School of Oncology The Christie International School of Oncology Specialist Oncology Education and Training
Welcome Welcome to The Christie International School of Oncology, which is attached to the world renowned The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The Christie School of Oncology is in the unique position of having many years of experience of delivering education to organisations in the UK and overseas. This enables us to work alongside clients to develop programmes which can support improvements in cancer care, treatment and research. This booklet has been developed to provide key information to international clients on how The Christie School of Oncology can support improvements in cancer care and service delivery in your organisation through our extensive education and training programme. If you would like to discuss how The School can support your education requirements, then please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you. Professor Richard Cowan Dr Catherine Heaven
About The Christie NHS Foundation Trust The Christie is a UK based comprehensive cancer centre. Founded in Manchester in 1887, The Christie leads the world in developing cancer treatments, producing the very first international guidelines for radiation treatment. In the late 1930s Christie clinicians pioneered biological dosimetry in children, and for over 100 years led the world in developing new treatments for breast cancer. The Christie s work led to the development of bone marrow transplantation, and was the first centre in the world to use image guided radiotherapy. The Christie continues to build on its world firsts, pioneering peritoneal tumour surgery, making advances in robotic surgical techniques, and delivering a world renowned immunotherapy programme for renal cancers and melanoma. It is now the UK s largest brachytherapy and molecular radiotherapy centre, is home to the country s largest experimental cancer medicine group and, in 2018, will be the first centre in the UK to provide proton therapy.
World leading research The Christie is one of the world s leading experimental cancer medicine centres, and an international leader in research and development. The research portfolio includes a range of drug trials across all phases. This groundbreaking research is made possible through the support of a range of partnerships, and specialist research facilities. The Christie has one of the largest trials portfolios in the UK with over 600 active clinical trials. The Christie works closely with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK to take research from the laboratory to clinical trials with patients. This research has been officially ranked best in the UK. Complementing the drug trials, the newly formed Christie Patient Centred Research (CPCR) group conducts research to improve the experience and outcomes of those affected by cancer including friends and family. Led by a joint Chair in Nursing, with The University of Manchester, the CPCR group aims to develop international collaborations to conduct patient-centred cancer research that includes the personal, social and psychological factors related to illness and experiences of health care.
The Christie School of Oncology The Christie School of Oncology was established as part of the Trust s commitment to facilitate global access to the specialist expertise at The Christie. The School offers a knowledgeable and professional, high quality education service, with a dedicated, creative and innovative team. The School has access to a complete range of professionals, with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and deliver world class cancer services. These include medical, nursing, radiography and radiotherapy staff, medical physics and biological scientists, specialist pharmacists, physio and occupational therapists, as well as the complete range of service and performance managers essential to commission, develop and deliver effective and efficient services. Educational and development opportunities include: educational observerships and visits to The Christie comprehensive cancer centre; educational courses, workshops, seminar programmes and study days delivered at our Manchester site, through our on- line virtual learning environment, or through a travelling faculty; access to a range of academic cancer education programmes with our partner universities, including, The University of Manchester; advice and consultancy on designing, commissioning, and developing education and training. Priding itself on being evidence based, multi-professional and patient centric, The School delivers a programme of education events which meets the needs of health professionals at every stage of their career. The School is unique in that it offers education to all members of the healthcare team, throughout their career: from undergraduate education through to specialist training. The School takes an a long term adabptable approach to working with organisations and aims to build relationships to develop sustainable programmes of education.
Education observerships and visits I was thrilled to be able to get such a broad spectrum of departments and specialities throughout the weeek The School has developed a specialist observership and placement service, to enable educational visits from health care professionals from across the world. A bespoke personal visit plan is developed for each individual, maximising the opportunity of spending time within our high profile, research driven environment and ensuring personal and organisational objectives are met. We also support travel plans, and offer an introductory service for those visiting the UK for the first time. We have hosted visitors from across the world, e.g. Europe, Egypt, Uganda, Chile and Hong Kong. Examples of observerships include, specialist colorectal and pelvic surgery, management of lung cancer, radiotherapy planning and delivery, management of specialist services, nurse led chemotherapy services and developments in endocrinology.
Courses, workshops, seminars and study days The School has a portfolio of academic and specialist training programmes which has been developed to meets the needs of today s healthcare professionals. Courses vary from specialist surgical programmes and proton beam therapy courses to comprehensive academic revision programmes for Fellowship exams for the UK Royal Colleges. Programmes have been designed to meet the needs of health care professionals at different levels of development and practice This portfolio also includes the delivery of an annual programme of conferences and study days, which attracts delegates from across the world. The programme of events aims to meet the professional development needs of specialist healthcare professionals, and attracts speakers from across the world. Details of the events programme can be found at study-days-and- conferences/
Maguire Communication Skills Training Unit The course was excellent and extremely helpful. It has equipped me with skills and tools which will be empowering in my clinical practice The Christie School of Oncology benefits from hosting the internationally renowned Maguire Communication Skills Unit, with its long history of research, development and delivery in the area of clinical communications skills for consultant and senior level health care professionals. The Unit has unrivalled expertise, and contributes to the development and delivery of training in communication skills locally, nationally and internationally and obtains the highest quality reviews for its training.
Bespoke education and consultancy In addition to its established programme of education, The Christie School of Oncology offers bespoke education, developing short and longer courses for groups of visiting professionals, or developing specific programmes to meet the needs of a particular organisation. Examples include conferences, and weeklong courses for a range of pharmaceutical and technical companies. Bespoke courses are developed for organisations with sustainability in mind. The Christie School of Oncology has an extensive record of success in developing education and training packages in collaboration with a wide variety of international healthcare providers. The School offers a development service, to scope potential requirements and needs and to put together a faculty of key experts able to deliver training outside the UK.
Using the latest technologies The Christie School of Oncology recognises that education should be accessible and available; it should give professionals the knowledge they need when they need it, in a form they can easily access. The School has therefore developed a virtual learning platform, ChristieEducationLive! which allows individuals to join conferences and educational events from their workplace. All Christie study days and large meetings can be attended virtually from anywhere in the world. Our state of the art virtual learning platform is also able to deliver 24 hour access to high quality educational resources, knowledge and learning. The content is accessible directly through the desktop or on the move using a range of mobile devices. This makes our programmes uniquely accessible to any healthcare professional across the globe at any time of day or night. Access to a range of academic cancer education programmes The School partners with a number of prestigious, world shaping universities in the development of academic programmes. These partnerships of clinical and academic heritage, with our real world experience, makes the School the first choice for professionals seeking higher education qualification Our academic programmes include a range of higher degrees for nurses, allied health professionals, scientists and doctors/medics. Our programmes are developed, and reviewed, with a clear understanding of the service requirements, career demands and aspirations of health care professionals across the world.
