Message from the committee This is the activity report of the University of Campinas UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter from Late 2016 to This year we focused on organizing a field trip, talks and extending our professional network during events, also trying to raise funds for our current and future activities. The UNICAMP SEG Student Chapter was established in 2009 and counts now with 18 members. These members are under-graduate and graduate students of Geology in the university, the latter counting with both doctoral and masters level students. Unfortunately, the mineral exploration industry in Brazil is facing a protractedlow level of investments. In face of this adverse scenario, the number of interested students in economic geology has decreased given the limited job market. Regardless of that, the Chapter has aimed in 2017 to raise the interest in mineral exploration. For this, we tried to provide activities to discuss the future of the global and national mineral exploration industry. In order to achieve this we organized a field trip to an important mineral district in Brazil and organized talks by speakers as Mr. Dan Wood and Gustavo Mello from ADIMB (Agency for the Technological Development of the Brazilian Mineral Industry). As a result of these efforts was observed an increase in the number of undergraduate participants in our group. Even considering the uncertainties regarding the future of the mineral exploration industry, the interest of the students in economic geology has been raised. We are proud of the activities we engaged this year and we are thankful for the support from SEG. Our efforts from now on are focused on organizing short-courses, workshops, national meetings with other Brazilian SEG Student Chapters. Additionally, we have plans to seek financial support to organize another field trip. 6 Activities o Regular meetings Our group organizes regular meetings once a month and eventual ones when close to developing activities such as talks, field trips, and short-courses. During these meetings, we discussed ideas for activities, funding opportunities and mainly devised tasks on event organization. o Industry partnerships Since 2016 our group maintained a partnership with ARANZ Geo Limited, the distributor of the LEAPFROG GEO geological modeling tool. This agreement is part of ARANZ interest on spreading its product along the geological and exploration community offering free licensing to universities abroad housing SEG student chapters. A number of 10 licenses were conceded to UNICAMP community in 2016, some of them destined to be installed on computational laboratories for both undergraduate and graduate alumni, with two licenses reserved for Professors Diego Ducart and Carlos Roberto de Souza Filho from UNICAMP s Institute of Geosciences which share interests in the software. This agreement was a joint effort of the Student Chapter s ex-president (João Motta) and Professor Diego Ducart while in contact with the professional geologist Marcelo Freitas from ARANZ Geo Latin-America during 2016 July. This is a most interesting partnership as the students of the university can get access to Leapfrog which is an important geological modeling software. It is important to state that software use is intended to stick to research interests. o Talks From November 2016, to now (September 2017), our group organized four talks. On November 22, we received the Professor Christophe Renac from Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis - France. Professor Renac is engaging a project with Professor Maria José of Institute of Geosciences UNICAMP. As part of this project, he spent three months in Brazil. During this time period, he gave us a talk entitled Trace elementssulfides interaction in oxide and anoxyde sediments. His research subjects and talk were deeply technical, and the major spectators were masters and Ph.D. candidates, with good adherence of professors from the Geosciences Institute. On June 30, the geologist Andrés Luis Navarro gave a talk regarding geological features, mapping techniques and prospection of Chilean and Argentinian Andean Cupriferous Porphyries. He presented a good overview of most useful tools used in this kind of geologic environment with more than twenty years experience on it. The public present encompassed undergraduate students of last year of the geology course and masters and Ph.D. candidates.

Andrés Luis Navarro in the auditory of Geoscience Institute of UNICAMP On August 24, we received the Thayler Lindsey Visiting Lecturer Mr. Dan Wood from Australia. Mr. Dan Wood gave us a short seminar of two hours entitled Future Exploration How We Will Need to Explore. In this talk, he provided some insights regarding what tools the mineral exploration industry will use in the future and what sort of terranes have been underestimated. These potential techniques and environments represent a paradigm that may be re-evaluated. This seminar had a good adherence with professional geologists, professors, graduate and undergraduate students. Additionally, we were pleased to welcome students from University of São Paulo (USP) and State University of São Paulo (UNESP) SEG Student Chapters. Mr. Dan Wood during his short seminar at Institute of Geoscience of UNICAMP. On September 24, the geologist Gustavo Mello from ADIMB (Agency for the Technological Development of the Brazilian Mineral Industry) presented a two-hour talk entitled of Panorama and Perspective of Future Mineral Exploration in Brazil. As mentioned in the message from the committee, the geology students need to understand the moment of mineral exploration in Brazil, and mainly motivation to continue study economic geology even in this adverse moment. As we expect, the lecture had good adherence students from last year of geology course.

Geologist Gustavo Mello from ADIMB on his talk. Students and Professor watching the talk of Gustavo Mello from ADIMB o Short courses o Different Sources and Fluids Ages in Diagenetic and Hydrothermal Systems: Stable Isotopes and Ar-Ar Studies This short course has been presented by Professor Christophe Renac in a four days timeframe. This specific topic attracted masters and Ph.D. students, mainly those who are researching crustal evolution and metallogeny. This was a very good opportunity for many graduate-level students in our student which are engaging on isotope geology.

