1.1 OVERVIEW The SEG Student Chapter plays an essential role in the activities of CODES, making significant contributions to the social and professional lives of students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. As usual, the chapter has been heavily involved in coordinating guest lectures, field trips, and social events. Typically, undergraduate students have not been well represented as chapter members; the year has seen a stronger focus on including undergraduates in lectures and student events. We have been especially successful in engaging these students through informal mentorship activities and social events. 1.2 LIST OF CHAPTER MEMBERS Note: All members are current students and SEG members (2017). n = 33 Title Surname FirstName Title Surname FirstName Mr Abersteiner Adam Mr Ferguson Matthew Mrs Ahmed Ayesha Mrs Gnoinski Gail Mr Andemeskel Eyob Mr Wells Tristan Mr Chapman Nathan Mr Leslie Christopher Mr Cherry Alexander Mrs Jennifer Thompson Mr Doutch David Mr Ben Kowaluk Ms Escolme Angela Miss Imbi Simpson Ms Harraden Cassady Mr Josh Denholm Mr Hood Shawn Ms Sylvie Mace Miss Chen Jing Mr Emmet O'Keefe Mr Knight Joseph Mr Justin Burns-Nichols Miss Lawlis Erin Mr Matthew Vincent Mr McNulty Brian Mr Juan Rojas-Lopez Miss Mukherjee Indrani Ms Sarah Gilmour Ms Sharma Subira Mr Brydon Derley Mr Wei Hong Mr Sun Yi Mr Josh Phillips The elected executive committee for are Shawn Hood (President), Joseph Knight (Vice- President), Ayesha Ahmed (Treasurer), and Adam Abersteiner (Secretary). These special positions are held by Cassady Harraden (Social Engagement and Social Media Officer) and Alexander Cherry (Quartermaster).

1.3 SUMMARY OF ANNUAL ACTIVITIES Lectures and Meetings The Annual General Meeting for the outgoing executive committee was held October 4 th, The current executives were elected at this meeting, and the upcoming general meeting to elect a new executive will take place on October 6 th, Regular student chapter meetings were generally held on a monthly basis or more often when required. Student Chapter Talks The tradition of holding regular lectures was maintained in , ranging from informal 20- minute technical talks to three hour seminars. The chapter attracted a diverse array of first class speakers who spoke on a variety of subjects, summarised in Table 1 with highlights given below. Table 1. 6 Vic Wall, who sadly passed away in October 2017, delivered the 2016 Michael Solomon Memorial (Figure 1). Vic had over 45 years experience in mining, teaching and research, including formative interactions with Professor Solomon, as one of Mike s PhD students, early in his career. This annual event is held in honour of the esteemed UTAS/CODES teacher and researcher, Professor Mike Solomon, who passed away in Speakers are chosen who have strong links with Mike. Vic s presentation, entitled Gold and granitoid plutonism, covered research that built on Mike s pioneering work in this area of study. Figure 1. Vic Wall speaks about Thermal Aureole Gold deposit models during 2016 Michael Solomon Memorial lecture. Another highlight from was the chapter s hosting of Tasmanian Minister for Mines and Resources, the Hon. Guy Barnett, on Wednesday August 2017 (Figure 2). Minister Barnett attended the department for several hours as a guest of the CODES-SEG. Staff and students received an update on the state of mineral resources in Tasmania, along with the Minister s thoughts on potential future employment for UTAS graduates in the sector. Afterward, during a lengthy question-and-answer period, a range of related discussions took place.

Figure 2.The Honourable Minister of Mining and Resources, Guy Barnett, gives an overview of the current mining scene in Tasmania Two speaking events involving chapter members dealt specifically with providing practical information to undergraduates. The aim of these was to share details of chapter members early-career successes. On May 25, 2017, Ayesha Ahmed coordinated four postgraduate to give four 15 minute presentations under the banner My Experience in Industry (Figure 3). Josh Phillips, Laura Jackson, Jacob Mulder, and Jing Chen gave excellent overviews on their career paths thus far, and reflections on which choices and experiences had been most valuable. Most interesting was the diversity of paths between the speakers, differing nationalities, and relative experiences in academia or industry. The function was attended by more than 30 undergraduates. During a half-time break and afterwards these students networked with post-graduates. On August 30 th, 2017, Shawn Hood gave an invited talk to the University of Tasmania AusIMM chapter, which is dominantly composed of undergraduates, at their annual general meeting. This talk was entitled Leadership and Networking. Figure 3. Undergraduate students listen to postgraduates relate their experiences in industry

