In this issue of RAA Review we continue to celebrate the joy and pride in welcoming Roy scholars from around the globe to the Workshops and Conference held on the Boston College campus in June We hope that the coverage in this edition will bring happy memories for many and encourage you and many others to join us for the spring 2010 Workshops and Conference. We have responded to your comments and made some changes in the schedule to allow some social time together on the evening you arrive. The Executive Board has carefully planned the workshops to have a common introduction and you will have the opportunity to attend all three workshops. Our conference theme is meant to be inclusive so that many scholars will see their work fitting in, yet the theme provides unity to multiple studies. We are also announcing a new category for our award papers. We will honor the memory of our friend and colleague, Susan Pollock, with an award for research in chronic health. This was Susan s field of research with the significant contribution of the Health-Related Hardiness Scale. The work is more timely than ever. We hope many will consider submitting abstracts for both papers and posters. The level of scholarship has increased each year and we are hoping this year will again raise that level once again. Asking for your feedback about conference frequency, continued on page 5

2 Ketsarin Utriyaprasit, Prangtip Chpayaput, Orapan Thosingha & Somsong Bootcheewan (all from Thailand) with Sr. Callista Roy Stacey Barone, Kathy Lauchner, Brigitte Cypress & Martha Whetsell at the registration desk Notes from the 10th Annual RAA Workshop and Conference Boston College June 12 & 13, 2009 The Roy Adaptation Association hosted its tenth annual workshop and conference on the beautiful Boston College campus June 12 and 13th, Close to 60 nurse scholars, nursing students and nurse professionals came together as an internationally diverse group of conference attendees. There was an exceptional group of nurse scholars from Mexico, over 15 of our new members traveled to Boston to deliver award posters and presentations as well as to be welcomed as members of the two new RAA Chapters, one in Nuevo Laredo and one in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The theme of the 2009 Conference, Transforming Nursing s Future: Dynamics of Roy Adaptation Model Knowledge, attracted many quality scholarly abstract submissions and the Abstract Review Committee worked diligently to choose 8 exceptional award papers, including the Student Award paper, given to Rungnapha Khiewchaum a doctoral student at Mahidol University in Thailand, and the first Theorist Theme Award Paper, given to Professor Lois Angelo for her creative and dynamic teaching methods using the Roy Adaptation Model. The RAA Executive Board members along with Dr. Jacqueline Fawcett and Dr. Susan Fowler lead three positively reviewed Workshops designed to deliver expert information on the most sought after aspects of the Roy Adaptation Model. The three themes were: Informatics and Inclusion of Nursing Concepts; Role Function Challenges for Today s Students and Nurses: A Roy Adaptation Model Analysis; Developing a Roy Adaptation Research Study. The comfortable atmosphere of the Boston College campus, the welcoming community environment at the opening night reception and the prominent presence of Sr. Callista Roy were all noted positively in the 2009 conference evaluations. Even as we use these pages to look back on our last meeting, planning is underway to make the 2010 Conference, planned for June 18 and 19th at Boston College, another successful opportunity for our members to meet, share ideas, and learn more about the Roy Adaptation Model. Franciso Cadena Santos, Keville Frederickson, Blaire Wouter Jones, Sr. Callista Roy and Sr. Callista Roy, Martha Whetsell, and Ashley Boon at the Poster session. Moises Padron at the Awards cermony Workshop attendees with leaders Jacqui Fawcett and Keville Frederickson.

5 In Memory of Dr. Susan Pollack founding member Remembrance of Dr. Susan Pollock of Roy Adaptation Association With deep sadness we let our members know that our dear friend and colleague, Susan Pollock died August 23, 2009 in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Her memorial Eucharist was celebrated on August 29 at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Port Saint Lucie with internment in the Church Memorial Garden as Susan wished. Three members of the Executive Board, Sr. Callista Roy, Kathy Lauchner and Martha Whetsell participated in the Remembrance of Susan during the service. The Roy Adaptation Association made a contribution to her church s Building Fund in Susan s honor, as requested. In addition the Executive Board has created a Susan Pollock Research Award in Chronic Illness to be given at the Annual RAA meeting. Since Susan first called Sr. Callista in 1991 about the idea of getting together a group of researchers using the Roy Adaptation Model, she has always contributed generously of her talents to the growth of our work and the organization. She raised our standards of scholarship and was part of creating the fun times we share. We will miss Susan, her friendship, ideas, and laughter. May our dear friend and colleague, Susan Pollock, rest in peace. For those wishing to contribute, checks may be sent to the RAA marked on memo line for the Susan Pollock Award fund. Thoughts from the Thorist continued... Asking for your feedback about conference frequency: The Board has briefly discussed the possibility of giving the Roy Adaptation Association Conference biannually rather than every year. We like very much coming together once a year and we will be happy to continue this pattern if our members prefer this. However, some may find it more economically feasible to plan a major trip every two years and to use the alternative year for Chapter or Regional events. Perhaps Executive Board members could be available for these events. We would also work with Emily Caskey Keen, our Executive Director to continue efforts for more membership contact between conferences. Another advantage is that Board Members would have some extra time to complete the current 15-year Review of Roy Adaptation Model Based Research. Please send your comments about the frequency of RAA meeting in USA to emily.caskey@bc.edu. The Board will review the issue in January so that you will have time to make long range plans for travel. If a change is made, please do join us in June 2010 and we can discuss together how best to connect until the next Conference in June Our priority is to meet the needs of our members, please do let us know what you think.
