2 THE JOY OF GIVING As an organisation, Cumbria Community Foundation has shown how much they believe in the work we do by financially supporting our projects over a period of 15 years and one of the reasons we are still here today. Wigton Youth Station Chairman s Report This year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Cumbria Community Foundation. In that time we have distributed over 21m in grants, won national awards for fundraising and grant making as well as building permanent grant making funds in excess of 11.5m. It is an honour and a privilege to Chair an organisation that makes such a difference to the lives of people in our very special county. I am delighted to report another year of growth in endowed funds and further expansion of our grant making activities. It has again been a very busy year with successful renewal of our independent Quality Accreditation and the development of a new business plan. The business plan has been driven by the challenge in our Quality Accreditation report to raise our game in terms of seeking to further expand the work of the Foundation to new donors. Our Barrow Community Trust Committee continue to work hard overseeing our grant making in the Borough of Barrow in Furness as well as run the ever popular Annual Ball. Highlights of the year have included 700K in donations to create new long term funds, mainly supported by the Government s Community First programme. The match funding scheme comes to an end in December 2014 and we will strive to maximise the opportunities to create new long term funds through this route. The Winter Warmth Appeal more than doubled its fundraising total over the previous year with 105K raised. More than 1,000 older people were able to receive vital financial assistance through grant awards made in partnership with local Age UK and other organisations. 3 Rivers Ride An impressive 1,261 cyclists signed up to take part in the Jennings Rivers Ride 2014 and a fine May Bank Holiday weekend added a shine to the challenge. The event had to be postponed from September 2013 due to torrential rain. Therefore seeing happy, smiley and dry riders made the day. A fourth route - the Foundation Flyer - offered a new distance of 55 miles for riders, alongside a new Family Fun route, as well as the Community Circuit at 38 miles and the Big Day Out which is 75 miles from Keswick to the Irish Sea and back. It was great to see the increased number of teams from companies across Cumbria pulling together, bonding and raising thousands of pounds in the process. 180 teams took part, up from 80 last time. The Low Level Waste Repository raised the most money from a company. NSG team individual fundraiser was Ian Clements who raised 1,431 and saw a caricature of his face on the beer clips of Jenning s new brew Blazing Saddles. 48 people raised 125 and received a yellow cycling jersey, nine people raised 250 and were given a purple hooded top and four keen fundraisers raised 500 to land a spotty cycling jersey. The money raised contributes to the Foundation Grants fund which supports local grassroots groups. 4 Winter Warmth Appeal THE JOY OF GIVING Andy and his team have an excellent record in targeting funds to where it makes most difference. I hope the success of the Foundation s first fifteen years will inspire a new generation of philanthropists to enrich our very special county. Claire Hensman, Lord-Lieutenant Our annual Winter Warmth Appeal to keep older people safe and warm raised a fantastic 105,000 - double last year s total. We are delighted to have been able to distribute grants to benefit over 1,000 people through our partners at Age UK, DaCE and Barrow CAB. Sonia Mangan, Director of Age UK South Lakeland, said: We know that more and more people are struggling financially and these grants have enabled us to work with people on a very practical solution - offering a small grant towards the cost of heating when it is most needed. A quarter of the money came from a brave band of 170 fundraisers who took part in The Big Sleep - a night under the stars in February on a hill behind the Low Wood Bay Hotel in Windermere. The youngest sleeper was seven, the oldest was 70. Diana Matthews, the High Sheriff at the time, slept on an army camp bed in a sleeping bag with just an umbrella and a furry hat to stave off the cold wind and drizzle. The Winter Warmth Fund literally saves lives. 70 year old Anne received a grant this year, she said: When you ve got conditions like I have with my breathing, you can t get out. 6 Corporate Funds For busy business people it can be difficult to find the time and expertise to manage corporate giving effectively. Knowing that your money is going to the right place, and dealing with the day-to-day administration can be daunting. There are a number of benefits of setting up a fund: You get a personal relationship: we help you to find the right options that suit your charitable interests and resources. Your gift will be effective and benefit the causes you want to help because of our knowledge of community needs and experience in funding local groups. You can get involved with groups you support, meet like-minded people among our donors, and gain publicity about your giving if you wish. You get peace of mind from our tried-and tested systems for awarding funds and reporting on results. You avoid the legal and administrative expense of administering a separate charitable trust or making your own donations to groups. Your gift can be tax efficient. Roger Smith meeting Northbank FC Carlisle U12 girls team who received a grant of 2,000 Carlisle based industrial supplies company Thomas Graham and Sons established a long term fund in 2008, which is now worth 150,000. Roger Smith, Managing Director said: As a Cumbrian business we wanted to support local community activities but were getting a lot of requests for help. We set up a fund which targets grants to young people and sport in the Carlisle area. We are confident that our money is going to the best projects. Working with the Foundation means we can support the causes that we care about without the hassle. The company has also been able to secure match funding from the Community First endowment challenge to help build their fund Giving through the Foundation is designed to be as simple as possible. 