1 October 10, 2011 CEO s MESSAGE Lou s monthly message and the September Press Ganey reports are attached. Please review and post the attachments under the CEO s Message label on your Communications Board. THE WORK IN MY SHOES EXPERIENCE Work in My Shoes is a term derived from the belief that until we try to walk in someone s shoes, we can t know or judge their experience fairly. Work in My Shoes is an innovative way to promote empathy and understanding among the MVHR Team and ultimately, see improvement in our processes as well as customer satisfaction, both internal and external. Annually, members of the Leadership Group senior managers, department heads, managers, etc. are asked to choose a department where they will shadow a front-line staff person. Suggestions made during this experience are reviewed and, whenever possible, implemented. The following is just one of many processes that has changed as a result of the Work in My Shoes experience. Keep your eyes open for more experiences that will be shared over the next few months through At The Helm. You asked How can we improve the communication regarding those patients who are out of compliance with the timing of antibiotics just prior to surgery? We listened Each quarter, as the core measures are reviewed, information regarding patients who exceed the parameters of the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), Inf-1, which is Prophylactic Antibiotic Received Within One Hour Prior to Surgical Incision, is provided to the Chief CRNA for follow up. She reviews each patient s anesthesia record and EMAR to drill down on the root cause of why the patient did not meet the core measure s requirements. The information is forwarded to the Case Mix Analyst and along with the help of the Nurse Abstractors it is then analyzed and trended. Noted trends have led to process improvements such as a recent update to the Anesthesia Record. The continued open communication between these two departments is vital to our continued improvement in our Core Measure results and ultimately will help us retain Medicare reimbursement. - J2E Leadership Development Team FLU SHOTS OFFERED Today, Employee Health begins offering flu shots to employees during specific hours. The flu shot is not mandatory, but the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania is striving for 90 percent compliance for healthcare workers. Nurse Managers will administer the flu shots to their staff members and all other department staff should report to the Employee Health Department during the hours listed below. Note: this week flu shots will only be given Monday through Thursday. There is no cost to employees. At off-campus, box-store pharmacies and clinics, we ve spotted prices ranging from $20 to $29. Needle-free flu vaccinations are available for the first time this year. The numbers of employees receiving the voluntary shots increases each year and the needle-free system may encourage even higher numbers. Hours for receiving flu shots this week are: Oct. 10: 7:30 a.m a.m. Oct. 12: 8 a.m a.m. 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. Oct. 11: 8:30 a.m a.m. Oct. 13: 8 a.m a.m. 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Beginning next Monday, Oct. 17, flu shots will be administered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you are unable to get your shot during these hours, please contact the Employee Health Department at ext.1224 to make arrangements. -- Georgina Koslosky

The program is free to all participants but registration is required by calling ext Please post the attached flier on Communication Boards. -- Donna Hatalowich CENTRAL STERILE: A VITAL ROLE IN QUALITY HEALTH CARE Central Sterile plays a vital role in the quality of care at MVH because all sterilization and decontamination take place in this area. With 13 full-time and two part-time employees, Central Sterile is also responsible for equipment rentals, daily patient charges, supply inventories, procedure trays, linens and restocking nursing units when necessary. It's important for all hospital staff to be familiar with what happens in the Central Sterile Department. You might be surprised at all the services we perform behind the scenes. Central Service Week begins on Oct. 9. Please take the time this week to drop by and let the Central Sterile staff know how important they are to MVH, our patients, and you. - Bill Filipponi WE ARE MOVING FORWARD: STROKE CERTIFICATION Monongahela Valley Hospital is working to comply with the Joint Commission and American Heart Association Stroke Care guidelines. Just as a reminder, all Acute Stroke and TIA patients will be admitted to 4-PCU, which is our designated Stroke Unit. We extend a thank you to the Emergency Department, 4-PCU, Laboratory and CT for the team effort made to help us move forward with our stroke certification. - Christine Snyder TOPIC OF DISCUSSION MVHR SERVICES During rounding, some of our leaders have found that not all MVH team members are aware of the many services we provide. From time to time in At The Helm, we will highlight these services to enable you to provide this information to our patients, families and neighbors. MVHR SERVICES: WHAT IS MMSC? Monongahela Medical Supply Company (MMSC) is a subsidiary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. The office is located in the MPOB, Suite 104. MMSC rents and sells durable medical equipment, IV therapy and oxygen services for patients at home and in extended care facilities. MMSC works closely with our staff to coordinate the delivery and set up of equipment for patients and their family members to ease the transition from inpatient to home care. MMSC is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and emergency services are available 24 hours a day. Free delivery is provided on all equipment. For more information, please contact MMSC directly at or Discussion Question: What percentage of your staff was familiar with MMSC prior to this At The Helm?

3 Vercamen, Suzi From: Sent: To: Subject: Attachments: Panza, Lou Monday, October 03, :44 AM Management Forum Press ganey september press ganey sept 2011 discharged.ppt; press ganey sept 2011 rec'd.ppt Hi Team, Attached are the reports for September. They are what they are! I don t think anyone should be happy with the trend. I also included scores based on discharge by week. That continues to show the inconsistent scores we are having. We need to redouble our efforts as we celebrate our 5 th anniversary of J2E. I should also note that other hospitals have realized that future payments will be tied to Press Ganey scores and are beginning to work on their own patient satisfaction scores. As such to stay number one we must actually improve from our previous scores. I know we can do it and so do you! Let all grab an oar and remember what we would want for our own mothers. lou Louis J Panza Jr President/CEO Monongahela Valley Hospital, Inc Country Club Rd. Monongahela PA (O) (fax) 1
