2 UNIVERSITÉ DU QUÉBEC À CHICOUTI SEG-UQAC STUDENT CHAPTER Annual report for academic year The academic year was an active and successful one for the Chicoutimi student chapter. In addition to growing our membership base we completed a short field trip in Abitibi to visit two active mines an also organized a short course during the Carrefour des Sciences de la Terre (march 22-24, 2017). The student chapter was also successful in organizing a workshop during the 2017 XPLOR and another one at the Québec Mines 2017 meeting with the Université Laval INRS-ETE and Montréal (UQAM) students chapters. 1. Regular meetings The student chapter held meetings at least once a month in conformity to successfully organize its activity. Agenda of the meetings were prepared by the president and archived by the secretary. A new committee has been elected for the academic year. It is composed of Quentin Fayard (President, MSc student), Alizée Lienard (Vice president, MSc student), Anick Tremblay (Treasurer, undergraduate student) and Mike Bellemare (Secretary, undergraduate student). 2. Field Trip The committee of the student chapter organized a short trip in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. Over the course of 4 days (February 27 2 march, 2017), participants had the opportunity to visit underground operations of precious and base metals mineralizations. The first visit was held at the Goldex Mines in which participants had a good opportunity to visit a low grade high tonnage Lode gold deposit. During this visit participants received an overview of the geology of the deposits and the mining camp but also had the opportunity to see the ore and the installation underground. The second visit was held in the Doyon-Bousquet-Laronde mining camp and took place at the Laronde world-famous Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfides deposit. This allowed participants to get more familiar with the settings of VMS deposits but also gave them an opportunity to visit one of Québec top gold producers.
3 Both of the visits were held by local mine geologist and were done under the geology and exploration team supervision of Agnico Eagle. The group was formed of 4 undergrad students and 3 master students and we are very grateful of the visit, talk and opportunity Agnico Eagle Mines gave to us. 3. Organisation of workshop As part of the Carrefour des Sciences de la Terre held at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (march 22-24, 2017) the student chapter organized a 4 hours workshop. This workshop was given by Jean-Philippe Paiement (project geologist, SGS Canada). Following the mediated win of the Integra Gold Rush Challenge the year before. Jean-Philippe agreed to give a short course on the basics of the machine learning, the different algorithms available and also on the geological interest, limitations and idea behind its use with practical examples. The student chapter organized a whole day workshop during the XPLOR convention that will be held on October 17th by Lucie Mathieu (UQAC). The title of the workshop is : Recognize and quantify hydrothermal alteration. Lucie has been working with the Consorem for the last few years and will now be teaching geology full-time at the Université du Québec a Chicoutimi. The participant will have the opportunity to learn from Lucie the different tools availible to describe and quantify the presence and intensity of alteration commonly use in exploration with practical exemples. The last workshop we are currently finalizing is in collaboration with the Université Laval INRS-ETE and Montreal (UQAM) students chapters. This workshop will take place during the Québec Mines 2017 meeting (November 20-23, 2017) and will be title Gold Deposits: Genetic Models and Exploration Methods. The short course will be held at the Centre des Congrès de Québec, Monday November 20th from 9AM to 5 PM. This workshop will be given by Richard Goldfarb, Iain Pitcairn and Stephen Piercey. The details of the workshop and the resume will be coming in the next weeks. 4. Conferences and meetings attended by SEG members This year the SEG student chapter did not organize transportation and accommodation for the undergraduate and graduate students of Chicoutimi to assist conferences & meetings. On that behalf, undergraduate and graduate students used their respective assembly committee to get founds and setup transportation. We agreed that these events are very important for students. They are a useful platform to get in touch with industry representative and we think the SEG student chapter should get more involved in it in the next years. List of conferences & meetings attended by SEG members (one or more) - XPLOR, Montréal (October 3-7, 2016)
4 - Québec Mines, Québec (November 21-24, 2016) - PDAC, Toronto (March 5-8, 2017) - Carrefour des Sciences de la Terre, Chicoutimi (March 22-24, 2017) - SGA, Québec (August 20-23, 2017) 5. Fund-raising programs The following funding (5447 CAD$) has been collected to finance the activity of the student chapter. The main activity was the field trip in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt and make it as less expensive as possible to the participant. Most of the funding came from the organisation of various short courses. The balance of the income will be availible for the committee to finance their various activities. REVENUS Amount (CAD$) Students contribution to field trip 385 Xplor Short course UQAC 2525 Total Spent (outcomes) For the year the Chicoutimi SEG student chapter had expenses of 2238 CAD$. Most of it was to cover the organization of the field trip in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in February EXPENSES Cost (CAD$) Hotel Vehicule rental Gas 297 SGS (short course) 1513,68 General meeting 278,75 Total 2237,78
5 6. Future plans The aims of the Chimitoumi SEG student chapter are to : 1) grow our membership base by reaching out to more graduate but mostly undergraduate students within the geology department; 2) Plan local field trip, lectures and generate more activity with the students. These lectures could be given by industry professionals or also by students working specific projects. Following the election of the new committee a field trip taking place at the end of spring should be planned. Similar trip have been done by the student chapter in the past (Morocco, Chile, Thailand and Western Canada for example). Members of the last committee will offer their help for the planning of this future field trip.
