SATA CommHealth celebrated seven decades of caring for the community at the Hilton Hotel with an elegant dinner resplendent with many memorable activities. It has been looking after the needy and the disadvantaged in the community since its inception in Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Health graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour. One of the highlights of the celebration was the cake cutting led by Mr Gan Kim Yong. Over the course of the past five years (since 2013), SATA CommHealth has achieved a 7% increase in patient volume; along with slightly over 27% increase in revenue growth and increased its network of medical centres to eight centres including a community health centre. The number of notable accolades received in the past five years include President s Star Award for Social Enterprise of the Year in 2013, Charity Council Charity Governance Award in 2014 and Charity Council Charity Transparency Award in 2016 as well as In 2016, SATA CommHealth spent a total of $2.7 million on community services. This amount was spent on a broad range of services including preventive health screenings, health education and promotion, medical care, financial assistance schemes and the Doctors- On-Wheels programme. These activities facilitated about 56,000 community interactions, which was a significant increase of 91 per cent over that of In 2016, our health education programmes in schools reached out to more than 40,000 students. As part of our community outreach efforts, SATA CommHealth s Doctors-On-Wheels (DOW) visits and provides health care services to beneficiaries at 23 centres which are located at eldercare and other community facilities. Actual prices may vary. On 1st June 2017, SATA CommHealth launched a new subsidy scheme SATA CARES to help CHAS Blue cardholders defray their out-of-pocket expenses when they visit SATA CommHealth medical centres for acute or chronic medical conditions. SATA CommHealth is implementing this scheme in phases. After the six-month pilot phase, there are plans to continue this programme. The SATA Cares subsidy scheme for acute conditions will be pegged at $5 (max) and $10 (max) subsidy for CHAS Blue-Simple conditions (one chronic condition) and $60 (max) subsidy for CHAS Blue-complex conditions (two or more chronic conditions). The approved beneficiaries of this scheme are issued a SATA CommHealth Healthy Life Card, for ease of identification when they visit the medical centres. A notable fact is that the SATA Cares subsidies are on top of the regular CHAS subsidies: an $18.50 subsidy per visit for acute treatment; $80 subsidy limit for CHAS Blue (simple) and $120 limit for CHAS Blue (complex) cases (Please see the Table above on the SATA Cares Subsidy Scheme). Based on our experience, CHAS Blue-Complex cases incur high out-ofpocket expenditures. Therefore, SATA Cares offers the highest subsidies for this category. The SATA Cares scheme is available at SATA CommHealth Medical Centres. Please call our Hotline for participating medical centres and details or visit q COMMUNITY SERVICES Health Checks for Jurong Residents On Community Health Day On Sunday 26th November, Jurong residents received free glaucoma and osteoporosis assessment as well as talks on falls prevention and diabetes provided by SATA CommHealth at Jurong Medical Centre. Beginning in 2010, this was the twentieth Community Health Day organised by SATA CommHealth. It was held at SATA CommHealth Jurong Medical Centre located at Block 135, Jurong Gateway Road, # as part of SATA CommHealth s mission in promoting lifelong health and serving the community. Residents from the West queuing up to register for health checks on Community Health Day at SATA CommHealth Jurong Medical Centre. During this half-day Sunday event that started from 9am, the participants received a range of complimentary basic health screening tests and specialised tests mostly at no charge. They benefitted from a variety of tests: pre-physiotherapy assessment, osteoporosis assessment, an eye test (visual acuity and tonometry test for glaucoma) and chest X-Ray, blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol tests. Some residents were there early to queue up for the highly subsidised flu and pneumococcal vaccinations. Some of the Jurong residents, especially those above 40 years old, took the opportunity to screen their eyes for glaucoma by way of a free tonometry test. The tonometry test measures the fluid pressure in the eye, commonly known as Intraocular Pressure (IOP). This test is used to check for glaucoma, an eye disease that can cause blindness by damaging the nerves in the back of the eye. In Singapore, glaucoma affects about three percent of those aged over 50 and this risk increases with age; the Tonometry test in progress. percentage of people aged over 70 affected by glaucoma is 10 percent 1. Osteoporosis has become a main health concern in Singapore, as the rate of people over age 50 suffering from hip fractures has increased five-fold in women and oneand-a-half fold in men from the late 1960 s to the late 90 s 2. It is likely that these figures will continue to increase. A staff nurse administering flu vaccine to a participant at the event. A study done in Singapore found that about one-quarter of patients who sustained osteoporotic hip fractures died within one year 3. By 2030, the number of seniors over 65 years of age will more than double, from 430,000 today to over 900,000. At that time, one in five Singaporeans will be in that age range, an increase from one in nine at present 4. q Sources: 1 Singapore National Eye Centre 2 Hip Fracture Incidence Rates in Singaporeans Koh LKH et al, Osteoporosis International, 2001; 12: Wong et al, Osteoporotic hip fractures in Singapore Costs and Patient s Outcome, Ann Acad Med Singapore 2002; 31:3-7 4 Ministry of Health
