1 An award winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers From The President & CEO Scott Batulis President & CEO This has been another excellent year for our organization filled with many prestigious awards and milestone accomplishments. We should all be very proud of the positive impact we have had on patient care and the broader community. Working in the Most Beautiful Hospital in the country further demonstrates how far we have come together over the years and how our achievements are the direct result of the wonderful people who work here. September 2017 Healthgrades 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award For us to continue to reach above and beyond and to be the best healthcare system we can be, we need to have a work environment and culture that enables people to perform at their very best every single day. Each year at this time we conduct an employee engagement survey to learn, from you, what we are doing well and how we can be better. Your participation (your vote) is very important, so please take a few minutes and complete your engagement survey. We will again partner with Gallup to launch our engagement survey on October 16, You will receive a survey invitation in the mail at your residence. The invitation contains your unique employee code that allows you to participate by phone or on the web. Should you have any questions about our engagement survey, please ask your Manager or contact Naomi Lippin, Manager of Organizational Development and Learning at (845) Sincerely, Scott Batulis President and CEO Reminder: Annual Education Must Be Completed By November 30 Orange Regional is a recipient of the Healthgrades 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award. This designation places Orange Regional among the top 10% of hospitals in the nation for its excellent performance in protecting patients from serious complications during their hospital stays. Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive physician and hospital information, evaluated approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Orange Regional Medical Center was one of only eleven hospitals in New York State to receive this award. During the study period, Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average over 40% less likely to have a serious complication during their hospital stay. To learn more about our standards of quality, visit

3 Connections September 2017 Congratulations Jennifer Harker, BSN, RN, CPN, CPEN, CPST has become Orange Regional s first Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN). Currently, more than 4,200 nurses hold the CPEN certification. Earning your CPEN credential demonstrates that you have extensive experience and the knowledge and abilities related to pediatric emergency nursing care beyond basic Registered Nurse licensure. Jennifer has worked at Orange Regional for seven years and in the Children's Emergency Department for four years. She can be reached at jharker@ghvhs.org. Congratulations to Orange Regional's Security Department for earning the 2017 Second Quarter Team Award, which is given out through our Being Exceptional Everyday (BEE) Program! This department was recently recognized for going above and beyond for the special care they provide to many of our emergency room patients. Often they are called upon to give special attention to patients coming through the Access Center. They are also very instrumental in assisting with trauma and high elopement-risk patients. The past several months have been especially busy. Security has been called upon more than usual to assist and has been exceptional and proficient. Thank you, Security Team! Employee Health and Wellness Corner Flu Vaccines Are Here An annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from flu. It takes about two weeks following vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body, so make plans to get vaccinated in early fall before flu season begins. Employee Health will be visiting various departments throughout the hospital with flu vaccines, however visiting the office is helpful. For staff members age 65 and over, a high dose vaccine is available. Make Walking A Priority This Walktober Come join the Employee Walking Group on the walking trail on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. to make walking a priority for your health throughout the month of October. Additionally, the walking trail and workout stations are available for use every day. Small changes, such as taking the stairs or parking farther away from the building entrance, can help add steps to your day and benefit your health. 6 Connections September August 2017 C oming Up Daisies On August 25, our nursing, medical staff and executive team joined in the 5 West conference room to congratulate our most recent DAISY Award honoree, Terese Mandelbaum, RN. DAISY Award honorees personify Orange Regional s remarkable patient experience. Nurses who are leaders of nursing excellence by providing exceptional patient care in a progressive, dynamic and healing environment, can be nominated and winners will be recognized as outstanding role models within our nursing community. To nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award, visit Nursing Residency Graduation Celebration Orange Regional held its first 'Transition Into Practice' celebration for the Emergency Department Registered Nurse Residency program. Congratulations to the graduates, Bachelor Prepared Nurses (BSN) that successfully passed their state nursing board exams: Kristen Lowensten, Chelsea Orts, Lee-Anne Parker, Mattea Parisi and Simone Reynolds. The Emergency Department Registered Nurse Residency program gives newly licensed registered nurses the opportunity to be trained in emergency nursing. This RN residency program allows participants to shadow experienced nurses in Critical Care, Medical-Surgical and in specialty areas. Participants are then paired with experienced Orange Regional Medical Center nurse preceptors to learn the fundamentals of workflow and patient care. In addition, Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIP) provide insight about caring for Critical Care patients in a fast-paced environment
