It s hard to believe it s already summer. I hope you are enjoying the hot weather and are making the most of this incredible sunshine. It s a welcome sight after the hard winter we had. Speaking of the hard winter.. you may have noticed the potholes and road deterioration that was caused by the winter weather. We refer to those areas as frost boils. We know they are bothersome and want you to know that they will be fixed soon. State funds became available this spring to apply for, so we are just finishing the public process of getting a contractor onboard to do the work. As you may know, we are required by law to annually send the Consumer Confidence Report which relates to the quality of the city water system. I also like to use this opportunity to provide you (our residents) with basic information, as well as updates about other events and happenings in Zillah. Zillah is amazing! I believe a healthy community consists of a variety of individuals with many different points of view and ideas. I can honestly say, without bias, (well maybe a little bit) that Zillah is one of the healthiest communities in the state and for sure THE healthiest in the valley. J U N E Our city management team, City Council, Administration and Staff, work hand in hand with business owners, developers, civic clubs and numerous volunteers to foster respect and unity for all. By communicating and working with each other, we have accomplished many worthwhile projects like the new Zillah Skate Park, the Teapot Memorial Park, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the soon to be Veterans Memorial. Study Session begins at 6:00 p.m. and the Council meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. The public is always encouraged to attend. Your representatives are Mayor Gary Clark and Council members Brian Williams, Jeff Miles, Douglas Stewart, Janice Gonzales and Dr. Scott Carmack PLANNING COMMISSION meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. The only time they don t meet is if they have nothing on the agenda. The public is always encouraged to attend. Your appointed Planning Commission members are Chairman Jay Spurlock, Members Russ Redfield, Arnold Schoenmoser, Jim Koerner, Carol Wane and Judy Boekholder.

2 PARKS Our city parks get a lot of use. If you would like to use one of our parks for a get-together or event please come to City Hall and complete a Special Events Application so we can reserve your spot on the calendar. There is no charge to use city parks. Parks and Recreation Our 11th year of the Parks & Recreation Program ran well again this spring. The program included teeball, tee-ball for tots and coach pitch. Thanks to all of the volunteers for their time and dedication to the program. Derek Brown did a great job running the program for the city this year. The city added soccer to the program last fall. It was well received and the program will continue in the fall of Zillah Skate Park The Zillah Skate Park Project was the initiative of a group of Zillah Middle School Students and Steve Gay. The group raised over $15,000 to pay for equipment. The equipment was recently installed in the old tennis court at Loges Park. We appreciate the group for identifying a need and working hard to accomplish a goal. City council was very supportive of the project and has budgeted additional money to refurbish the court, purchase signage and seating, etc. A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE to everyone who supported and to the project! donated

