Summary of Activities during 2017 Regular Meetings Members of NAZCA Student Chapter scheduled formal appointments every two weeks and more frequently near the arrival of a project. Although, since this year, we have been having meetings every week because we also have Leapfrog classes for the new NAZCA members. The final months of 2017 we had meeting twice a week because we were planning a field trip with the Stewart R. Wallace Funding, obtained on the second round of At the beginning of the academic year (March 2018), we post posters, so new students can get interested and we invited them to a formal meeting with the purpose of motivate and affiliate new members interested in the economic geology field as SEG members.

4 Organization Field Trip On 2017 we planned a field trip to Visit the southern extension of the Miocene-Pliocene porphyry belt of Central Chile with the aim of carry out a geological transect from Central Valley to western slope of the fold and thrust belt near the Chile-Argentian border lead by PhD Osvaldo Rabbia and PhD candidate Pablo Salas from the Universidad de Concepción. Nevertheless, we couldn t achieve that on time, because the area was reactivated for mining operations, and our teachers had to travel abroad. The beginning of this year we had to reschedule and change the location of the field trip, deciding going to a high sulfidization epithermal gold deposit, ubicated in the precordillera, near Chillan city. The deposit was an old mine, called Minas del Prado, and is characterized by the occurrence of nine veins and hydrothermal brecchia, hosted in tertiaty volcanic-piroclastic rocks. The gold mineralization occurs in this vein accompanied with quartz. The mine potential has been estimated around tons, with an ore grade of 2.3 g/t of Au. Nowadays, news studies have begun to look after a reopening. The Field trip was done on April 28 of 2018 and lead by PhD Miroslav Rodríguez Bakulic and PhD Candidate Pablo Salas. Miroslav Rodríguez is the general manager of GEOCRONOS, a geology exploration consultant company, which works also with BHP Billiton, Antofagasta Minerals Group, Anglo American, among others, having many years of experience. The PhD Osvaldo Rabbia couldn t gone but helped us in the trip organization. The objective of this trip was learned about hydrothermal alterations, metallic mineralization, structures controls, mapping galleries, gold placers and epithermal model. The Executive Comitte prioritized SEG members for the field trip plus two invitations for two exchange students from Germany (Cordula Haupt and Thilo May) who also are Student Chapter members of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg University, creating bonds with them, so we could work together in future plans. 7 As we mentioned at the beginning, NAZCA is teaching Leapfrog classes for the new members, so they can use the license we got for prior projects ( period). So far, we had 4 lessons and we are planning to work with PhD Verónica Pineda in her classes for sophomore students, so they can view geological maps in 3D view. Class group learning how to model with Leapfrog program. Fund-raising programs The funds with which we manage our projects come from the Stewart R. Wallace scholarship, inherited in the year 2017 and some raising from food selling. Future plans To the present year, we have planned to continue with the formal appointments, keep informed the studentship about the Student Chapter activities with the intention of promote Economic Geology and SEG association, and keep working with the Leapfrog License. We also want to do an inclusion fluids course, lead by PhD Santiago Collao in our second semester (August-December), be part of the XV Chilean Geological Congress hold by our university on November and apply to the second round Stewart R. Wallace scholarship with another field trip project, because is the best way to learn geology.
