Central Line SPRING 2017 WCO-ONS ONS BOARD WEST CENTRAL OHIO ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY President Becky Collins RN, BSN, OCN, CHPN President Elect Secretary Jan Rafferty RN, MS, OCN Treasurer Darla Subler RN, OCN Scholarships Joyce R Russo RN, OCN Joyce.russo@us.af.mil Programs LaDonna Hinkle RN, MSN, OCN Ladonna.hinkle@att.net Historian, Outreach Ohio Liaison, Political Advocacy Mary Murphy RN, MS, AOCN, ACHPN Mem1050@woh.rr.com Program Committee, Member-at-Large Nan Lawary, RN, BSN, OCN miznan@yahoo.com Liaison Coordinator, Membership Karen Agnor, RN, BSN, CHPN Karen.ragnor@gmail.com Community Outreach Elena Mikalauskas RN, MS, OCN, AOCNS emmikalauskas@mvh.org PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Becky Collins RN, BSN, OCN, CHPN Here s the quote: To be successful you have to ignore the little voice that makes you think you are an impostor ONS Leadership Here s the follow-up to that quote: We are all worthy and right where we need to be Dr Anne Katz, Editor of Oncology Nursing Forum I ve been to several ONS Congress Events. All were amazing and I learned a lot. This year really focused on leadership. Yes, there were educational offerings and pharma dinners (one such dinner with Patrick Dempsey, but that s another story and it s a good story too!). But leadership was at the forefront of this Congress. And it is time. Nurses have been leaders in the medical arena for a while now. A nurse started the organization where I currently work. In our area, nurses have been promoted to CEO s of hospital systems, Presidents of health care suppliers, and Vice-Presidents of large Pharma institutions. There s now an organized effort to have nurses as board members in the community. This didn t happen by chance. It didn t happen because we are super nice (and we can be at times). Nurses are in leadership roles because we exemplify what it is to be a leader. What makes a good leader; makes a good nurse. Nominations Kelly Nader, RN Kelly.nader@va.org Virtual Community Administrator Member-at-Large Susie Newton, RN, MS, AOCN, AOCNS Snewton23@hotmail.com 1. Good leaders have high emotional-intelligence. *That s a nurse. 2. Good leaders can multi-task. *Yes, that s a nurse. 3. Good leaders can prioritize. *Again, describes a Nurse. 4. Good leaders are highly motivated and intelligent. *Very much what nurses are! Wait, to be a leader, do you have to have a title? Answer is, nope. Have you helped change a policy at work? Have you listened closely to what your patient PRESIDENT S needs? Are you an MESSAGE advocate? Do CONTINUED you work together as a team for the common good of the patient? Well my fellow nurse, you are a leader! Reason number TWO: Access to ONS s mentoring program, which is a formal mentoring program for oncology nurse professionals and includes a ****continued student newsletter along next with discount page**** rates. Reason Number ONE: Survival of the local Nevada chapter. ONS has been a leader of cancer nursing care since It provides information and education to nurses

So dismiss any self-doubt. Whatever you want to do with your career, remember you are a trained leader. You are a NURSE. If you have any suggestions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (937) or via at rcollins@hospiceofdayton.org. To All WCO-ONS ONS Members Submitted By: Becky Collins, RN, BSN, OCN, CHPN To all WCO-ONS members: This is so important, we are putting this on the front page! Your membership to ONS allows you FREE access to inpractice website. This website is amazing! Don t believe me.allow me to explain further. 1. You have FREE access to full articles under PubMed! You can use this to reference EBP for presentations and/or policy changes! Find best practices right at your fingertips! Normally such articles will require payment or college based web access, but on inpractice you have access by being an ONS member. 2. You have FREE access to over 59 hours of CNE s! Free.ILNA points can be obtained here. Practice for OCN certification it s all here and FREE! 3. You can reference current medication! Look up side effects and usage of oncology medications. When you search for a medication.articles regarding this medication also come up! 3. It s also offered on all mobile devices! Have it all right on your phone! If you haven t looked into this option, please do so. I can tell you that finding access to quality articles is difficult, and costly. Not to mention up-to-date medication reference. I invite any WCO-ONS member to try out this website/app and give us a review. Personally, I loved the fact I can look up EBP articles. We need to hear from other members as well. Looking forward to your input! Contact Mary Murphy at ext Go green as efforts are made to carpool to the event with other members Calling All Members Submitted ted by: Karen Agnor, RN, BSN It s time once again for our RN licenses renewal, and part of our CEU requirements include an Ohio legal CEU. Our June program will offer just that and it will be held on June 15th at Hospice of Dayton. In order to spark awareness in any oncology nurses out there who may be interested in joining our chapter, the board has decided to extend to all WCO current members an opportunity to bring one guest to this June program and both the member and her guest will attend free of charge. However, when making the reservation, the member must register for both her and her guest.

