2 Purpose of the role : The registered nurse position focuses on the improvement of Maori Health outcomes and the reduction of Maori health inequalities. This role focuses on increasing Maori engagement through a whanau ora model of care with a view to improving outcomes and reducing nonattendance. Domain One Professional responsibility Includes accountabilities for professional, legal, ethical and culturally safe practice. This includes being able to demonstrate advanced critical thinking, judgement and accountability for own actions and decisions Practices nursing to demonstrate professional responsibility Meets the domains of competent practice as outlined by Nursing Council of New Zealand. Includes demonstrated ability to apply the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice Role models professional practice to a high standard to support nurses practice with competent professional standards of the professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements. Supports preceptors to direct, monitor and evaluate new nurses Works as a highly proficient /expert registered nurse at Level 3/4, across to assist nurses assess patient needs, plan care and evaluate effectiveness. Assists with clinical care delivery, as nurses undertake interventions in a safe manner Supports nurses to ensure that there is a safe environment to enable client safety, independence, quality of life and health is achieved. Coaches new nurses about health and safety, infection control and quality and risk management. Personal and professional development Is highly clinically proficient and respected for ability to support the team with clinically difficult situations Seeks regular professional supervision to discuss how to address areas of difficulty and review quality of practice. Seeks advice from nurse leader in a timely manner regarding professional issues Pursues a program of self-development to broaden critical thinking and leadership skills. 3 Domain Two Management of nursing care Includes accountability related to patient/client assessment and management of advanced nursing care that is supported by evidence Provides respiratory nursing knowledge and skills in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care provided to people with chronic respiratory conditions Assists with case management across the hospital/community interface for Maori and other patients who would benefit from support in improving self-management and coordinated care. Engaging with patients and their whanau as inpatients and follow up community patients to follow up on any patients that need to come back for outpatient visits, reinforcing the importance of attending and linking with the whanau to support their relative to make the life style choices for health living and improving health literacy. Working alongside the CNS and supporting them in their roles. Works closely with GPs and other community and hospital healthcare providers. Provides advanced respiratory nursing care primarily for Maori and other patients to achieve improved access, health outcomes, and independent management. Shows understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi (partnership, protection, participation) and importance of Te Whare Tapa Wha (the four cornerstones of health) te taha wairua (spiritual aspects), te taha hinegaro (mental and emotional aspects), te taha whanau (family and community aspects) and te taha tinana (physical aspects) Recognise culturally appropriate and safe practice in the nursing workforce and assist in initiatives developed to reduce inequalities and positively impact on Maori and non-maori health status Assists in the leadership and management of projects to improve Maori access to healthcare services. Follow up with patients and their whanau where there is disengagement with the service Model excellent consumer service with Maori communities Education and Teaching Primary resource for evidence based information for patients, their family, carers and health care professionals Contributes to nursing study days to ensure that nurses are enabled to provide appropriate clinical and cultural care Role models and maintains own clinical expertise in specialty area. 6 PERSON SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse [Respiratory] Qualification Registered Nurse in New Zealand - RCpN, RGON, or BHSc Nursing. Current Annual Practicing Certificate Ongoing commitment to continuing education.
