TRUSTEE CANDIDATE INFORMATION PACK 1
ABOUT 10:10 CLIMATE ACTION 10:10 Climate Action is a charity that brings people together to do positive, practical things that help tackle climate change. It was born in the summer of 2009, when the team behind the climate change film The Age of Stupid were asked after every screening what can I do to help?. Our first campaign united 100,000+ people and organisations around a 10% carbon cut in 2010, and this positive, can-do spirit has animated everything we ve done since. We re a small, nimble team, but we ve got a big mission, and we re bright and bold in everything we do. We know we re just one part of a bigger movement, but that our role is essential. We keep upbeat, and we maintain a strong focus on the positive. We never run a campaign about a problem unless we can present a solution, and sometimes we have to innovate to come up with that solution ourselves. We know climate change is deadly serious, we also know fighting it doesn t have to be. 10:10 are leaders in their field, making the global issue of climate change relevant to a wide public here in the UK. They punch well above their weight, driving citizen-led change forward. And that s what we need. We need change to happen quicker, deeper and more powerfully. 10:10 can help get us there. DAVID BLOOD co-founder, Generation Investment Management OUR VISION A world free from the threat of climate change. OUR MISSION We want to see a low carbon Britain that has been built by, and belongs to, everybody. We help people in the UK tackle climate change by showcasing exciting opportunities to take part and creating new ones. Where barriers to people getting involved exist, we help people to challenge these. Our projects cut carbon, but because we work on the cultural as well as technical level, it s crucial that they also get people talking about cutting carbon too. This makes them infectious, meaning our work is always about more than just a solar panel here or an LED there, but whole communities shifting their approach. 2
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE We need to tackle climate change, and we need to move fast. The sheer scale of action needed means it will touch everyone s lives. If we re going to move at the speed required - and if we re going to ensure the new world we build is a fair one - people and communities have to be involved. Politicians, Inclusivity Positivity Trust and respect Integrity corporations and other established institutions will have to play a key role too, but they will only move fast enough once they know their constituents and customers are on board. The climate movement must be a mass movement, or it simply won t achieve its aims. We need to create the same sort of tipping point for climate Creativity Caring and kindness Shared ambition action - involve enough people to create a new norm when it comes to cutting carbon, and unlock sweeping societal and political action at every level. We know around 60% of Brits are willing to greatly reduce their energy use to tackle climate change - it s our job to help them to do that. OUR VALUES AND CULTURE As an organisation, we re committed to our culture. Organisational culture away days keep our values and principles alive and we work together to keep our team as supported, empowered and cared for as possible. We re run by a team of directors rather than one single CEO, and we re committed to reducing hierarchy wherever possible. We ask our team and our trustees to operate according to our values. 3
OUR WORK In line with our mission statement, 10:10 s programme of work breaks into three different streams: Pathfinding: Creating new opportunities for participation. Dambusting: Challenging barriers to public participation where they exist. Energising: Showcasing exciting opportunities for mass participation. Over the next three years, projects in each of these work streams will help more people than ever play their part in the transition to a low carbon future. We ll work to ensure that a range of appealing, accessible and impactful actions on climate change exist. LIVE PROJECTS Blown Away 1010uk.org/blownaway Onshore wind is our cheapest new Celebrate onshore wind s electricity source yet communities popularity with the public; are unable to develop projects build a political constituency of thanks to a de facto ban, driven support; lobby the government by the perception that the to bring back wind and enable technology is unpopular. communities to build their own projects. Lighten Up lightenup.1010uk.org Communities able to develop their own onshore wind projects. One community scale turbine can avoid up to 65,000 tonnes of carbon over its lifetime. Huge cost and carbon savings are available to local councils by switching street lights to LEDs; only around one in five have done so. Raise awareness of benefits of LED switching; mobilise supporters to find out what their council is doing about LED street lights; celebrate success and early adopters; accelerate uptake. The acceleration of local authority rollout of LED street lighting, saving up to 90,000 tonnes of carbon annually. 4
Energy Local, Wales & London 1010uk.org/energylocal Renewable energy projects are unable to realise their full value at the local level - for generators or neighbouring communities. Roll out our pilot, using smart tech to match local electricity use to local generation - driving down bills and boosting incomes for wind, hydro and solar projects. Cheaper bills for more communities, including urban. Greater income for local renewables. Proof of concept. Carbon Crush 1010uk.org/carboncrush The newly aware and motivated around climate action need simple and relatable carbon cutting actions. Grow 1010uk.org/trees Communities across the UK are at increased risk of flooding due to climate change; the UK is failing to meet its tree planting targets. Provide accessible and appealing information on effective climate solutions to those who now know they need to do something but aren t sure what. Work with flood-risk communities to plant trees as flood defences; involve the mass public in crowdfunding for trees; use adaptation projects to engage the public with mitigation. Our audiences commit to and deliver long term personal action on climate change. Community tree planting schemes delivered to mitigate flooding. Climate adaptation and mitigation projects reach and engage new audiences. Rethinking Parks Pipeline Project Decarbonising heat in cities is difficult, and some of the most promising technologies are unknown to the public. Public green spaces are under threat from shrinking local authority budgets. Excite the public about heat pump technologies and urban heat, and create a sustainable funding source for green spaces, by crowdfunding ground source heat pump projects in public parks. Delivery of one flagship project in London Fields, development and popularisation of model. 5