Our mentors have a very important role within our chapter structure. They serve our current members, as well as perspective members, and act as a communication extension of the chapter board, our newsletter and web site. We certainly appreciate their efforts and do hope you will recognize the role that they play within your work site. Another reminder to all members - ONS now welcomes all student nurses pursuing a BSN to access a free ONS membership, including free chapter membership while they are in school. They may attend one free chapter program and then attend others for a $10 fee. Quite an opportunity for a student and an excellent way to expose these students to the world of oncology! Thank you all for all that you do each day, serving patients, families and health care colleagues. The 2017 ONS theme - FEARLESS COMMITMENT - ENDLESS COMPASSION certainly applies to every one of you as you serve so many and touch so many lives! Community Outreach Update Submitted By Elena Mikalauskas, rn, ms, ocn, aocns The proceeds of the 50/50 raffle & the WCO-ONS Treasury supporting our community January $100 to Ohio s Hospice February $120 to Schneider House of Hope for Women and Displaced Families March $100 to St. Vincent DePaul April $100 to American Cancer Society Relay for Life Events The first quarter of 2017 we donated $420 to local organizations! Love Your Chapter 2017 Submitted ted by: Karen Agnor, RN, BSN As we celebrate Oncology Nursing Month, WCO once again focused on our own members with the annual Love Your Chapter program on Thursday evening, May 18th. The ONS theme for this year is Oncology Nurses...Fearless Commitment, Endless Compassion. To paraphrase ONS tribute, they recognize that the oncology nurse is truly committed to provide excellent and seamless care to oncology patients, their families, as well as the entire healthcare team. You are there to explain the diagnosis, guide them through treatment, celebrate their victories, and comfort them through the unimaginable. No matter what, you provide fearless commitment and endless compassion to your patients every day. That's why we celebrate you, the oncology nurse, this month and every other month. Our program this year was held at NCR Country Club with a dinner program befitting the fine professional, caring members of our chapter. The program was titled "Leadership and Career Development" presented by our own Susie Newton, RN, MS, AOCN, AOCNS. Susie presented three topics: Goal Setting, Creating a Development Plan, and Getting the Job You Want. As Vice President of Health Management Solutions, she

was able to relate many personal and professional tips to the group, and Susie also encouraged group participation, allowing members to relate their own personal experiences pertinent to the subject matter being discussed. Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of our WCO annual Alice Jordan Mentorship Award. This award was established in 2010 as a tribute to Alice Jordan, a well-respected WCO member who mentored many individuals during her oncology career here in Dayton before her passing. This year s recipient is Joyce Russo, RN, OCN, a well- respected clinician and mentor, and WCO Scholarship Coordinator. Joyce serves as an Oncology Research nurse at Wright Patterson AFB. Her duties include, but are not limited to, administration of chemotherapy, working on clinical trials, developing and providing patient education, and training in-patient nurses. Needless to say, Joyce serves as a mentor to many - colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members - just to name a few. A well-deserved award for an outstanding oncology nurse! Let the recognition of all of our members, as well as of nurses everywhere, not be confined to one month a year. Thank you for all that you do, as you touch so many lives each day!

Nurses Week 2017 Our own Mary Murphy as Florence Nightingale with Clara Barton by her side during the Zeta Phi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau international Nightingale Tea ONS Congress Highlights Susie Newton, RN, MS, AOCN, AOCNS This Congress seemed to be the year of immunotherapy. There were multiple courses on new drug therapies and most of them addressed harnessing the immune system to fight various cancers. Here are a few highlights from one of my favorite courses: There are 3 classes of immune checkpoint inhibitors: 1. Anti CTLA4: Yervoy (ipilimumab) 2. Anti PD-1: Opdivo and Keytruda 3. Anti PDL-1: Tecentriq Class side effects of these agents include: risk for enterocolitis, risk for pneumonitis (be cautious of a cough or shortness of breath), hepatitis (monitor AST, ALT, and bilirubin), and dermatitis (monitor for rash and pruritis).

CAR-T agents will be a new class of immune therapy. It stands for chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. How it works: T cells are collected from the patient via apheresis, reengineered is a lab, multiplied, and reinfused in the patient. Sometimes chemotherapy is also given. The CAR-T cells remain in the body long after the infusion and help protect against recurrence. There are no approved therapies yet, but 3 companies are working toward FDA approval. Oncolytic viral therapies. These agents can be used as a vector to deliver a therapy or can act as a therapy themselves. There is one approved agent: TVEC or Imlygic, approved for the treatment of melanoma. The drug is an intradermal injection that gets injected directly into the melanoma lesion. The first dose is a non-treatment in order to obtain sero-conversion. Dose 2 is injected 3 weeks later and then every 2 weeks thereafter. Class side effects include flu-like symptoms and cellulitis. The treatment of cancer is certainly changing very rapidly. There seem to be new approvals nearly every month. It is up to us as oncology nurses to stay abreast of the new therapies, be aware of how they work and how they are administered, and to teach our patients what to expect and what to report. Safety Corner Submitted by: Elena Mikalauskas, RN, MS, OCN, AOCNS Our local chapter utilizes the ONS Voice electronic publications at our monthly education offerings to assist in safety awareness. The March 3, 2017, ONS Voice, Sepsis Identification and Early Goal Directed Therapy by Kathleen Wiley RN, MSN, AOCNS was the topic for our March event. Infection represents a leading cause of death and treatment related toxicities among patients with cancer in the United States. It stands to interfere with antineoplastic treatment plans ( by forcing dose modifications, delays, or discontinuation and instead turning to less aggressive treatment plan. Early sepsis recognition and implementation of early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) represents the most promise for preventing sepsis-

