Our chapter contributed offering a 3-days-long course of Uses of CorelDRAW for geological purposes. The short course was taught by our member Natanael Cezario and covered the following topics: CorelDRAW s interface, basic tools, organization of files for vectorization, tools used for drawing and vectorizing, concepts to plan and vectorize an image, vectorization exercise, creation of a stratigraphic column exercise, creation and implementation of legend and textures, basic concepts in creating a block diagram, ways to export and save a project. Once again we took 15 minutes to introduce the Society of Economic Geologists and explain the benefits of being part of the Student Chapter, encouraging the affiliation of new members to the Student Chapter. Figure 6: The members Renan, Cristiano and Betina talking about the Society of Economic Geologists and inviting the student to affiliate to the Student Chapter during the XXX SEDEGEO. i) 1 st SISBRAMME: The SEG UFRGS SC help to organize, along with SME UFRGS Chapter (Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration) and ISEE Brazil Student Chapter (International Society of Explosives Engineers), the first South Brazilian Symposium for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SISBRAMME), on June 8 th 9 th. The event took place at the facilities of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and brought together 200 participants, including professionals and students from the host and other universities. The first day included lectures by qualified professionals in the mining and metallurgic industry and presentations developed by undergraduate, master s and PhD students. Six members of the SEG UFRGS Student Chapter presented on their research. Presentations covered such themes as characterization of mineral deposits from Brazil, metallogeny, and improving of technologies for the mining industry. The second day counted with the fourth edition of the Blasting Day and six short courses: Gemology, Programming in Geostatistics, Geomechanics Applied to Underground Mines,

9 Mineralogical and Textural Characteristics of Classic Ores, Mineral Research, Mining and Environment: Granting and Inspection by DNPM (National Department of Mineral Production), Hydrometallurgy and Environment. By promoting the symposium, the SEG UFRGS Student Chapter achieved its goal of encouraging interaction between students and professionals. Figure 7: (A) Organizing committee, composed by members of the SEG UFRGS SC, SME UFRGS Chapter and ISEE Brazil SC; (B) Votorantim Metals geologist Samuel Boucas do Lago talking about the Caçapava Polymetallic Project: Pb-Zn-Cu. j) Expedition ADIMB to the Carajás Mineral Province: From July, 9 th 16 th, two of our members took part in the Expedition to the Carajás Mineral Province. Promoted by ADIMB (Agency for Technological Development of Brazilian Mineral Industry), the expedition gathered 18 students from 9 Brazilian SEG Student Chapters. Localized in the central-eastern portion of the state of Pará, the Serra dos Carajás region is considered the largest mining district in Brazil and one of the most important in the world. Besides having giant iron deposits, the region has important deposits of Au, Cu, Ag, Mn, Ni, REE and occurrences of Cr, Pt and Pd. The group was accompanied by professors Marcondes Costa (Federal University of Pará) and Caetano Juliani (University of Sao Paulo) and by ADIMB s geologist Gustavo Mello. The students also had the technical support from Vale s exploration geologist Fernando Matos, who has 32 years of experience in the area. In the first day in the Carajás Province, Fernando exposed to the students a state of the art of the knowledge about Carajás, covering aspects such as tectonic compartmentalization, geological evolution, metallogenetic epochs, mineralization models, geology of the deposits and ore typologies. The group visited the Salobo Cu-Au mine, the giant Fe project S11D, the oldest Fe mine in the region N4 and the Mn mine of Azul, all operated by Vale. The group also visited the Cu-Au Antas Norte mine, operated by the junior Avanco Cooper, the old Au garimpo in Serra Verde, and Vale s core sheds. The group had the opportunity to know Carajás exactly in the month when the Province celebrates in 2017 the 50 years of the discovery of iron deposits in the region. The expedition was fully supported by ADIMB, so the participants had no costs with transportation, accommodation and food.

10 Figure 8: (A) SEG UFRGS Student Chapter members Betina and Renan visiting the world s largest iron project S11D; (B) the group visiting the Cu-Au mine of Salobo, the largest Vale s Cu mine. k) Short Course Geographic Information System: The SEG UFRGS SC promoted the short course Geographic Information System occurred on August, 10 th 11 th. The course was taught by our member André Luis Araújo and took 16-hour-long, helded in the facilities of the UFRGS. All the 9 vacancies were filled with chapter members, who used the software QGis during the course. The topics covered were: Basic concepts on creating a GIS project, management of raster and vector objects, layers proprieties and management, editing, using attribute table, print compositor. Also, a practical exercise focusing on create a thematic map of the Rio Grande do Sul State (RS) using open source cartographic basis, including: Mining titles (retrieved from SIGMINE-DNPM website), hydrography (retrieved from Environmental Secretary of RS) and municipalities (retrieved from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics website IBGE). The course had no costs for the participants. Figure 9: SEG UFRGS SC members during the GIS short course.

11 l) Field Trip 2017: The SEG UFRGS Field Trip 2017 Expedition to the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, occurred on September, 12 th -19 th and took 10 of our members to know the historically important mining district of Quadrilátero Ferrífero in the state of Minas Gerais Brazil. The group performed technical visits to Fe mines of Mutuca and Capao Xavier, operated by Vale, and the currently deactivated Capanema mine; Au mines Lamego and Córrego do Sítio, operated by AngloGold Ashanti, were also visited. Moreover, the members visited two old Au garimpos, exploited in the colonial era, during the gold cycle which brought the first impulse of advancement and settlement to the region. The group also performed a profile along the western limb of the Moeda Syncline, one of the structures generated during the Transamazonian Orogeny. Along this profile we walked from the basal sediments of the Minas Supergroup, which register the opening of the basin, through the fluvial sediments and end up at the marine sediments, accompanying the evolution of the sedimentary basin. Afterwards, the group visited old dolomite and komatiite quarries, and the dam of Fundao which collapsed in 2015 in a huge disaster. Two activities of the field trip, namely the lectures given by professors Rosaline Silva and Carlos Alberto Rosière from the Federal University of Minas Gerais were kindly organized by the UFMG SEG Student Chapter. We also had the engagement of Professor Maximiliano Souza Martins, who invited us to spend a day under his guidance. Our academic advisor, Professor José Carlos Frantz participated in the last three days of the field trip. The field trip was mostly supported by the Stewart Wallace Fund Grant. We also received support from Core Case company. Besides, the Student Chapter members contributed with BRL each. The rest of the expenditures were covered by the SEG UFRGS SC funds, obtained through several money raising activities along the year. The students had no costs with transportation and accommodation.
