4 Entrepreneurial Column The Market Research The market research complements the business plan, and it is helpful just as much in all the development phases of the business. The market research is also used in the elaboration of the marketing strategy of a business. A complete market research allows the entrepreneurs to have a good knowledge of their clientele and their competitors. It also allows them to present their products and their services in such a way as to reach their target market. Also, thanks to the market research, the entrepreneur has access to data which allow him to make enlighten decisions and to place his business in the best possible position to succeed. Several elements must be taken into account in the completion of a market research. Here are some of them: 1. Product: in this section, there is a need to evaluate the needs and services required by the target clientele, and this, in relation to what is being offered by the competitors. A complete description of the service or product (function, appearance, etc.), is essential ; 2. Market: the point here is to assess in which market the product should be launched, based on geographical, socio-demographic, behavioral criterions, etc. Once this is determined, these criterions will allow the entrepreneur to decide on the manner his product will be introduced on the market; 3. Price: the price of the product or service must be set by taking into account numerous factors, which include the capacity for the target clientele to pay, the price fixed by the other competitors for the same product, etc.; 4. Advertising: the entrepreneur will be expected to determine how he will market his product or his service to his clientele; 5. Competitive trading: in this case, it will be important to list the main competitors of the business, and to analyze them according to certain criterions : the number of years in business, the size of the business, the services offered and the specialty (if applicable), etc. Certain firms specialize in carrying out this type of study, but the disadvantage of this option is that it is costly. In addition to representing a large saving of money, the fact for an entrepreneur to make his own market research allows him to have a better knowledge of his clientele. Several sources of background information are available to those who decide to carry out their own market research, either under written form or electronic version. Here is a list of some of them: Community Profiles (Statistics Canada); Survey of Household Spending; Registraire des entreprises du Québec; Canada Business. In short, a market research is a tool that is indispensable to the development of any business, and it is an essential investment for any business which is determined to succeed. 4
