Dear Colleagues As the University winds down the 3 rd term of a busy year, we reflect back on ac vi es in the TIP ambit. Major amongst these was the hos ng of the IESA conference, which occurred at the end of August, beginning of September. Given the magnitude of this effort, we will showcase the ac vi es and outcomes of the conference in a special issue of TIP Talks. Another important event was the launch of Invotech. Please read further in this issue about Invotech, and the possibili es that exist for incuba ng and growing small business ideas. Deven Reddy and his team are keen to hear from anyone who has the seed of an idea for a new venture. For the first me, DUT has applied to the NRF for four chairs in the South African Research Chairs Ini a ve. This meant an intensive process for those researchers and facul es involved, which was facilitated and managed by our Research office. The World of Work was hosted successfully at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre; read further what students and poten al employers had to say. The IEP Directorate coordinated a successful DUT Cultural Fes val. With the Faculty of Health Sciences, TIP staff facilitated the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Indian Government at a Colloquium on Ayurveda, to establish a Research Chair on Ayurvedic Medicine. Finally, it is with sadness that we honour and pay our respects to a departed colleague. A er ba ling with ill health, Mr Doc Pillay passed away on Wednesday 7 September. Respected both at the University and amongst the IT profession and IT directors in the Higher Educa on field, Doc served the University quietly but with commi ed and determined focus and energy. We will miss him. I hope you find this issue informa ve. Regards, Prof Fred O eno, DVC: Technology, Innova on and Partnerships Radakrishnan (Doc) Pillay August 1962 September 2011 Doc Pillay, husband of Vijay and father of Priyen and Raiyen, passed away on Wednesday 7 September a er a long ba le with cancer. As Director of the IT Support Services (ITSS) Department, he managed one of the largest staff complements at the University, with the constant ba le of retaining key skills. During his 29 and a half years at DUT, Doc was responsible for a number of key projects at the University. He oversaw the installa on of an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony pla orm the University, realising that the old PABX system required a large budget simply to be maintained, and not offering the func onality and cost effec veness of a new system. He also recognised that this solu on could form the backbone of various addi onal IT projects in the planning, including being able to offer a full VOIP solu on to DUT students using WiFi-enabled phones, meaning, in his own words we are not only teaching technology but truly living it at DUT, As a member of TENET (Ter ary Educa on Network), DUT was key to the installa on of the Seacom cable for higher educa on ins tu ons in the region, with the cable node installed at the M L Sultan Campus. Doc Pillay and his colleagues were directly involved in this opera on, working closely with TENET. This came close on the heels of the Microso People Project, which, under Doc s auspices saw the University being the first HEI in the country in implemen ng the full MS suite ensuring integra on of many important business func ons. Unfortunately Doc was not see the full rewards of the DUT4Life campaign which started this year. Under his leadership, this campaign provides students and alumni of DUT with a free 10gb life me account with 25gb online storage. It is clear that Doc Pillay s legacy will live on, as new technologies and services are added to the pla orm which he so carefully assisted in pu ng in place. Those who knew Doc were familiar with his quiet but sharp sense of humour. As a friend he was loyal, as a colleague suppor ve, and as a manager encouraging and exac ng, but at all mes a gentleman. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences go to his family, his friends and his colleagues. Vol. 2, Issue 3 September 2011
FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AT THE UNIVERSITY Page 2 Dr Kathleen Nokes, Professor and Director of the Graduate Nursing Hunter College, Central University of New York, spent six weeks at DUT as a Fulbright Specialist grant holder in Public/ Global Health in July and August Dr Nokes is an Honorary Researcher and her current goals involve assis ng with building research capacity to promote greater volumes of quality research that will academically profile DUT as a des na on for future advanced scholarship. This will result in publica on of ar cles that will a ract the a en on of dis nguished scholars from the USA to come to DUT to share their interna onal recognized exper se and scholarship. Dr Nokes was hosted within the Faculty of Health Sciences and assisted with the post graduate nursing programme to include HIV/Aids educa on as an integral part of nursing curriculum and outreach prac ces. On the 3 August 2011 Dr Nokes held an informed and interac ve workshop for academics and prac oners from the health sector on the topic One Person : two infec ons : HIV/TB. She also ran a number of