1 Central Line SUMMER 2015 WCO-ONS ONS BOARD WEST CENTRAL OHIO ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY President Becky Collins RN, BSN, OCN, CHPN Immediate Past President Jill Reese RN, BSN, OCN PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Becky Collins RN, BSN, OCN, CHPN Secretary Jan Rafferty RN, MS, OCN JPRRex@gmail.com Treasurer Darla Subler RN, OCN bdsubler@gmail.com Scholarships Robin L Arthur RN, BSN, OCN Rdreamer67@yahoo.com Programs LaDonna Hinkle RN, MSN, OCN Ladonna.hinkle@att.net Historian, Outreach Ohio Liaison, Political Advocacy Mary Murphy RN, MS, AOCN, ACHPN Mem1050@woh.rr.com Program Committee, Member-at-Large Nan Lawary, RN, BSN, OCN miznan@yahoo.com Liaison Coordinator, Membership Karen Agnor, RN, BSN, CHPN Karen.ragnor@gmail.com Community Outreach Elena Mikalauskas RN, MS, OCN, AOCNS emmikalauskas@mvh.org Nominations Julie Strohminger, RN, OCN jstrohminger@woh.rr.com Virtual Community Administrator Member-at-Large Susie Newton, RN, MS, AOCN, AOCNS Snewton23@hotmail.com Oh the places you will go with ONS! Just back from the Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh. Oncology nurses came from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii to attend the weekend course. So much was covered in such a short time. Over 120 Chapters attended the Parade of Chapters event on the opening night and raised $48, for the ONS Foundation. We discussed involvement of younger nurses in chapters and reviewed all the opportunities for awards and grants via the ONS Foundation. New changes to the Chemotherapy and Biotherapy courses along with professional development options awaiting for oncology nurses were also presented. So much information! Talking to nurses from such workplaces as Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dana Farber, and Mayo Clinic, along with having productive discussions with chapters that have over 1000 members to those that have 50 really highlighted the conference. One thing that rang true, throughout the whole event, was that Oncology Nurses are quite awesome. Nurses in general are amazing people but out of all the nursing specialties Oncology Nurses really stand out. As a group, Oncology Nurses are just more welcoming.more open and friendly.and the absolute best at having a good time. Even when we were competing for a little 5 dollar gift card, we supported everyone that was playing the game.and we are a competitive bunch believe me! We all laughed when the Improv Group at opening night did a skit at our expense, and we applauded when one of our own proved to be just a funny PRESIDENT S as the professional MESSAGE actors! We CONTINUED all groaned every time the issues with the Virtual Community was addressed, and clapped Reason number TWO: Access to ONS s mentoring program, which is a formal mentoring program for oncology nurse professionals and includes a student newsletter along with discount rates. Reason Number ONE: Survival of the local Nevada continued chapter. on next page. ONS has been a leader of cancer nursing care since It provides information and education to nurses

2 when the ONS staff presented that (finally) new changes to the system will be coming in 2016! I know that I say it a lot, but it deserves to be stated again and again..there s a reason that in the past 15 years Oncology Nurses have constantly been voted the Most Trusted Health Care Providers.Oncology Nurses are Amazingly Awesome! Thank you again for all that you do for your patients, their caregivers, and your co-workers. Also, please consider your role in the chapter and in ONS, because I know the next leader in the Oncology Nursing Society in currently listed in our chapter roster.is it you? If you have any suggestions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (937) or via at rcollins@hospiceofdayton.org. Gretchen Trunk Hats Off to Our Liaisons Submitted by Karen Agnor, RN, BSN, CHPN Ever wonder how an organization comprised of members from all over a geographic area gets information out to everyone? No doubt you would think immediately of , web sites, and even good old snail mail. WCO has the perfect answer to enhance the above methods of communication - our chapter liaisons! These nurses are our representatives in numerous facilities and offices. They coordinate with members via posted newsletters, program flyers and other pertinent WCO/ONS information, available for all oncology staff on site as well. They will also follow up with perspective members regarding national and chapter mission and philosophy, educational opportunities and programs and membership information. Liaisons also serve as resource nurses for oncology nursing-related information inquiries, as well as for the oncology nurse certification process. Please remember: To check with your site liaison if you have any questions or if any of your colleagues are interested in our chapter and its activities.

