2 Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter University of Portsmouth Annual Report UOP SEG 2016/17 Annual Report Executive Summary 2016/17 Executive Committee President William Smith Secretary Gemma Lawson Treasurer Connor Allen Vice President Jane Kelsey Faculty Adviser Dr. James Darling Industry Advisor Dr. Bob Foster The UOP SEG Student Chapter 2016/17 can celebrate a successful, first-accredited year, where the hard work of the committee have created the foundations for what we hope will be a lasting, achieving society. Our first achievement was gaining 130 sign-ups from all years and courses across the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Portsmouth, highlighting that the chapter was well-received and filling a niche amongst students. We have hosted six evening seminars from a mix for speakers as listed below. This list incorporates recent undergraduates of the University of Portsmouth pursuing a career in the mining industry through to retired mining geologists with many years experience in the industry. These talks were regularly attended by members of the chapter from all academic levels, keen to learn more about economic geology. Moreover, we have hosted and participated in events, where we have enjoyed meeting like-minded students from around the UK, whilst learning from, and networking, with many different professionals in the mining industry. Our primary achievement was gaining the funding to host the first UOP SEG Fieldtrip to Ireland, which we hope will be the first of many fieldtrips hosted by the chapter. The SEG AGM took place on the 26 th May 2017 at 14:00-15:00 where the newlyelected committee is listed the bottom of this document. Talks & Seminars: 12/10/ Dr. Bob Foster (Former CEO of Stratex, Current President of the SEG): The life cycle of an Economic Geologist- Science, challenges, options and fun. 08/11/ Prof. Anthony Naldrett: From the Mantle to the Bank: The Life of a Magmatic Sulphide Deposit. 18/11/ Shaun Johnson (Aggregate Industries): Life after University; Aggregate Mining and much more.

3 17/01/ Graham Greenway & Rodrigo Neto (Lundin Mining): Exploration, Exploitation and everything in between. 28/02/ Lucy Crane (Atlus Strategies): Exploration Geology; From Discovery to Mine Development. 14/03/ Andrew Reynolds (Nordgold): Gold Mining 101. Events: 09/11// Women in Mining Education Event: An annual education event where a panel of keynote speakers share their insights and experiences into the day-to-day life within the mining industry. We are proud to have many enthusiastic female members of the chapter at Portsmouth, who had a great time learning and networking. 17/11/ Petex 2016: Due to high demand to attend the event form SEG members, we attended the largest sub-surfaced E&P conference and exhibition in the UK. This was a great opportunity for all undergraduate years to get a taste for the atmosphere at conferences, to learn and to network. 18/01/ Postgraduate Initiative: An SEG-hosted Portsmouth event, where coordinators from each of the postgraduate courses offered at Portsmouth, provided at a talk on the programme, assessments and employability prospects. With postgraduate study becoming a requirement for aspiring economic geologists, we thought this would be a highly useful event. It attracted a large audience that are now considering further study. 22/02/ Students into Mining: An annual mining conference hosted at Imperial RSM. Attendees of the Portsmouth Chapter had a great time meeting like-minded students and networking with the keynote speakers. 24/03/ SEG Sundownder: Newly formed SEG annual meeting, firstly hosted at Bristol and addressed by Laurence Robb. Great opportunity for the UK SEG chapters to get together and outline the good work going on at individual universities and to discuss potential collaborations going forward. 13/05/ /05/2017 Hungary SEG Field Trip with the University of Miskolc: 5-day SEG sampling fieldtrip in NE Hungary and Slovakia. The first day entailed a range of lectures about efficient sampling and the statistical analysis of effective sampling. The second day was a field trip around the Tokaj Mountains in Telkibanya, to view the old mining district and carry out mine sketching and soil sampling. The third day we travelled to Smolnik where we carried out a range of soil and water acidity tests as well as dissolved oxygen analyses and in situ XRF. The fourth day we travelled to the Perlite Mine at Palhaza. Here we sampled different varieties of Perlite which was then assessed in the laboratory on site. Field Trip Ireland. Summary: The UOP SEG Student Chapter enjoyed their first academic field trip to the Republic and Northern Ireland (16/02 19/02). 12 members travelled to Dublin, Derry and Belfast to learn about the world-class Pb-Zn mineralisation at Boliden Tara and the exploitation of this deposit. Participants also learnt about the mining heritage of Ireland through the Arigna Mining Experience and the Natural History Museum in Belfast. Furthermore the members enjoyed the Giants Causeway a must-see for any geologist journeying to Ireland. A For more information on this fieldtrip, please see the field trip report. Objectives; To visit a world-class Pb-Zn deposit to learn about the mining and processing procedures adopted.

4 To learn about the mining heritage of Ireland. To visit the world heritage site; the Giants Causeway, to learn about the geology of this famous locality. Sponsors: The Society of Economic Geologists provided most the funding for the trip. MinSouth (Institution of Mining and Metallurgy) provided the remainder of the funds. UOP SEG is very grateful for these sponsors, allowing for hugely subsidised participant fees. SEG Annual General Meeting (AGM). Summary: The UOP SEG Student Chapter hosted the AGM on Friday the 26th of May (2017), at 14:00-14:45. Will Smith (president) gave a brief presentation/report on what was achieved this year, followed by future aims and objectives of the committee. A funding presentation/report was then given by Connor Allen (Treasurer), which looked at the expenses for this year, and funding we received; he also discussed future plans for funding opportunities and the way in which those funds may be used. This academic year we had 120 students interested in the SEG, with ~50 paid members, which was a huge success. We hope that in this next academic year we continue to grow, with potentially over 50 paid members, spanning through a range of years (undergraduate-postgraduate). Through this we hope to continue boosting economic geology at UOP and provide valuable insight into economic geology and the industry to our students. The new SEG Student Committee for was then selected through diplomatic vote of the members, after applications for the positions where received and reviewed. The names of the new committee follow below in section 2017/18 Executive Committee. Future Aims & Objectives: To continue to grow economic geology at Portsmouth through lectures and collaboration with the SEG. To host the 2018 SEG sundowner at Portsmouth, where are UK chapters can come to present their years work and to push further collaboration To run a joint field programme to learn about the geology and mining heritage of Portugal. Here we would visit a variety of different mining localities in W-Sn and Au mineralisation. To run a fieldtrip visiting different aggregate quarries in SW England as part of the Alumni Scheme. Former students now work with Aggregate Industries, who could accomdate a mining fieldtrip.