workshops on behalf of Research Management and Development, on wri ng for publica on. AZIBUYE EMASISWENI BACK TO OUR ROOTS The IEP Directorate organised a most successful Cultural Fes val on 9 September. Guest speakers were the KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recrea on Mrs W.G Thusi. The Na onal Minister of Arts and Culture Mr Paul Masha le was represented by his Director General Mr Sibusiso Xaba. Also at the Cultural Fes val were the following Consul Generals or their representa ves: from the Chinese Consulate, Consul General Mr Liu Yantao; Lesotho Consulate, Consul General (Ac ng) Mrs Mohapi; USA Consulate representa ve on behalf of the Consul General, Mr Deva Gonsamy; and Mozambique Consulate, Mr Eric Mbuyisa on behalf of the Consul. Stalls represen ng each country were manned by students clothed in their country s tradi onal dress, and offering samples of tradi onal foods. This was a fes ve, colourful event, marked by dancing and music, and showing the diversity of cultures on our con nent. BRAZZAVILLE, CONGO and MOZAMBIQUE NATIONAL DAYS As part of the IEP commitment to DUT s interna onal students and in the spirit of good hospitality, we acknowledge and celebrate the various na onal/independence days, special holidays and events of their countries of origin. The ini a ve emphasizes that we are proud to have interna onal students studying at our university. They are important to us as part of our drive to foster new rela ons with different countries within Africa and other con nents.
15th Annual IEASA Conference Hosted by the DURBAN UNIVERSITY of TECHNOLOGY, South Africa Page 3 The Impact of Interna onalisa on on the Quality of Higher Educa on 31 August September 2011 This conference which took place at the Greyville Racecourse conference facili es has been hailed as a watershed conference for IESA. A number of DUT staff presented papers while others were involved as session chairs and in other capaci es. Congratula ons to the IEP staff whose hard work paid off. There will be more about this conference in a special issue. LAUNCH OF BUSINESS INNOVATION HUB The 23 rd August saw the launch of Invotech, an Innova on Technology Business incubator, at the Hotel School Conference Centre. This is an ini a ve driven by the Enterprise Development Unit in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA). The business incubator emanated from a proposal submi ed by the Enterprise Development Unit to the funder, SEDA. The purpose of the incubator is to a ract SMME businesses and industry with ideas of new innova ons and technologies, to set up their business opera ons and projects through Invotech. The advantage of the incubator being associated with DUT is that this allows tenants and virtual businesses to have access to specialised mentors from the different facul es within the university community. A video presenta on of the InvoTech clients was showcased at the launch. These clients include many staff, students and community at large who through research, crea- ve thinking and entrepreneurial spirit, foster ideas that have commercialisa on possibili es. The incubator aims to assist in loca ng the necessary skills, exper se and funding to develop such products and services and take these into the marketplace, making the move from mind to market. Amongst the key speakers of the day were the University s Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Ahmed Bawa, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chair of the InvoTech Board, Professor Fred O eno, and Director of the Enterprise Development Unit and Execu ve Manager of SEDA Technology Programme, Mr Colin Thakur. The speakers all spoke highly of this ini a ve emphasising on how important it is to keep up with technology in mes of rapid change. Mr Deven Reddy is the first port of call should you wish to discuss any business ideas devenr@dut.ac.za or on We look forward to seeing many innova ons and new technologies being converted into sustainable and commercially viable enterprises. RESEARCH OFFICE ORGANISES WOMEN S DAY EVENT Three powerful women addressed a gathering at the Hotel School to celebrate Women s Day. Dr Lungile Bhenu, a KwaZulu-Natal Developmental and Planning Commissioner, Dr Lubna Nadvi, an ac vist and lecturer from the University of KwaZulu-Natal s School of Poli cs, and Dr Oshadi Mangena, Execu ve Director at The Pitseng Women s Trust Fund, each gave insigh ul presenta ons on the role of women in South Africa, from their own perspec ves. CO OPERATIVE EDUCATION UNIT S INDUSTRY INDABA At an Industry Indaba, hosted by the Vice Chancellor in conjunc on with the SASCE KZN Regional Forum early in September, an online intelligent management and tracking system for Co-opera ve Educa on and Work-Integrated Learning, was launched. Speakers included Professor Bawa and Ms Adrienne Bird, Ac ng CEO of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupa- ons (QCTO). Both speakers addressed many ques ons, including What are industries views of the new HEQF? How do the Further Educa on and Training (FET) colleges adjust to the increased levels of work experience required? Where does the QCTO fit, what is its mandate and how does it relate to universi es and FETs?
