The hospital s Patient Experience Group (PEG) has overseen the project and identified additional initiatives where possible, such as dementia care training and Montcalm beds. The provision of this money has enabled the hospital to bring to fruition both small and larger projects, all of which have contributed to improving both the patient and carer / visitor experience over the last year supporting the implementation of the Patient Experience Strategy. 4

5 The difference the money made Comments from staff Registration: Cupboard space created to store deceased patients belongings The Registration team is committed to providing an efficient and supportive service to the relatives of deceased patients. With the additional storage areas now available to us we are looking forward to easing the burden, often felt by relatives, of collecting the deceased s property from the ward. The property will be collected from the wards by a team of volunteers and stored in our new facilities until the relatives attend to collect the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. Beverley Rudland Registration Officer Outpatients, Diagnostic Imaging and Endoscopy The Central Outpatients Department has been much enhanced by the provision of Marlux curtains in the clinic rooms. It has meant that infection control issues have been addressed, and there is a continuity of care in this respect, in line with ward areas. We also have new weighing scales and seating to support bariatric patients. This has given us the ability to provide dignity for patients within the clinical areas. A screen was also purchased which has already been put to good use to provide privacy and dignity when the need arises. 6 The difference the money made Comments from staff Chaplaincy We are very grateful for a grant of 1500 towards the provision of a multifaith garden in the hospital grounds. We have purchased three wooden benches, 100 stepping-stones to provide a labyrinth, two sets of wind chimes, a water feature, ornamental stones and a lamp. We have been working very closely with the head gardener at the hospital, Peter Chapman, who has given advice and support and who supplied us with a very acceptable plan for the labyrinth. We hope to build an arbour with a roof so that the garden can be used in inclement weather. We will be contributing some money for plants etc from our Chaplaincy charitable funds. On 20 November we held a Celebration of Faiths in Healthcare event as part of Inter Faith Week and dedicated and opened the garden on this day as well. This project has the full support of the Respecting Diversity User Group and the Equality and Diversity Group as well as the Chaplaincy multifaith volunteers. 7 The difference the money made Comments from staff Radiotherapy Department The money awarded to the Radiotherapy Department proved invaluable in meeting a number of patients privacy and dignity needs. The fund has allowed us to purchase 300 breast gowns for patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment and ensures that every patient will be able to use a gown at each visit. We purchased movable screens to provide privacy for patients undressing and dressing in the treatment rooms. These have also been utilised throughout the department when particular patient needs have arisen. Money was also spent on refurbishing two clinic rooms to provide a more aesthetic environment for patient consultations and enable provision of complementary therapies. 8 The difference the money made Comments from staff Mortuary: Refurbishment of relatives waiting area and viewing room The refurbished areas do much to update the environment, improving the visitor experience and creating a calm, professional atmosphere in a non-clinical way. 9 The difference the money made Comments from staff Dementia Care and Training The hospital is looking at ways to improve the care it provides for patients with dementia and identified an approach to dementia care SPECAL, wrap-around care which is a very gentle and patient-centred approach to supporting and respecting those with dementia and the dignity monies funded a member of staff to attend their initial training day. In addition, the hospital has learnt from Colchester Hospital (as part of the East of England QIPP [Quality, Innovation, Prevention, Productivity] awards) about a simple and effective method being used on acute wards to calm patients with dementia and encourage take up of food, drinks and medication. This approach involves a red table being placed on a ward with sweets and water / tea available which patients are drawn to. On the table there are also items that hold meaning for the patients (identified on admission), which enable them to feel more at home and therefore less agitated. The dignity monies will support this project which will commence in the new year (2010). Julie Sadler Head of Patient Experience and Adult Safeguarding Montcalm Spirit Beds The four new beds will provide another resource that will help us to reduce the number of patients falling out of high beds, as the beds can be positioned very low at the same time improving the dignity of those patients. The electronic multipositioning capabilities of these beds will also reduce the risk of moving and handling injuries to the staff who are caring for these patients. These beds were introduced into the hospital on National Falls Awareness Day which helped focus and raise awareness to staff, visitors and patients and showed our commitment to reduce the risk of inpatient falls. It has allowed parents to have a few quiet moments with their thoughts and an area which is quiet and peaceful for young people to discuss their worries and concerns. 10 The difference the money made Comments from staff Brantham Assessment Unit day room We are very fortunate to have recently been able to redecorate and refurnish the day room facility that is shared between Brantham Assessment Unit and Capel short stay ward. The assessment unit sees around 60 emergency patients every day and it is so important for patients, relatives and carers to have an area where they can sit and collect their thoughts away from the busy ward activity but close enough to be at hand if needed. The room was in a very poor state of decoration with a rather sad mismatch of chairs. We now have a welcoming quiet area fit for its purpose. We have also been able to provide a leaflet rack with a comprehensive range of patient information leaflets. The feedback from visitors has been excellent and the room is very well used.
