1 WORLD METEOROLOGICAL ORGANIZATION International Workshop on High Impact Weather Research (Ningbo, China from 20 to 23 January 2015) Information for Participants The International Workshop on High Impact Weather Research is co-organized by WMO and CMA and hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather (LaSW)/CMA. 1. Date and Venue of the Workshop The event will be held in Ningbo, China from 20 to 23 January The venue of the workshop is Nicedream Resort Hotel, No.777 Anshi Road, Dongqian Lake Tourist & Holiday Resort, Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China. 2. Working Language The working language of the workshop is English. 3. Entry visa requirements Visitors to China must have a passport valid for at least 6 months and confirmed round-trip tickets. Any participant from countries with no diplomatic relations or no special visa exemption arrangement with China should obtain an entry visa before entering the country. When uncertain as to entry visa requirements for China, please contact your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate as soon as possible. Submission of extended abstract The workshop will include keynote lectures, contributed papers and poster papers. The workshop will shed light on the following five areas related to high impact weather systems. (a) Observations and field programs, (b) Tropical cyclones (c) Heavy rainfall, mesoscale convection, lightning and thunderstorm, (d) Impact of Tibetan Plateau on weathers, (e) Forecasting techniques 1

2 Authors are invited to submit high quality extended abstracts on one of the five areas listed above. We recommend a single column format, single spaced 12-pt Arial font and A4 paper. An 8-page extended abstract is required for keynote lectures. Each of abstracts could include color or black-white figures, tables as well as bibliographies. Please mark one of the areas which you select from above with bold letters in the left top corner at the first page of your abstract. The extended abstracts are expected to be submitted via lasw@cams.cma.gov.cn. Abstracts submission deadline is December 25th, Registration On-site registration will be arranged at the lobby of the Nicedream Resort Hotel on 19th Jan. (Monday): 1:00pm to 8:00pm Participants should pay the registration fee by cash or credit card on-site. The registration fee for those who have received the WMO financial support will be waived. The registration fee is CNY 1000, which covers workshop preprint materials, meals, receptions, local transportations and other fees. A receipt will be provided by meeting secretariat. 6. Hotel Arrangement The Local Secretariat has reserved a block of rooms for participants at the Nicedream Resort hotel at special negotiated rates. Accommodation will be arranged by Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and online registration is available at the workshop website. It is suggested that all participants stay at the Nicedream Resort Hotel and three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be provided for each day during the period of the workshop. Participants are requested to bring with them their meal coupons to the hotel dining room. The Nicedream Resort hotel accepts the following foreign credit cards: Visa, American Express, Diner s Club, MasterCard, Amex and Unionpay. Internet access and wifi in the hotel rooms are available and is free of charge. For details about the hotel, please access website: 7. Currency The currency in Ningbo is the Chinese Yuan (CNY). Foreign currency and traveler s checks are exchanged into Chinese Yuan at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchange service providers. 3 Credit cards (Visa, American Express, Diner s Club, MasterCard and JCB) are accepted at hotels, department stores, and most shops and restaurants. If your credit card does not have a photo please be sure to carry with you a photo ID. Banking Hours: weekdays 09:00 am 05:00 pm All banks are closed on weekends 8. Transport It will take about 30mins from Airport to Hotel. LOC will arrange the transportation by providing a special Limousine to pick you up from Ningbo Leshe International airport. After you exit the customs area look for the welcome board with the sign International Workshop on High Impact Weather Research. Thus, please do not forget to send your flight information to the LOC ( laws@cams.cma.gov.cn) as soon as possible so we know what date and time you are arriving. If you miss the Limousine, LOC suggests that you to take a taxi from the airport to hotel. Taxi cost is about 70 CNY. Climate and Weather The average climate of Ningbo in January is as follows: Mean daily maximum temperature: 15ºC Daily mean temperature: 5ºC Average monthly rainfall: 73mm Average humidity: 67% 10. Health requirements/medical care Up to date information on international travel and health is provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) at the following website: For emergency health problems/issues please contact the LOC as soon as possible. Medical services are of a high standard and most international prescription drugs are readily available through retail pharmacies. It is suggested that you bring personal medical insurance for the duration of the trip. 11. Time Zone Local time = UTC/GMT + 8 hours Other Information Internet facilities Provision has been made in the meeting room for wireless Internet connection. Electricity The standard voltage in China is 220 volts, 50 Hz. Below are the shape of the plugs which are usually used. If your appliances plug has a different shape, you may need a plug adapter. Mobile Phone Connection Mobile phones with GSM configuration will not function unless your mobile service 4

5 provider has a roaming agreement with China that will enable you to use your own SIM card and hence keep your own mobile number.