3 Teapot News Our beloved Teapot continues to be a well visited site in Zillah. It serves as our Visitor s Center and we see a lot of visitors at the site. Teapot products are available for sale when the Teapot is open so you can visit on Saturdays between 9-4 to get your teapot t-shirt or mug, etc. We continue to look for volunteers to work during Tourism Season. We appreciate our volunteers and want to give a special thanks to Betty Duncan for volunteering so much of her time. She will tell you that she loves it and that she has met many wonderful people in the process. Please contact Sharon Bounds at if you are interested in volunteering. Zillah Senior Citizens Zillah Chamber of Commerce The Zillah Civic Center is managed by Zillah Senior Citizens. The Zillah Senior Citizens are responsible for renting and maintaining the building in a partnership with the City of Zillah. The Zillah Senior Citizens Club has a potluck dinner meeting each month at noon on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The meals are excellent and we are fortunate to have excellent cooks in the Club. Anyone fifty five years of age or greater is welcome to join the Club. For information on the Club contact the Civic Center by calling and leave a message with your name and phone number. A member of the Senior Management Team listens to the messages each day and responds within twenty-four hours. Each month a foot clinic is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday of the second week of the month and on Thursday of the third week. Questions regarding the foot clinic may be answered by calling the Yakima Foot Clinic at Zillah Chamber of Commerce meets the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are held at the Zillah Civic Center at 8:00 a.m. Chamber President Pat Wise asked that we invite everyone to the following events: Zillah Chamber sponsors a Business After Hours each second Tues of the month at various business locations. Contact Pat Wise for the information on the next event. More-Than-A-Farmers-Market will be held on September 9th at Stewart Park. Over 50 vendors with fresh fruit and vegetables, food, crafts, woodworking, metal sculptures, local club info, kids activities, entertainment on the main stage and best of all, visit with your friends and family. 4 The City s name, Zillah, originated in honor of Miss Zillah Oakes, daughter of the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Thomas Oakes. Memorial Projects You can honor your favorite veteran by having their name etched in the face of the granite. This applies to any veteran, past or present. Veterans need not be from Zillah or even Washington State. We also include Merchant Marines, National Guard and Reserves. The only requirements: They must have honorably served in the military of the United States. The price is $100. For further information you can contact Ralph Henriksen at YARD WASTE For those of you who do gardening and don t quite know what to do with the extra waste, you can order a Yard Waste container. A one-time fee of $21.40 is imposed to bring the container to you and a monthly fee of $9.08 will be charged to your utility bill. Yakima Waste will dump your container twice per month. For further information or details about your schedule contact City Hall. The Veterans Memorial Project, which includes twenty-one (21) black granite face block sentinels is underway and we hope to complete the current phase this summer. The next phase is not yet funded and includes a brick pillar fence to match the current fencing in Teapot Dome Memorial Park. 6 Zillah Revitalization Committee The City Revitalization Committee was created for the purpose of suggesting projects and policies to encourage economic development and the revitalization of existing businesses. Clean-up Day May 20, 2017 The committee meets to discuss various ways to beautify Zillah. Early on, it was decided that the group would sponsor an annual or semi-annual clean up day. They have worked with business owners and have helped to spruce up the city. Spring Clean up day was held on Saturday, May 20th. Around 30 volunteers showed up and accomplished various cleaning projects, painting the Cookshack in Stewart Park, hydrant painting and work in the Zillah Cemetery. FYI: The Police Department offers a property watch program for those going on vacation. Forms can be picked up and completed at the Zillah Police Department (111 7th Street). The next focus will be to work with business owners in sprucing up and/or painting their storefronts throughout the city in a way that will beautify and provide consistency to the overall look of the main drag. You can access it at Zillah-Revitalization-Committee Recycle Bins. You may have noticed the nice change that took place a few months ago to the lot on the west end of Stewart Park. It was cleaned up! The city works with Yakima Waste by providing a place for their recycle bins. Many users of the bins were abusing the privilege by leaving recyclable items and also garbage outside of the bins and throughout the lot. It was a terrible mess and we appreciate the volunteers who helped clean the lot. Please help us by using the bins ONLY for recyclable items and not over-filling them. If the bins are full, please return at another time with your items.

7 A REMINDER ON SMOKE ALARMS Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Did you know that the city is part of the Yellowstone Trail? Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. Test your smoke alarms at lease once a month. When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of suppression! Fire defense is self defense. Fire destruction is one man s job. Fire prevention is everyone s job. You may have noticed signs in Zillah indicating areas that were part of the Yellowstone Trail. The Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental automobile highway in the US through the northern tier of states from WA through MA. Yet too few people are aware of its existence or its social, political and economic effects on either the local communities or the nation. For info. on the Yellowstone Trail, visit Road Construction First Avenue Meade to Pearson Street Projects: Zillah secured just under 1MIL in State funding to construct new roadway, lighting, curb, gutter and sidewalk on the north side of First Avenue between Meade Drive and Pearson Street. The project began in June and is expected to be complete near the first of September. We know that construction projects can be inconvenient and we want to thank everyone for your patience during the process. Vintage Valley Parkway Expansion: The city previously secured funding for construction of a roadway that will extend Vintage Valley Parkway to Valley SR 22 (Buena/Toppenish Road). Engineering is currently underway. Federal transportation dollars have been in flux the past few years but have been secured for this project so the estimated construction date is 2020.