Page 4 On the 18 th and 19 th of August the Co-opera ve Educa on Unit held the 2011 World of Work (WOW) exhibi on in the Fred Crookes Sports Centre. Work integrated learning (WIL) is aimed at achieving the following: To expose learners to challenging learning experiences related to work. To assist learners to start with career plans during their studies. To formulate learning programmes that will address the needs of commerce, industry and the public sector in general. For learners to understand the relevance of the theore cal aspects of their courses. For learners to develop be er human rela ons by working with individuals from different disciplines and backgrounds. To improve job prospects a er gradua on, as learners gain prac cal experience during their studies. Gregory David from Toyota Tsusho Africa (PTY) Ltd, one of the many companies that par cipated in the exhibi on, says WOW is an excellent pla orm for both students and companies. It enlightens student about the different possibili es that are available and it also gives them a clear view and understanding of the business arena. Second year students Anele Nkwanyana who is studying Analy cal Chemistry and Nhlakanipho Mzobe who is studying Public Management both say that WOW has helped them in terms of learning how to apply for jobs as they are about to venture into their in-service training in their third year. The students say that they have also benefited in gaining many contacts and they heard of the DUT-4-life service which they did not know about. At a gala dinner held for the companies, various speakers highlighted the importance of students understanding that they had to take responsibility and be accountable for their learning, as well as ensuring that they learn to communicate professionally and with confidence. Further advice given to students is the importance of paying a en on to the economy as this will give a clear perspec ve on which fields of employment are buoyant, thus ensuring that they are employable.
BUSINESS BREAKFAST WITH THE BSU The BSU is invi ng companies and DUT staff to a Business Breakfast at the Coastlands Hotel, 27 September The guest speaker will be Professor Ahmed Bawa, Vice Chancellor and Principal, and the introduc on will be given by Professor Fred O eno, Deputy Vice Chancellor, TIP. BSU GRADUATIONS The Gauteng City Regional Academy gradua on ceremony in April saw 187 BTech Management students graduate. At the September (Spring) gradua on ceremony in Durban, a further 116 BTech Management students graduated. Congratula ons to all. BSU S NEW LOCATION Page 5 BSU Durban has set up its marke ng and delivery opera ons from the BSU house at 10 Botanic Avenue. The Convoca on and Alumni offices are adjacent to this building. AYURVEDA AT DUT A Colloquium on Ayurveda, recently held at DUT, was a ended by a number of dignatories, including the Indian Consul General in Durban, Mr Anil Sharan, the University s Chancellor Ms Ela Gandhi, Dr Jayaram Reddy Chair of Council, and Professor Ahmed Bawa, Vice Chancellor and Principal. Mr Greg Bass, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences gave an overview of his faculty, and three speakers from India, Dr Ramesh Babu Devalla, Prof Syed Shakir Jamil and Dr Manoj Nesari spoke about the concept and scope of Ayurveda. Dr TR Govender, a South African ayurvedic prac oner, spoke on the status and prospect of Ayurveda in South Africa. The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Government of India and the University, specifically to establish a Chair in Ayurveda. Poten ally this could result in ayurvedic prac oners studying at DUT to gain a qualifica on. Seen as a knowledge-sharing opportunity, CVs of experts from India are already being scru nised. At present there are only 14 ayurvedic prac oners registered in South Africa. These prac oners, by law, have to register with the Allied Health and Professionas Council of South Africa, and they have to have completed a five and a half years Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery degree, at present only obtainable in either India or Pakistan. Ayurveda is a holis c approach to medicine, relying on the three doshas (specific elements of nature) to keep the body (which is seen as microcosm of the universe) in tune with the world around us.