7 Family Fund Donors Charles and Margaret Woodhouse created the Quarry Hill Fund in Charles is a former partner in London law firm Farrer & Co where he helped form many charities, including Essex Community Foundation. He has been a trustee of many grant making charities over the past 35 years, including the Mulberry Trust. He is a passionate advocate for the role of sport in developing the potential and confidence of young people. He and Margaret made their home in Cumbria in 2001 and enjoy an active retirement with nine grandchildren, three of whom live close by. Their Fund s focus is support for young people and sport and recreation in the North Allerdale area. This is their home patch and an area identified as having limited opportunities for support from other sources. Recent grant awards have included support for Wigton Youth Station, Silloth Rugby Union Club, Carlisle Wheelchair Basketball Club, Barrow House Youth Centre (Derwentwater) and Silloth Ladies Netball Club. The Fund has recently provided start-up funding for Sports Leaders UK Energy Clubs at five north and west Cumbria primary schools. Charles said: We re happy to share the story of our fund to encourage more people to create their own funds. We have confidence in the team at the Community Foundation and value their expertise. We appreciate the benefits of them looking after all the paper work including investment management and project sourcing and monitoring. Our daughter Philippa is actively involved as a volunteer with the Foundation. She undertakes project monitoring visits to a wide range of projects funded across the Foundation s portfolio of funds. This experience will inform her in the future as she helps us with the family Fund. 8 Creating a Fund with a Legacy Gift THE JOY OF GIVING We have established a route for young people to progress into further and higher education, when they are struggling in the mainstream and need a new beginning. Anne Diss, Director of Cowran Training What better way of marking your time on earth than by creating a permanent fund at the Foundation? Not everyone can afford to create a grant making fund at the Foundation during their life, however many people could consider doing this by making a legacy gift in their will. A Fund at the Foundation supports the issues and communities that you care most about. Making a legacy gift is also highly tax effective. Beneficiaries of wills can also choose to direct funds to charitable causes. The Cumbria Young People s Fund was established thanks to the generosity of someone who cared passionately about helping young people. He left 1.2m in his will to support groups working with young people between the ages of 14 and 22 throughout Cumbria. Cowran Training near Pennington is a working farm which offers a range of handson training and educational opportunities for school children and disadvantaged young people and adults. The charity received 7,000 from the fund to develop a special 24 week work challenge programme that provides opportunities for young people in Barrow to get involved with all aspects of running a farm from animal husbandry to growing vegetables and running the farm shop and ends with nationally recognised qualifications. Anne Diss, who runs Cowran with her husband Mike said: We have a very high percentage of young people who are not in employment, education or training in the area and so we work closely with the local authorities and job centres to provide much needed training and development opportunities. 9 NMP Community Fund If you ask a lot of the kids here they ll tell you they d be in trouble if it wasn t for this place. This place is great. It s not school. They don t shout at you and tell you not to do things. They help you. All supported projects can demonstrate success. These are quotes taken from the independent evaluation of the Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) Community Fund. NMP as owners of Sellafield Limited take their responsibilities to the local community seriously. The NMP Community Fund has for five years invested in the Life Chances and Aspirations of the people of West Cumbria, giving over 2.2m in a combination of small grassroots grants, medium sized ( 25K) and large ( 100K) commissioned grants. Funded projects address key issues like literacy, numeracy, participation in schools and education, life skills, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour. The Phoenix Youth Project was awarded 87,000 over five years from the NMP Community Fund to continue to grow and develop services. The funding contributed towards Friday night provision in Cleator Moor, the opening of a new youth centre and to establish youth provision in Frizington and Moor Row, all of which have been achieved. One young person who now volunteers said: I wanted to Members of the Phoenix Youth Project being presented with their Duke of Edinburgh and Youth Achievement Awards give something back, because the club really helped me. I was doing stupid things like throwing eggs at cars, just because there was nothing else to do. This place gave me something else, something better to do than being stupid and getting into trouble... I don t think I d be doing what I m doing now if it hadn t have been for the centre. We re delighted that NMP have chosen to continue their grant making relationship with the Community Foundation announcing a further 500K pa commitment to local communities in July The Joy of Giving 9