Professor Christophe Renac during the short course. Sadly, problems with schedule prevented some short-courses that were in our program. On June, Professor Fátima Bitencourt from UFRGS (the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) would come to our university for five days short-course about intrusive rocks; however, her schedule for last semester was full. Despite that problem, we hope to bring her to our university next year; we think this topic is very interesting for students of our chapter and our community that work with this kind of geologic scenario. We considered short courses a great interaction opportunity with professionals from different institutes with different points of view, and a good chance to review and learn new relevant topics. For next season, we will try to increase the number of relevant short courses as the same level of o Participation in events Carajás Mineral Province Expedition The Agency for the Technological Development of the Brazilian Mineral Industry (ADIMB) granted for two members of our chapter for attending the Carajás Mineral Province Expedition. This Expedition took place between July 09 and 16. The two local members that took part in this opportunity were José Henrique Matos and Verônica Trevisan jointed to more 17 SEG S.C. members from another Brazilian universities. ADIMB covered all costs for the expedition. The visit had the support of Vale and AVANCO field team. Professor Caetano Juliani from the University of São Paulo and Professor Marcondes Lima da Costa from the Federal University of Pará gave technical support to the students. The general coordination was in charge of the geologist Gustavo Mello from ADIMB. The expedition was accompanied by talks about mineral economic dynamics, regional geology, metallogeny, and weathering process. Important iron, IOCG (Iron oxide copper-gold) and manganese mine/deposits were visited (Salobo copper mine, Azul manganese, N4 mine and S11D iron mines Vale projects; Antas Norte AVANCO project, and Serra Verde copper deposit).

Carajás Province, the red boxes show the deposits/mines visited in the expedition (modified from Vasquez et al. 2008). National S.C. meeting in Parauapebas (during Carajás Expedition) Nowadays, 36 geology courses are scattered around Brazil. Some of these courses have been active for 10 years or less. Due to a country continental dimension, most of works/research in economic geology does not spread around the country. Moreover, students who have an affinity with economic geology and mineral exploration have problems of insertion in the job market. In this sense, two meetings with participation of members from almost all Brazilian S.C., including José Henrique Matos and Verônica Trevisan, occurred during the expedition targeted to propose one national event to integrate all students of economic geology. One of the meetings was accompanied by Gustavo Mello (ADIMB) and by Professor Caetano Juliani, who offered both logistical and technical support. We defined to perform a two-day event before the next Brazilian Symposium of Mineral Exploration (SIMEXMIN) on May, The main goal of the event is to promote the interaction among undergraduate and graduate students with professional geologists. The event has a conference layout with main lectures (SEG lectures and institutional ones) oral and poster presentations. o Field Trip Quadrilatero Ferrífero field trip The Quadrilátero Ferrífero field trip was organized by the UNICAMP SEG chapter, according to SEG committee instructions and partially funded by the SEG Stewart R. Wallace Fund (Student Chapter Grants for Field-Based Education October 2015 round). It was carried out in six days, from March 7th to March 12th, including transfers to Nova União and Ouro Preto regions, visits to gold mines, and two regional traverses. The field trip report is available on: ers.aspx.

o Other activities Field notebook and T-shirts sales Looking forward to raising funds for our activities we are selling a field notebook among our community. We sold almost all of the 150 field notebooks we ordered back in Additionally, we are making 75 new t-shirts with UNICAMP SEG Chapter merchandise. Almost all of the 75 t-shirts are reserved for our community, and we expect to raise almost R$ 500,00. Interactions overseas Our Student Chapter member João Motta spent a three-month period at Monash University in Melbourne Australia following a grant by the Australian Academy of Sciences for Latin-American graduate students. João developed part of his research on applied geophysics for IOCG districts in the host university from 2017 June to September. During this time period, João engaged with the local Student Chapter to learn ways in managing activities and reach wider audiences in our local community and abroad. The Monash chapter was kind active that time and João attended to several talks during that period. João even presented a talk to the local community on July 25 entitled IOCG deposits in Brazil a brief view. The purpose of the talk was to raise awareness of the existence and diversity in both style and time frame observed in Brazilian IOCG deposits. Monash chapter president - Christopher Voisey - was very proactive and presented lots of opportunities for research and job market in the Australian environment. Further plans For the next year, we already started to organize a national event for economic geology students. The event will be a joint effort of all Brazilian SEG student chapters. The main goal is the integration of all students that have an affinity with economic geology. Furthermore, we want to promote interaction between students and professionals. Likely to 2017 we would like to promote a field trip in Probably, this time the field trip will be in partnership with USP (University of São Paulo) SEG S.C. We are currently outlining the possibilities, focusing on two alternatives. The first one is in São Paulo State (Brazil), in the Ribeira Valley region, so we could visit a phosphate mine in Jacupiranga, and Au and Pb deposits at Apiaí. Another opportunity is to visit the Neoproterozoic Brasilia belt in Goiás State (Brazil) to check the existing Ni, Nb, Zn, Pb and Au deposits. However, the second option has many additional costs. Usually, despite the costs to promote events, our chapter always tries to provide lectures and short courses free of charge to our community, mainly because many students cannot afford to pay. Our goal is to maintain one or two short courses, and several relevant lectures. To do it, we will continue to sell our products and seek support from our graduate program, SEG funds, and from the mining industry. As in 2017 we kept our eyes on lectures and talks that provided insights into the mineral exploration scenario, in the next season we would like more academic events that talk about the process of ore deposit formation.
