1 Newsletter nebraska chapter american concrete institute PO Box ACI Nebraska Representa ves A end Fall Conven on Steve Wobken and Jereme Montgomery a ended the ACI Fall Conven on held in Pi sburgh from October There were approximately 1500 a endees and a full schedule of commi ee mee ngs and educa onal sessions. Steve is an associate member of technical commi ee s 130 and 330. Jereme is an associate member of 332 and 522. They were able to a end a number of the mee ngs and presenta ons with a few being as follows: ACI 130-Sustainability. Steve Wobken currently sits on three sub-commi ees and is an associate member of the main commi ee. The primary focus of this group is to produce a final document. A great deal of progress has been made, but we s ll have a fair distance to go. The goal is to have all chapters completed and balloted by the sub-commi ees by the next conven on. This would allow nega ve comments to be addressed at the next conven on and submit a complete document to the Technical Advisory Commi ee a er the Tampa Spring Conven on. Volume XXIII Issue No. 4 NOVEMBER We also had Lisa Jin Bradley with AECOM give an update. Lisa is a toxicologist who was working with Dick Stehly on the EPA Fly Ash ruling. She stated that the ruling has become primarily poli cal. The EPA is s ll considering making Fly Ash a hazardous material under sub tle C if it is to be land filled. Fly Ash designated for beneficial use such as in concrete will be covered by a sub tle D classifica on and be non-hazardous. The main issue is sub tle C allows the EPA to control disposal whereas sub tle D allows the states to regulate disposal. DeLorm rdelorm@msn.com Phone Executive Secretary s Report I have been with the ACI Nebraska Chapter since it s inception in When the chapter was chartered we had a membership of 46 members. Within the next year our membership rose to over 200, thanks to the efforts of our first Membership VP and his band of dedicated recruiters. We were then able to apply for incorporation as a non-profit Corporation in Nebraska and accepted by the Post Office to mail at a non-profit rate. We have used this status to run the ACI Chapter ever since. Our Chapter continued to grow and we reached a membership of over 350 members. Then our membership began to decline and we have been on a downward slide for the past three years. Some have speculated that the decline was due to a bad economy. In any case, we are approaching a level of membership that we may lose our non-profit mailing status. The solution to this problem is to recruit new members or get back the members who have dropped from the rolls. Our membership is very diverse as was pointed out by the Membership Report from the last newsletter. Membership costs are $30 per year for regular associates and $5 for current students, a small cost for membership in one of the countries best ACI Chapters. We have been and continue to be an award winning ACI Chapter, the envy of most of the chapters in the nation. Dr. R.T. DeLorm

6 Nebraska Chapter ACI page 6 FALL CONVENTION... continued from Page 1 The EPA has stated that they do not believe that taking fly ash to a sub tle C classifica on will affect the industry in any way. There has been a reported case of a school in California refusing the use of fly ash in their concrete. Everyone should be aware of these possibili es and report such cases to the EPA. So far the Sierra Club and other environmental groups have done a be er job of wri ng le ers to support their posi on. Our industry needs to match their intensity and write le ers to support our posi on. We have the facts and data on our side, but could s ll lose based solely on the wave of le ers against fly ash and ul mately the coal industry. Follow this link to submit your own le er to support fly ash use - h p:// Le ers and comments are due by November 19th. commi ee to become the ACI 329 document. This group will be looking at other performance standards around the world and present guidelines to wri ng performance based specifica ons. ACI 330-Parking Lots and Site Paving. A endees shared success stories and updates. Two of interest were a North Carolina promo on group successfully converted the parking lot of an asphalt supplier to concrete. Also Jerry Holland reported on projects that he is working on where the joint spacing has been pushed to 40 feet on six inch pavement with the use of macro-polymeric fibers. The commi ee is also working on two documents currently under development; revising Standard Specifica on and crea ng 330.xR Guide for the Design and Construc on of Concrete Pavements for Trucking and Industrial Facili es (new). ACI 332-Residen al Concrete. This group has just completed a document revision and has now turned their a en on to the guide document. Jereme Montgomery brought his sugges on to change the durability requirements from a minimum strength of 4500 psi and 0.45 w/cm ra o to an average strength of 4500 psi and 0.45 w/cm ra o, this would be more in line with a minimum compressive strength (f c) of 4000psi. Jereme feels if the building code (318) requires 4500 and 0.45 then should driveways (non-structural) have the same requirements? It created some interes ng discussion but ul mately the group felt with driveways scaling and failing it would not be good to lower standards. ACI 332 did make a mo on to include a sec on within 332 to include exterior slabs. The current document on includes exterior requirements under the materials chapter. This addi on to include verbiage of exterior may be be er received by trades. In a separate session presenta on dealing with the carbon footprint of the US cement and concrete industries fly ash was also discussed. Julie Rapoport with CalStar Cement Products, did a good overview of the impact of our industry and the goals and projec ons of mi ga on. The biggest opportunity the cement and concrete industries have to mi gate CO2 is through increased use of fly ash. Mi ga on efforts from show a reduc on of 200 million metric tons of CO2 versus if business had con nued as usual. With increased fly ash use another 200 million tons could be reduced by 2020 and another 1.7 Billion tons by If fly ash is taken out of the equa on, these numbers will be increases of 180 million tons by 2020 and 1.55 Billion tons by Other means of reduc on the industry is considering are finding natural pozzolans, and renewable energy sources. ACI 329-Perfomance Ready Mix. This is a new commi ee which began with the NRMCA P2P ini a ve. Currently a document has been wri en called the ITG 8 Report. This document will be balloted to the members of the ACI 522-Pervious Concrete. The commi ee discussed accurately measuring core thickness for pervious concrete. A task group has been formed and is inves ga ng proper methods and standards to measure the thickness for pervious cores. The commi ee is also working on revising pervious specifica on to include current standards and prac ces. Another key topic from the commi ee is standardizing details for pervious concrete. Conclusion ACI technical documents are dynamic. They change over me with the input from commi ee members to define and refine current standards and guidelines. Steve and Jereme both feel that ge ng involved with technical commi ees is a cri cal part of being an ACI Na onal Member. By applying for commi ee membership they are able to be on the forefront of upcoming changes to technical documents, therefore, being able to communicate these changes sooner to ACI NE membership.

Nebraska Chapter ACI page 7 Program Committee Report Submi ed by Michael Gerdes ACI Nebraska s Fall Breakfast Series Offer Informa ve Sessions The fall breakfast series has included two excellent presenta ons so far. Mr. Steve Weidenhammer, P.E. of Thiele Geotech presented a tes ng laboratory perspec ve on the reconstruc on and addi ons of runways and taxiways at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Nebraska. Eppley Airfield has seen major construc on ac vi es in both 2009 and Jereme Montgomery of the Nebraska Concrete and Aggregates Associa on and Michael Willman of Grace Performance Chemicals co-presented on freeze-thaw durability of concrete. The durability presenta on focused on scaling. The long harsh winter of certainly took its toll on pavements in Nebraska and our surrounding states. Both presenta ons included in depth ques on and answer sessions. Next Mee ng to Feature LCC Our next breakfast mee ng will be on research on Low Carbon Concrete (LCC) and its significantly reduced CO2 footprint, with increased strength and improved durability. The Low Carbon Concrete (LCC) presenta on is being planned for late November or early December. The Annual Banquet and ACI Nebraska Chapter Awards of Excellence Presenta on is in the works for early February of. The date is scheduled for February 12, and the program will commence at approximately 7:00 pm.