6 As an ONS/WCO member, you may bring an interested nurse or nursing student to a program as your guest. When you register for the program please register for the guest as well. CMS to test concurrent coverage of hospice and curative care: Terminally ill patients no longer will have to give up curative treatment to receive Medicare-paid hospice care, under a limited new program the CMS will start testing with 140 hospice providers as early as January. The Medicare Care Choices Model will test whether Medicare beneficiaries and dually eligible Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries who are eligible for hospice benefits will enroll in hospice in greater numbers if they could also continue to receive curative services, the CMS said Monday. The test also will evaluate whether the combination of hospice and curative care changes patients' quality of care and patient and family satisfaction. m_source=modernhealthcare&utm_medium= &utm_content= news &utm_campaign=hits Medicare and Medicaid mark a milestone: Only weeks after Obamacare survived a Supreme Court challenge, Medicare and Medicaid mark a significant milestone: July 30 will be the 50th anniversary of the law that created them. Four health-care experts connected with Princeton University and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (and other institutions) take this moment to produce what amounts to a written roundtable discussion: Medicare and Medicaid at 50: America s Entitlement Programs in the Age of Affordable Care. The 16 essays in this collection include histories of how the programs were conceived, developed and legislated; analysis of how they were reshaped and transformed in the 1970s and 80s; discussion of how over the years they have remade political agendas and the health-care industry; and predictions about their future. utm_medium= &utm_content= &_hsenc=p2anqtz-- c_pngbshsvcz9kvvybmlpzfknfszj9lj208jx7xxzdohslf736rnie5lnp8mgwaawalzwyks7ki kvvi7i_9h4j1ljrm2wwqo6-gts4y97abdkaw0&_hsmi=

12 Despite Gains In Advance Directives, Study Finds More Intensive End-Of-Life Cancer Care: Conversations about end-of-life care are difficult. But even though most people now take some steps to communicate their wishes, many may still receive more intensive care than they would have wished, a study< this month found. The study< published online in JAMA Oncology, examined survey data from the Health and Retirement Study, a national study of U.S. residents older than age 50. Researchers analyzed the responses from the next of kin, usually a spouse or child, of 1,985 participants with cancer who died between 2000 and &utm_content= &_hsenc=p2anqtz-- 7HWx_OJeZTY3KO_dmeqC_6h8bBEjqUG8DyZDz_ZUJI6KUrfn5asEVhVLde5pVZc92kYBf2WDI TQapzulMJ85nblIjgEHWQ6ENhojClOWyqLTX7fM&_hsmi= In Support of a Patient-Driven Initiative and Petition to Lower the High Price of Cancer Drugs: The high prices of cancer drugs are affecting the care of patients with cancer and our health care system.1 In the United States, the average price of new cancer drugs increased 5- to 10-fold over 15 years, to more than $100,000 per year in A study by Howard et al2 documented the escalation in cancer drug prices by an average of $8500 a year over the past 15 years. The cost of drugs for each additional year lived (after adjusting for inflation) has increased from $54,000 in 1995 to $207,000 in This increase is causing harm to patients with cancer and their families. VA Nursing Academic Partnerships VA Nursing Academic Partnerships (VANAP< a collaborative program between VA facilities and nursing schools, offers students a comprehensive clinical experience with a focus on Veteran care. Currently in its 2nd year with 25 locations nationwide, the program develops a mutually beneficial relationship; students receive intensive clinical training, while supplying Veterans Health Administration a source of top-notch nurses to best serve our Veterans. HHS launches multi-pronged effort to combat opioid abuse The opioid crisis is affecting communities across the country. Deaths from drug overdose have risen steadily over the past two decades and have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Prescription drugs, especially opioid analgesics a class of prescription drugs such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine and methadone used to treat both acute and chronic pain have increasingly been implicated in drug overdose deaths over the last decade. From 1999 to 2013, the rate for drug poisoning deaths involving opioid analgesics nearly

13 quadrupled. Deaths related to heroin have also increased sharply since 2010, with a 39 percent increase between 2012 and Given these alarming trends, it is time for a smart and sustainable response to prevent opioid abuse and overdose and to treat people with opioid use disorder. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ASC CAN) is also seeking volunteers to support a variety of advocacy initiatives. Opportunities can be as simple as joining ASC CAN and receiving s, to write a congressman, to serving on committees or receiving training as part of the Ambassador Constituent Team (ACT). Interested? Contact your local ACS or Google acscan.org to become a member. Cancer Treatment Parity Act Lisa Schulmeister, RN, MN, APRN-BC, OCN, FAAN Published Online: Tuesday, July 14, 2015 On June 11, 2015, Congress introduced the Cancer Treatment Parity Act of 2015, which helps equalize patient out-of-pocket costs for oral chemotherapy and makes the out-ofpocket costs similar to those for parenteral chemotherapy. The legislation would require health insurance plans that cover parenteral chemotherapy to provide equally favorable coverage for oral chemotherapy. In a statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network President (ACS CAN) Christopher Hansen commented, ACS CAN applauds Senators Kirk (R-IL) and Franken (D-MN) and Representatives Lance (R-NJ) and Higgins (D- NY) for spearheading this important, bipartisan legislation that has the potential to remove barriers to critical treatments by ensuring patients and their oncologists can continue to decide on a course of treatment based on what is best for the patient, not by what is covered by insurance. ACS CAN is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. The next, and most difficult step, is getting this legislation passed. Contact your representatives, who can be located by entering your address at There s no question that there is support for this legislation from patients and healthcare providers; however, there are concerns that insurance companies may lobby against it. - See more at: 3b_Unsponsored_ #sthash.k3aB7ZtK.dpuf
