1 A Quarterly Newsletter For Enriching Your Health MIC (P) 022/10/2016 October 2016 Residents Welcome Community Health Day in Eastern Singapore Residents from Chai Chee and nearby estates queuing up for registration. Many residents of Kembangan - Chai Chee congregated at SATA CommHealth Uttamram Medical Centre on the morning of 21 August. Many were there to receive free health checks (chest X-Ray, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol tests) offered by SATA CommHealth. As a community healthcare provider and social enterprise, the complimentary basic and specialised health tests offered to Kembangan - Chai Chee and Bedok residents on that day was in line with its mission of promoting lifelong health and serving the community. In addition to the regular health checks, a specialised test which benefits the community was also done tonometry or the test for glaucoma. At this Community Health Day, the residents could also sign up for either a pre-physiotherapy assessment or a subsidised mammography test. (Cont d from cover page) Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour. He was given a live demonstration of the Telehealth project. The project received a grant from the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). This pilot study was a first for SATA CommHealth. It will remotely monitor the health status of 60 elderly individuals with the two common chronic medical conditions - diabetes mellitus and hypertension via Bluetooth enabled devices remotely located in the resident s home over a period of six months. In addition to blood pressure and blood glucose, other parameters like BMI, pulse rate and oxygen saturation in the blood (SpO2) are monitored by a SATA CommHealth central monitoring station. The objective of this study is to complement chronic disease management with the innovative use of telehealth technology. Additionally, this study will assess the benefits and effectiveness of Telehealth in the community setting to care for people with chronic diseases. 3 3 HealthLine October 2016 COMMUNITY SERVICES SATA CommHealth Hosts Inaugural Girls Brigade Smoke-Free Ambassador Training As part of SATA CommHealth s anti-smoking advocacy, a new smoke-free course was introduced in 2016 to secondary school girls who are part of the Girls Brigade. We felt that there is no better time to start educating our youth about smoking than while they are in secondary schools. Singapore s smoking rate has steadily declined, from 18.3% in 1992 to 13.3% in Although deemed low by world standards, Singapore aims to reduce its smoking prevalence rate even further to 12% by On the day of the course, the majority of girls hailing from the same secondary school streamed into SATA CommHealth s auditorium, all abuzz with anticipation on the new course. Although they were from different levels within the same school, they shared a common interest; the desire to stay smoke-free was the main motivating factor in enrolling for this course. This course teaches the Girls Brigade members across all ranks how to handle peer pressure to stay smoke-free by using tried-and-tested techniques. During the course, the instructor also made use of educational and interesting games to reinforce the central message that smoking can cause health problems for females, while it can also affect one s appearance. All in all, they completed the day long course feeling empowered and informed of their choices to stay smokefree. q Girls Brigade Friendship Day Carnival In line with the theme Living with Understanding and Compassion, the Girl s Brigade (GB) Friendship Day was held at Toa Payoh Central to bring the GB into the heartlands. The Guest-of-Honour was Mrs Mary Tan, Singapore s First Lady and Patron of The Girls Brigade Singapore. This initiative aims to aid the girls in Befriending and Members of the Girls Brigade interacting with the elderly at the event. Serving the Community through their interaction with the lonely, elderly, needy and those with special needs. SATA CommHealth, together with several other voluntary welfare organisations, supported GB Singapore at the event. Our Community Services team had a health education booth which incorporated a healthy lifestyle and smoking prevention exhibition. This event also helped to create awareness for SATA CommHealth s primary healthcare services to the community by providing healthcare related information to the visitors. An estimated 1,000 beneficiaries from various community partners participated in this carnival. Initiatives such as Share Your Lunch Money are a legacy of the GB Friendship Day, where GB girls and leaders learn to donate a portion of their lunch money to provide meals for the elderly and needy on a sustainable basis. This is in line with the Ministry of Education s emphasis on Values In Action, which SATA CommHealth also endorses. q