10 Neighbourhood Care lndependence Programme The Neighbourhood Care Independence programme (NCI) is a partnership of over 25 voluntary and community groups in Cumbria providing a range of services to older or vulnerable adults in the County. The services provided are varied and build upon existing assets within our communities while helping people to remain independent at home. Mr and Mrs A are in their late 80s and early 90s and were finding daily activities increasingly difficult. They have benefited from practical support with tasks such as cleaning, as well as looking at a range of equipment to enable safe use around the home. Mr A said: We are very grateful for all the help. It s made life so much easier A range of volunteer opportunities and roles are available for anyone who would like to become involved in the NCI programme. 78 year old William lives alone following the death of his wife. After attending the NCI Volunteer Information day he decided to volunteer with Carlisle Eden Mind as a Moving On Support Volunteer, offering friendship and support to a lady in her 50 s. He also volunteers with Carlisle Carers. William said: It is very rewarding, satisfying and a pleasure to help others. Often people think volunteering is about helping a charity but in fact volunteering also helps volunteers themselves. It s about helping you to get a sense of routine in your life, meeting others, and offering friendship support and encouragement to others, whilst also helping yourself. Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group are providing funding to this scheme, which also draws on the support and resources of all the organisations involved. 13 Corporate Membership 150 businesses support our work by paying an annual membership fee. Their support underpins the work we do. The small grant to give a young person the opportunity to travel abroad and broaden their horizons or the large multi-year grant to services helping people overcome difficulties such as debt, substance abuse and mental health problems. These are some of the issues that can affect you, your employees and indeed any of us as we go through life. Our members come from all over the county, from small local companies to multi-nationals. They all want to support us and lend their weight to the work we do in helping people and communities. Our members range from architects, farmers, auctioneers to specialist engineers and just about everything in between. They all want to be part of what we do and show their commitment to the people of Cumbria. We promote new members through social media and in our newsletters. Members are listed in the annual review and on our website. Challenge members, who pay a higher fee, get separate listings, a reduction on a table at our annual celebration dinner and an opportunity to attend an exclusive event every year. Members slept under the stars for the Big Sleep, raising funds for our Winter Warmth Appeal. They ve ridden their bikes for the Rivers Ride to raise money for grant making. They ve also sponsored events, which can be great publicity for them and a boost for us. As a membership organisation, the Foundation ensures it is accountable to our area s diverse communities. 17 Grant Making Funds managed by CCF Alston Moor Community Fund makes grants for charitable purposes for the benefit of Alston. 1 grant, 500 AMW Environment Fund makes grants to support actions contributing to tackling global environmental issues. 1 grant, 900 Aspatria Community Asset Fund makes grants for charitable purposes for the benefit of Aspatria and surrounding district, prioritising older adults, people with mental health needs and people with disabilities. 2 grants, 11,563 Barrow Community Trust makes grants for charitable purposes for the benefit of the people of the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. 11 grants, 8,092 BNFL Live the Dream Fund makes grants to young people in West Cumbria to enable access to study or vocational training. 8 grants, 5,588 Castle Green Grassroots Grants makes grants for charitable activities for local communities in Kendal and immediate district. 2 grants, 1,296 CN Fund is donor advised. It makes grants to projects reflecting the interests of the CN group companies. 2 grants, 3,000 Coalfields Community Grants Level 1 makes grants to groups in former mining areas around Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven. 8 grants, 24,181 Comic Relief aims to empower local people enabling them to create lasting change in their communities. Priority is given to small, locally based groups in areas of disadvantage. 6 grants, 19,200 Community Health and Wellbeing Fund for Eden and East Allerdale received funding through the NHS and Cumbria County Council for projects to improve health and reduce health inequalities. 20 grants, 148,215 THE JOY OF GIVING CCF over 15 years has become the County s go to organisation for information about what is required in Cumbria to support all our communities.
