2 MENTAL HEALTH CARE BOOST BETTER CARE: Tracey Theobald, Deb Jeffery, Dr Aruni Hapangama and Joyce Goh are part of the team at Maroondah Hospital s Psychiatric Assessment and Planning Unit, or PAPU. Mental health support in Melbourne s east has received a boost, with the opening of a Psychiatric Assessment and Planning Unit (PAPU) at Maroondah Hospital. PAPU is a model for delivering short-term psychiatric care. The unit operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a client length of stay up to 72 hours. Located next to the Maroondah Hospital Emergency Department, the unit will complement the many mental health services already provided at Maroondah Hospital. Eastern Health Executive Clinical Director of Mental Health, Associate Professor Paul Katz, said the new unit would mean patients who required emergency mental health care could receive the specialised treatment they needed. This new unit is another example of Eastern Health s continued commitment to provide quality mental health care in the region, A/Prof Katz said. This new unit is another example of Eastern Health s continued commitment to provide quality mental health care in the region. Associate Professor Paul Katz We are grateful to the current Victorian Labor Government and previous state Liberal government for their strong support of this project. 02 EASTERN HEALTH QUARTERLY

I ve helped people with a range of concerns, most commonly anxiety, depression, grief and dealing with separation, he said. If you or someone you know could benefit from a session with one of our counsellors, please call to make an appointment. As well as counselling, Yarra Valley Health offers a number of other services including nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, women and children s services, occupational therapy and district nursing. 4 OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS APPLAUDED Eastern Health has celebrated the extraordinary contribution of our staff and volunteers at the annual A2i (Aspire to Inspire) Awards. About 400 people attended the red carpet event, which also recognised long-standing staff members who marked 25, 30 and 35 years of service. 6 ARTISTIC LICENCE EXPLAINS SURGICAL EXPERIENCE ANIMATED ASSISTANCE: Patient Services Assistant Taehoon Gwag shows his cartoons explaining the surgical experience to Nurse Unit Manager Lay Hoon Tan. A Box Hill Hospital staff member s hobby has drawn praise for providing an insight into the surgical experience for patients. Patient Services Assistant Taehoon Gwag is the cartoonist behind a series of drawings on display in Box Hill Hospital s surgical admissions ward. The drawings show the surgical process in a clear and easy to understand way for people from all backgrounds. Surgery can be a daunting thought for many people, Taehoon said. As drawing has always been a passion of mine, I illustrated the surgical process with cartoons to make it easier for people to understand, particularly children or patients whose primary language is not English. The cartoons were created following encouragement from Nurse Unit Manager Lay Hoon Tan who saw Taehoon drawing during his break. I was very impressed by Taehoon s drawing, Lay Hoon said. I then thought Taehoon could use his talents to explain what is involved during a patient s surgical journey. Lay Hoon took Taehoon on a tour of the ward to ensure his drawings would be accurate and to improve his knowledge of the process. While information brochures and talking to medical staff were important, Lay Hoon said the cartoons could be easily understood and reduced a patient s anxiety. Taehoon should be extremely proud of his work. 06 EASTERN HEALTH QUARTERLY
7 Following an extensive national and international search, Eastern Health has appointed Adjunct Professor David Plunkett, pictured, to the role of Chief Executive. Eastern Health Board Chair Dr Joanna Flynn AM said Adj Prof Plunkett was highly regarded and experienced, including 15 years at Eastern Health. The Board is looking to David to lead and foster the next phase of development of this great health service, which we are all so proud to be part of, Dr Flynn said. FAMILY VIOLENCE SUPPORT A PRIORITY Domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty spent a day at Eastern Health, helping the organisation shape its response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence, as part of the Strengthening Hospital Responses for Family Violence initiative. As well as working with Eastern Health s Staff Wellbeing Leadership Group and Family Violence Reference Group on how Eastern Health can improve its response to family violence, Rosie also shared her story with 300 staff, volunteers and their families during a special presentation at Box Hill Hospital. Chief Executive David Plunkett said health services had a crucial role to play in preventing, identifying and responding to people experiencing family violence. 8 COOLHEADS PREVAIL FOR HEALTHCARE Eastern Health is proud to partner with Bendigo Community Bank branches in Melbourne s east to support people undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. The Coolheads campaign aims to raise $145,000 to introduce a scalp cooling service at Maroondah Hospital. Scalp cooling technology helps prevent hair loss in patients receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. Further research is being undertaken to determine whether the technology could be utilised for other cancers. GENEROUS EFFORT: Libby Crosby has donated $5000 to the Coolheads campaign. The Coolheads campaign is being run by Ringwood East & Heathmont Community Bank branches, Bendigo Bank. Among those supporting the fundraising effort is Libby Crosby, pictured, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago. Having lost her hair after receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the campaign resonates with her. Libby has generously donated $5000, which is the remainder of the money left in her trust fund that she did not require for her treatment. Eastern Health Foundation Development Manager, Major Gifts Carolyn Schuwalow thanked all participating Bendigo Community Bank branches, including Ringwood East and Heathmont, for their generous support of the Maroondah Hospital oncology department. For more information, visit: EASTERN HEALTH FOUNDATION Eastern Health Foundation is the fundraising arm of Eastern Health. The Foundation raises additional funds that enable Eastern Health to better understand our patients and their health needs, and to improve and advance their care and treatment.