4 4 HealthLine October 2016 MOBILE MEDICAL SERVICES SATA CommHealth Highlights Importance of Healthy Living at Pledge Your Heart Walk Participants of the walk undergoing health screening assisted by SATA CommHealth staff. T he outdoor foyer portion of Marina Bay Sands was a hive of activity on a bright sunny Saturday morning on 25th June. Many participants of all ages and walks of life congregated there for the Pledge Your Heart Walk co-organized by Nestle and Singapore Heart Foundation. They came dressed in sports attire and were all raring to go. Coupled with the fresh morning air, booths were buzzing with activity as many participants came earlier to sample what the booths lined up alongside the promenade had to offer. SATA CommHealth actively engaged the participants through our free basic health screening offered to all who visited our booth. We were also on hand to advise many of the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through the monitoring of one s health status through regular checks. Participants were able to consult our staff on health screening facts and received answers to their enquiries on heart health. Many of the participants benefitted immensely from the helpful advice as well as to exercise for a healthy heart! q

5 5 HealthLine October 2016 CORPORATE SERVICES SATA CommHealth Partners Nestle Singapore to Promote Healthy Lifestyles for Organisations SATA CommHealth and Nestle set out to educate and create awareness among staff of corporate companies on the importance of healthy lifestyles. The health screening campaign that ran from March to July 2016 featured the familiar SATA CommHealth bus decked out in joint Nestle Omega Plus Acticol milk livery paying a visit to many companies. This bus was a familiar sight at many company sites where staff of all ages received a free health screening. The campaign objectives were: To promote a healthier workplace in Singapore across industries Raise awareness of high cholesterol impact on heart health Encourage corporate workforce to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle Employees of Singapore Swimming Club undergoing health screening assisted by SATA CommHealth staff. A SATA CommHealth staff explaining the Healthier Workplace Pledge to employees of Singapore Swimming Club. The target of the campaign was to reach as many as 10,000 employees or a minimum of 30 to 50 companies. Coupled with this, the SATA CommHealth bus featured many education snippets in the bus and lists recommendations for a healthier lifestyle through appropriate diet and exercise. During the screening, participants were screened on their height, weight, body mass index as well as their cholesterol readings. They were offered a taste test as well as a decision to take up the Healthier Workplace Pledge from Nestle by signing up on the Cholesterol Pledge card. When they took up the pledge, they received a card showing the risks associated with high cholesterol as well their cholesterol reading and how it translates into their risk of cardiovascular disease/stroke. In stage two of the campaign, numerous awards will be given to the companies with the most number of healthy staff. q SATA CommHealth Nestle CareMobile stationed at various corporate organisations to provide on-site screening services to their staff.

Dr Tan Tiong Har, our resident respiratory physician was featured on 938Live s Body & Soul programme that aired on 2 August 2016 at 7:30pm. The topic was Risks of Tuberculosis (TB) Infection aimed at sending a community education message that the public should not take the threat of TB lightly. If the person is diagnosed with TB, going for the recommended Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) treatment is mandatory and prevents the spread of Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR-TB) or worse still the Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR-TB) tuberculosis. More importantly, those on DOT must comply with their daily doses of medication and complete the course of antibiotics. Dr Tan addressed the basics of TB infection and how TB is usually contracted; how it infects the lungs of the patient and what precautions can be taken to stem the spread. He also explained the procedures behind the DOT treatment and what it entails. Dr Tan fielded questions from the host, Daniel Martin as well as a few other callers who were very concerned over the potential risks of exposure to this disease that is well controlled but not totally eradicated in Singapore. q QUALITY SERVICE Launch of Service Ambassador Initiative This initiative is to encompass a holistic approach to service excellence with the Service Ambassador (SA) contributing to the overall organisational goal of service excellence. The objectives are to inculcate a service excellence mindset in all SATA CommHealth staff by exemplifying, encouraging and recognising service excellence behaviours and ideas. This will also engender and maintain a service excellence culture in all SATA CommHealth establishments. As part of the initial push to implement this initiative started since June 2016, three SAs comprising a Nurse, a Radiographer and a Customer Service Officer/Clinic Assistant will be appointed in every centre. The role of the SAs is to ensure that timely action is carried out for all patient s needs and enquiries. They are tasked to concentrate on the peak hours between 9:00am - 11:00am and 2:00pm - 3:30pm.