related morbidity and mortality ( Management requires aggressive, interdisciplinary care, and timely communication of patient status and response to treatment. The April 3, 2017, ONS Voice, Competencies Create Expert, Accountable Nurses Delivering Quality Care by Chris Pirschel, ONS staff writer was the topic for our April event. In an oncology setting, patients and families rely on nurses in many ways that are unique to cancer care. Acting as educators, translators, care providers, and a patient s lifeline requires oncology nurses to maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise. By applying nursing competencies, oncology nurses will meet recommended levels of safety in nursing practice. This entails learning the competencies of care for patients with cancer, navigating interdisciplinary team work, and integrating safety standards in practice, among a litany of other responsibilities required to deliver evidence-based oncology nursing care. ONS does a great job supporting nursing competencies they have the core competencies for the generalist, specific competencies such as the nurse navigator competencies, and leadership competencies, Gaguski says. Oncology nurses can access professional organizations such as ONS to learn more about competency and competency development. Ultimately, patients with cancer call on their nurses in countless ways and regularly relay on their knowledge and expertise throughout the cancer journey. Achieving mastery in oncology nursing care through continued competency assessment, validation, education, and training leads to safe practice, quality care and continuous professional and personal development for oncology nurses. Our very own President Becky Collins has been selected to be on the Editorial Board for the ONCC Newsletter Congratulations to Mary Murphy for her nomination by the Better Business Bureau s 2017 Women in Business Networking as one of the top 25 Women to Watch 2018 Congress The 43 rd Annual Congress is May 17 20, 2018 in Washington, DC For those looking ahead to 2019, the 44 th Annual Congress will be held in Anaheim, CA from April 11 14, 2019

Political updates By Mary Murphy, rn, ms, aocn, achpn WCO Political advocacy Chairperson HPNA State Ambassador From ONS Articles of Interest, Alec Stone, May 19, 2017: Meet Scott Gottlieb, MD, New FDA Commissioner From FDA.gov: Scott Gottlieb, MD, is a physician, medical policy expert, and public health advocate who previously served as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration s (FDA s) deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs and before that, as a senior advisor to the FDA commissioner. He also worked on implementation of the Medicare drug benefit as a senior advisor to the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where he supported policy work on quality improvement and the agency s coverage process, particularly as it related to new medical technologies. Read the opening remarks from the new commissioner. ONS Perspective: Scott Gottlieb, MD, returned to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the new commissioner earlier this week. Having served previously as the deputy commissioner to medical and scientific affairs, he s familiar with the agency and lauds the FDA s work as it protects Americans from faulty claims, treatments, and devices. This is an excellent message to federal employees who have dedicated their careers to the FDA as an oversight guardian. It also reassures members of Congress that Gottlieb is ready to act in the best interests of the American people. Moreover, members of Congress understand that he s a professional healthcare expert at the helm of a very public, as-seen-on-tv-nightly agency and will not rock the boat in the coming months. From tobacco to cancer drugs, the FDA with its relatively small $5 billion budget has great authority over the oncology environment. ONS has a strong relationship with the FDA, and oncology nurses must continue to educate federal regulators on cancer issues under the new administration.

Capitol Hill Days was such a success in 2016 that ONS will again bring 100 oncology nurses from across the country to the nation s capital to advocate for patients and families on important health related issues. Capitol Hill days are scheduled for Wednesday September 6 and Thursday September 7 th. Attendees will earn continuing nurse education and learn about advocacy, the current political environment, CMS and the Oncology Care Model as well as ONS S policy agenda. Attendees will be prepared to discuss current house and senate bills with their assigned state representative or senators. Last year Jan Rafferty and I represented Dayton along with two other nurses from Ohio. It was a very amazing experience of networking and the knowledge that the power of nursing does exist in Washington DC. In addition, to meeting our Ohio representatives and senators we were fortunate to meet former Vice President Biden who spoke about his value and passion for nursing Consider taking time to apply for this wonderful opportunity. Applications are available at the ONS site under Advocacy and Policy (Capitol Hill Days). Make your voice heard for oncology nursing. A Good Read Take some time to read America s Bitter Pill by Steven Brill. Brill is the award winner of the 2014 National Magazine Award for Public Interest and a well know author on public health affairs. The book is an excellent overview of the Affordable Care Act its past development and future changes. Brill, interviews former president Obama, drug lobbyists, insurance companies and those actively involved in its attempted over haul. In addition, there are candid interviews with patients and their personal experience dealing with health care reform issues. Nurses will particularly be interested in his own personal experience as he underwent urgent open heart surgery. For all of us this might be an opportunity to expand our reading to the political side and a view away from the bedside.
