsibility and clinical skills. In this session Cheryl will discuss an education program to support the expanding role of the Assistant in Nursing using a simulation learning environment The P.A.R.T.Y. Program Theme: Public Health and Community Engagement Presenter: Nicki Pereira The PARTY (prevention of alcohol and risk related trauma in youth) program invited high school students for one day to ED, ICU, and trauma wards. Students interview a patient, see medical devices, instrumentation, simulations, pictures, scans, and see firsthand the trauma patients experience. Showcasing neurosurgical, orthopaedic, and spinal injuries and the sequelae of risk related behaviour. Nicki will discuss the program and preparing neurosurgical staff to host a P.A.R.T.Y. at Royal North Shore Hospital. Page 2 of 10

3 Do What I say not What I do Theme: Public Health and Community Engagement Presenter: Penny Heidke The aim of this presentation is to present results from a Master research by higher degree program that examined the prevalence of healthy and unhealthy behaviours in registered nurses (RNs). The research also sought to understand how these healthy and unhealthy behaviours impact on the health promotion they provide to patients they care for Networking and Reflection Session Meet with colleagues for informal discussion and reflection about the presentations that were delivered today. 4 Tuesday 23 rd September CPD Wound Assessment Theme: The World of Wounds Presenter: Cheryl Dezotti It is the Nurse s assessment skills that will determine the dressing product that is used and the outcome for the client. In this session Cheryl will review the process of Wound Assessment and discuss the application of same in the care setting An Overview of the Suicide Phenomena Theme: Mental and Emotional Health Presenter: Jason Dawson Around 2,000 Australians die from suicide each year this complex and tragic event is most often a result of a combination of risk factors including mental illness, social crisis, family issues, drugs & alcohol and law enforcement. In this session Jason will discuss the latest trends and statistics of suicide in Australia and look at the steps nurses can take to identify and support clients at risk of suicide What would you Eat for a Dare? Theme: Public Health and Community Engagement Presenter: Nicki Pereira In this session Nicki will present a case study of a young man who ate a slug for a dare and developed angiostrongyliasis- a form of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. The presentation will review public awareness of the risk of rat lung worm in the Australian population Coronial Rules: Theme: Public Health and Community Engagement Presenter: Pam Savage The Coroners Act 2000 explained. Test your knowledge and those of your team mates as we explore this very interesting topic. Venue: Spinnaker Lounge Friday 26 th September CPD VAC Therapy Theme: World of Wounds Presenter: Madonna Dorries Vacuum Assisted Wound Closure has been used in the clinical setting for some time. In this session Madonna will present the science behind the technology, how it works at a cellular level, how it promotes the healing environment, the indications and contraindications for V.A.C. use and case studies illustrating the healing stages using V.A.C. technology." Overcoming the Challenges: 12 hour nursing shifts Theme: Showcase of Care Delivery Nursing Innovation Presenter: Nicki Pereira In this session Nicki will discuss how the nursing team in her organisation reviewed clinical practice to formulate new processes for care delivery, nurse education, and nurse communication in the introduction of 12 hour shifts. 7 Collegiate Presence Theme: Showcase of Care Delivery Nursing Innovation Presenter: Marc Broadbent An innovation in improving care delivery through understanding interdisciplinary relationships. This presentation offers a theoretical construct in order to understand an innovative approach to interdisciplinary collaboration within the practice community known as collegiate presence. As a point of difference it is argued that interdisciplinary collaboration, as understood through the lens of collegiate presence, has cultural factors Relate the differences between Delirium, Depression, and Dementia to Clinical Practice Theme: Showcase of Care Delivery Nursing Innovation Presenter: Cheryl Manning With the increasing amount of staff required to special patients within the acute environment a need was identified to increase the knowledge of staff in the selection of appropriate strategies to address management issues and challenges in providing care to the patient with a cognitive impairment. Cheryl will present a study that examined whether participants involved in a package of education were able to transfer the theoretical knowledge gained into clinical practice Lunch Adult Health Implications from Childhood abuse Theme: Mental and Emotional Health Presenter: Betty Smith As adults we are all impacted by our early childhood experiences, some enrich our lives but many can be destructive. Early adverse traumatic events affect all aspects of life, health, and relationships. Betty will review the statistics and symptoms for adults from childhood abuse and how this impact on the people we interact with as nurses and midwives. She will present a case study of a woman through her first experience of pregnancy, childbirth, and the first months with her baby. Her journey was complicated and the foundation for the events she experienced occurred many years earlier. Understanding this connection nurses are better able to help survivors through their health challenges without causing further trauma. Page 7 of 10

8 The Impact of Morale in the Workplace Theme: Mental and Emotional Health Presenter: Carla Peters The impact of morale in the workplace and as a social interaction in the working environment has a major influence on how nurses function both at work and at home affecting nurses mental and emotional state of wellbeing. There has been much research into what influences nursing behaviour and feelings, however, very little has been conducted into nursing morale. Nursing morale is subjective as it is based upon the individual s perception and emotion of an event or action that results in either a positive or negative outcome. In this presentation Carla will discuss the variety of issues that impact on morale in the workplace and the 5 primary factors that can contribute to low morale Networking and Reflection Session Meet with colleagues for informal discussion and reflection. Conference Conclusion and Goodbye Join together as a group to celebrate Nursing and the fabulous conference that we have attended together. Venue: Spinnaker Lounge The Fabulous Conference Presenters: (in alphabetical order) Betty Smith RN, RM Betty identifies herself as having the privilege of being a long-term Registered Nurse and Midwife in a small country hospital. Her passion is working with women, who feel traumatized by their birthing experience, to start their healing journey. Carla Peters MNurs, BNurs, DipHE Adult Nursing, Cert IV Training and assessment, Diploma of Counselling. For many years I have worked in the field of Acute Medical Nursing and participated in nurse education to undergraduate nursing students. I am currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate exploring low morale in nursing. Cheryl Dezotti RN, MQIHC., Grad Dip QIHC., AFAAQHC, MACN Cheryl has been a registered nurse for 26 years and her Master Degree in Quality in Health Care has supported her passion for improving health care outcomes, particularly in the areas of wound care and infection control. Cheryl has lectured in Wound Care throughout Australia and Overseas and appreciates the myriad of challenges faced by nurses who are time, knowledge and resource limited. Cheryl s first ebook Wound Care Practical Tips the bits you need to Know reflects her practical understanding of what it is like to nurse in the real world. Page 8 of 10

