1 The Furniture Makers Company the furnishing industry s charity SUPPORTER FUNDRAISING TOOLKIT

2 Thank you for choosing to support The Furniture Makers Company by holding an event in aid of our charity This toolkit has information and ideas to help you make your fundraising event a success Should you have any further queries or need any additional fundraising resources (collecting boxes, posters, banners etc) then please do not hesitate to contact us at Remember, it doesn t matter how much you raise as every contribution, however large or small, helps us look after our colleagues and their dependants, in their time of need Thank you! Our charity was set up over 100 years ago to help people from the furnishing industry at times of difficulty or hardship. Today we also encourage new talent with our extensive education programme to support school children, students and young professionals, and we champion excellence in our industry with our prestigious Guild Mark awards.

3 How the funds you raise help real people Greg graduated from Newcastle in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. After graduation he decided to pursue a career in furniture making, attracted by the opportunity to create functioning products that can make a difference to people s everyday lives. In order to do this Greg needed financial support. He was highly recommended by his professors and The Furniture Makers Company was happy to fund a scholarship for him to study for an MA in Furniture Design at Bucks New University. Greg recently graduated with distinction. Being awarded the scholarship gave me the financial support to study for a Master s. I am very grateful to the Company and University for their support and belief in me. Judith previously worked in the carpeting industry. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in Since then she has undergone surgery followed by a course of radiotherapy, and is taking a course of very strong medication for the next five years. In addition Judith has also been diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) for which she is receiving treatment, and she is an insulin dependent diabetic. Struggling with the stress of all of her health issues, Judith asked us to help fund a respite holiday to convalesce and we provided her and her husband with a grant of 400 to relax at the seaside. Jessie, a cabinet maker, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and her condition is terminal. Jessie and her husband are keen to spend as much time as possible with their two young sons and were fortunate to be given a second-hand camper van to use for holidays. This was a fantastic gift but the van has limited space for the family, so they applied to the Company for the cost of having an awning fitted to the van to create much needed extra space. We were able to help the family and the awning was delivered just before Easter. We ve just had our amazing awning fitted! It looks incredible and has totally transformed our camper van. We are taking the children on a family holiday next week.

Book early leaving it too late might mean you miss out D o your sums keep a record of all your income and expenses. Don t forget to ask for goods and services to be donated or discounted to help boost your fundraising target. If you don t ask you don t get! S et a realistic goal for your fundraising and ensure you only spend a third of what you plan to raise G o online set up a personalised fundraising page in minutes through Just Giving I f you are hosting a challenge event the easiest way to raise funds is online. 6 The legal bit We are very grateful to you for fundraising for our charity. Your safety and wellbeing is our priority. With this in mind, please follow our fundraising guidelines and ensure you adhere to all laws and health and safety guidelines when organising and holding your event Please consider the following guidelines as you plan for your event: Ensure that your event is organised efficiently and safely The Health and Safety Executive has further information on event safety ( If selling food, contact the Environmental Health department at your local council for advice. Ensure that your event is properly and adequately supervised. Where children are involved, this should include providing proper adult supervision carry out appropriate background checks if adults are to have unsupervised access to children. Consider what insurance cover you need for your event; you may need Public Liability Insurance Check with your local council whether you need any special licences, for example a public entertainment licence or a licence to sell alcohol Always keep any money safe and secure and have two people present to count any cash raised Make sure adequate First Aid cover is available for larger events. Recommended providers include St John Ambulance, the British Red Cross and the National Association of Private Ambulance Services. Check with your venue if you are unsure. Raffles/lotteries There are a number of legal requirements to running a raffle or lottery. For small raffles that are part of a bigger event, you don t need a licence as long as tickets are only sold at the event and the prizes are drawn at the event. The same applies to private raffles where tickets are only available to members of a club for example, but in both cases cash prizes are not allowed. For larger raffles and lotteries where tickets are on sale to the general public, you need a Licence Permit from the Local Registration Authority at your local council. Please visit gov.uk for more information. Public/street collections All street collections or collections on public property will need to be registered with the local authority who will issue a collection licence. Under 16s (or 18 in London) are not permitted to collect money through public collections. Collections on private land, including businesses and supermarkets, are permissible with the agreement of the premises owner. Liability The Furniture Makers Company cannot accept any responsibility for your event, nor for anyone who participates in it. Consider what insurance you may require to cover your liability. Gift Aid The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by individuals who pay UK tax. Gift Aid donations are regarded as having basic rate tax deducted by the donor. It cannot be applied to the sale of any goods or service. You can find more information regarding Gift Aid on Sending in your donation All funds collected should be sent to The Furniture Makers Company as soon as possible after the event and no longer than within four weeks of collection. You can make payment either via our website, by cheque, cash or directly into our bank account. Please contact us for further details.