Conferences One of the key areas where the students contribute to enhancing their academic profile is by attending and presenting papers at domestic and international conferences. A number of our chapter members have presented at conferences across the world during the year. These include student chapter members presenting topics of their research at the SGA conference in Quebec City, Canada, Goldschmidt conference in Paris, France, FUTORES II conference in Townsville, Australia, Mining Geology conference in Hobart, Tasmania, and Drilling for Geology II conference in Brisbane, Australia. Three student chapter members attended the 2017 SEG Conference in Beijing. These three students received support from the SEG to attend the conference and presented four oral presentations related to their PhD research. Short Courses and Workshops Portable XRF Workshop 19 September, 2017, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia The student chapter assisted in promoting and organising a portable XRF workshop in conjunction with the AusIMM and CSIRO as part of the Tenth International Mining Geology Conference In return for organizing the logistics, SEG members were offered a significantly discounted course rate, making the workshop more accessible to students. Workshop leader Michael Gazley (CSIRO) used case-studies to highlight best-practice pxrf data collection and post-collection processing methods. The course was well attended by undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as industry participants from Canada, the United States, and Chile. Fundraising and Social Coffee and Milk Our chapter provides a small tea and coffee station for staff and postgraduates, with weekly milk delivery to the chapter fridge. Payment for this is via an honesty box which essentially covers costs of the service and generates a nominal amount of income for the chapter. Supply of Field Gear Our Quartermaster, Alex Cherry, coordinates a range of essential geological equipment including mineral ID kits for undergraduates, hammers, hand lenses of every description, notebooks, and more. Pricing is designed so that key equipment for field work is provided nearly at cost, and other items with a small (<10%) mark-up in price. This service keeps students in possession of key equipment and is an irreplaceable means of firstengagement by undergraduate members with the chapter. Patches Iron-on patches of our chapter logo were designed and created. These are now available for sale, and the proceeds will go toward funding chapter activities.

SEG Winter Warmers The locus of CODES and the SEG student chapter is the communal lunch room. In 2017 we continued the winter warmer trend by providing affordable homemade soup and bread, both as a social exercise and to fundraise. The most intense event in 2017 involved a cook-off challenge: Russian-made vs. Australian-made borscht. Both nationals made their country proud that day, but the Russian soup was a clear winner: the serving bowl was clean. Fun Bus Pub Tours The chapter cut loose on March 3 rd and August 11 th, 2017, and toured the Hobart area in a basspumping, disco-light decorated renovated city bus. Each event had 25+ participants comprising staff members, undergraduate, masters, and PhD students. A great time was had, and the event helped to form new bonds between the postgraduate and undergraduate student groups. Honours Students Welcome BBQ Each year the chapter welcomes the new batch of honours students to the department with an Australian tradition: BBQ and beer. As always, this event was a success and widely appreciated. Economic Geology Masters Short-course Icebreaker and BBQ Each year the chapter organises an icebreaker evening and mid-course BBQ for visiting Masters of Economic Geology students. This year, 25+ students participated during the week of June 22 nd. The BBQs and Icebreaker offer a warm welcome and provide a relaxed environment for CODES students to network with the industry geologists. Figure 4. The SEG student chapter organised and successfully fed over 25 visiting Masters of Economic Geology students at a BBQ in June.

Movie Nights and membership drive The chapter organised two geology-themed movie nights that also involved a membership drive aimed at undergraduates, an underrepresented demographic in our chapter. The events were a great success, adding 10 new undergraduate chapter members. Movie and membership nights were very popular with both undergraduate and postgraduate student members. June 1, 2017 Dante s Peak July 20, 2017 The Core Figure 5. Undergraduate and postgraduate students enjoyed the finer geologic details of The Core at one of our chapter s movie and membership nights. AusIMM Students Meet Industry Night 17 March, 2017, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia The SEG student chapter sponsored Ayesha Ahmed, Jing Chen, and Joseph Knight to attend the AusIMM students meet industry night. There, they had the opportunity to interact with undergraduate students as well as mining industry representatives from Australia.

Figure 6. Joseph Knight (PhD candidate) and Marcus Bischoff (undergraduate student) discuss the importance of soil geochemistry in wine and beer flavour at the 2017 AusIMM students meet industry night. Field Trips Myanmar A high point of the professional development program is invariably the annual field trip, which in November 2016 was to Myanmar, where the group was afforded rare opportunities to view areas of the country that were off limits to geologists until recently. Highlights of the trip included visits to many mine sites. These represented a diverse set of deposit styles and commodities, ranging from shear-hosted Au, epithermal Au, and skarn Au (Pb-Cu), through to primary and secondary ruby and sapphire, high-sulfidation epithermal Cu and orogenic/intrusion-related Cu-Ag-Au. The 12-day excursion also covered features related to regional tectonics, taking in studies of the Sagaing Ridge, a surficial expression of the major Sagaing Fault system, and the Palaeozoic stratigraphy of the western Sibumasu terrane. The field trip was led by Professor Khin Zaw, together with Joseph Knight and Jing Chen from the SEG Student Chapter. Financial support was provided by CODES, First Quantum Minerals, Newcrest Mining, Rio Tinto, Savitar Exploration and the SEG. In addition to CODES students, the group included eight participants from four mining companies, and students from as far afield as Germany and Hong Kong. Overall, it was a highly rewarding trip that not only exposed the participants to new and intriguing geological features, but also provided them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience an enchanting country that is relatively poor, but so abundantly rich in history, culture and hospitality. A detailed report on the trip, along with use of Wallace funding, was submitted to the SEG following the trip in 2016.

Weldborough, Tasmania On March 18, 2017 a number of SEG student members drove to Weldborough, Tasmania to hunt for sapphires. It was a success! Figure 9. SEG student members Josh Phillips and Yi Sun sieving for sapphires. Figure 10. SEG student members Marcus Bischoff and Alex Cherry picking sapphires.