9 Cheryl Manning RN, BN, MNurs, GCTT, GCMC, GCWM&PC&DC Cheryl is currently working as a Clinical Educator - Gerontic & Sub Acute, Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS-South).Cheryl holds various portfolios within the Health Service including AIN Clinical Skills Day and Dementia, Depression, and Delirium. Cheryl has worked in various Country, Regional and Metropolitan hospitals within Australia. This includes NUM of Acute and Aged Care environments. Cheryl is currently studying towards her M Nrg Science in Gerontology and Rehabilitation and Masters in Teaching and Learning. Jason Dawson RN, Bnurs Jason Dawson is a Registered Nurse from the Gold Coast Queensland. Whilst studying his bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University he developed an interest in mental health and has been working in this field of nursing since completing his studies in In this time Jason has undertaken varied roles including Acute Inpatient Nursing, Community Nursing, clinical facilitating and Nurse Unit Manager positions. In 2012 Jason combined his passion for nursing with his love of travel and founded CPD Cruise Pty Ltd with the view to providing Nurses the opportunity to update and improve their skills in diverse and unique locations. Madonna Dorries Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 nursing) Cert IV (Aged Care), Cert IV in Business (Frontline Management), Cert III in Dental Assisting Madonna has worked in health care for over 30 years beginning in the Dental world, and then moving in more recent years to Aged Care for 16 years. She completed her Graduate Nurse Program at St Andrew's Private Hospital Toowoomba in 2012, and is currently working in the Orthopaedic and Paediatric units of the facility. Madonna has a keen interest in wound care and in particular the use of V.A.C. Therapy. Marc Broadbent RN, CCRN, PhD, Med, MACMHN, FoACN Marc trained as a Registered Nurse in 1984 and subsequently developed broad experience in critical care and emergency nursing with his main area of expertise being in trauma and emergency nursing with a specialised knowledge of emergency triage. He has worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator, and Nurse Manager in emergency departments within Australia and overseas. Marc has published and presented both nationally and internationally in the area of emergency mental health triage and has completed a PhD examining the factors that affect the relationship between ED and mental health triage nurses. His work has been cited as best available evidence for the triage of clients with mental illness in the National Emergency Triage Training Kit. Marc is a member of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses, a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing and Associate Editor Mental Health for the Australasian Emergency Nursing Journal. Moira Maraun RN, CMHN, MHSc (curriculum design, implementation, evaluation), Master Practitioner NLP, Certified Trainer NLP Moira has worked for many years in senior clinical nursing roles in Mental Health and Aged Care. Moira is now a private Nurse Consultant conducting workshops to promote high quality communication between nurses, clients, and carers in aged care facilities that influence optimal health and care outcomes for the clients of those services. Moira also provides Clinical Supervision and individual sessions for nursing clients. In 2014, Moira will provide restorative retreats for nurses and NLP certification courses for nurses. 10 Nicki Pereira RN Nicki commenced at Royal North Shore Hospital in 1982 and has continued to work there since. She has worked in Neurology, managed the Casual Pool, relieved as Acting Director of Nursing after hours, worked over 20 years in Neurosurgery, and has been the Clinical Nurse Educator in that unit for the last 7 years. Her passion is facilitating education in neurosurgery and encouraging nurses to attend conferences. Pam Savage RN, BA (Maq), DipN (Lon), MHPEd (UNSW), DipLaw (Syd), EdDoc (CQU) Pam has an extensive background in clinical nursing, education, and remote area nursing both in Australia and overseas. As a Lawyer and Clinician this background is brought to her role as adjunct Lecturer to undergraduate and post graduate students as well as Aboriginal Health Workers. Pam is a published author and her book Law for Student Nurses: applied principles is now in its second edition. Penny Heidke RN, BN, GDL&T Penny completed her BN in 1994, and has since subsequently developed broad experience in critical care and general nursing with her main area of expertise being in trauma and operating theatre nursing with specialised knowledge of orthopaedics. She has worked as a Clinical Nurse; school based Youth Health Nurse and Clinical Manager of a Medical Practice within Queensland before commencing as an academic with CQUniversity. She is currently completing her Masters of Health Science and has a keen interest in public health and epidemiology. Penny is a member of the Australian Critical Care Nurses and the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses. Sue Walker RN, BN, BN(admin), MPHC, MACN Sue has a broad clinical background that covers both the public and private sectors in acute and chronic care delivery. Health care management became one of her great passions and she believes that the success of an organisation is a direct reflection on the ability and skill of the management team. This passion, and luck in finding a like minded colleague in Cheryl Dezotti, led to the creation of Health Services Evolution in 2005 and the formation of the Nurses for Nurses Network in As one of the Directors of Health Services Evolution Sue finds herself in the wonderful position to be able to assist a number of organisations and colleagues in the care of others the mantra to make a difference to the person in the bed is what drives the work of the practice. Her role with the Nurses for Nurses Network allows her to bring an exceptional information service to her nursing colleagues and have some fun.
