1 NOVEMBER 7, 2014 MYSTIC SEAPORT HOLIDAY SALE Employees, volunteers, their friends and family are invited to shop till you drop on Thursday November 20 th. There are over 20 vendors signed up for what should be a fun evening of holiday shopping! This year the Galley Restaurant will be transformed into a holiday craft fair! There will be something for everyone! Wine and cheese will be offered as well as food for purchase from the Galley. Shoppers can enter through the membership gate at the front entrance. Sale starts at 4:30. Hope to see you there! MYSTIC SEAPORT HOLIDAY PARTY Mystic Seaport employees and their guests are invited to the annual Holiday Party in the VRC on Thursday December 11 at 5 pm. Employees are asked to bring a dish and BYOB. Dessert will be provided. Don t forget to break out your holiday best for the Most Festive Outfit. There will be prizes and raffles. Looking forward to seeing everyone and celebrate this time of year! ALONG THE WATEFRONT Please join me in welcoming back schooners AMISTAD and MYSTIC WHALER! AMISTAD is docked at the Bartram Dock at Lighthouse Point. They will be using the White Boat Shop as a workshop. MYSTIC WHALER is docked at Hobie s Dock near the Shipyard. Boat boats will be here through the spring. They will not be open to the public. L.A. DUNTON is currently at Chubb s Wharf to have her ballast and rig removed. She will be hauled out in the middle of next week and will be back in the water at her usual dock in early December. JOSEPH CONRAD will be moving to Chubb s Wharf in the middle of November while work is done on her dock. She will be back to her usual location by the time the Museum reopens after the winter closure. -Shannon McKenzie MELVILLE, MOBY-DICK, AND THE MORGAN On Wednesday, November 12 at 4:00 pm, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards will lead a program for teachers entitled Melville, Moby-Dick, and the Morgan. Staff are encouraged to join online! If you are interested, go to: at 4:00 pm for the live program. 2 FAREWELL CELEBRATION FOR MARELDA This year the Interpretation Department Annual Pot-Luck Get-Together will also include a farewell and best wishes celebration for Marelda Hart. Mystic Seaport staff and volunteers who worked with Marelda over the years are invited to join us between 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, November 16 in the YTB. If you are not a current member of the Interpretation Department please RSVP to Liz Cole at elizabeth.cole@mysticseaport.org or ext and please bring your favorite dish/beverage to share. Thanks to grant from Connecticut Humanities and a collaboration with Dr. Jason Mancini from the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, Mystic Seaport has been able to generate new resources for the Mystic Seaport for Educators website. The new offerings are related to the recently uncovered histories of Connecticut s Native American mariners. Follow the links below to navigate through story maps, voyage maps, a lecture and more! 3 MALLORY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Foreign Museum Professional Traveling to Mystic Seaport in 2015 Program Year 2015: The Mallory Exchange Fellowship will be used in 2015 to sponsor a colleague from a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution for research and study purposes at Mystic Seaport. Proposals should be sponsored by a Mystic Seaport employee. Background: The Mallory Endowment was established in 1993 by Wade and Angela Thompson to honor Clifford and Pauline Mallory for their many years of service to Mystic Seaport. The stated purpose of the fund is...to create an international exchange program between the Seaport and other institutions... The intent is that one year an international scholar, in any discipline related to Mystic Seaport s mission, will come to the Museum for study and research purposes; in alternate years, a Mystic Seaport staff member will visit a foreign museum for study and research purposes. A number of staff exchanges have taken place since the inception of the fund, with the first exchange taking place with Hobson Wharf, Maritime Museum of Auckland, New Zealand, in honor of Mrs. Mallory s native country. Proposal Guidelines: The Proposal should be submitted by a Mystic Seaport staff member sponsoring a colleague from a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational institution for research and study purposes at Mystic Seaport. The submitter of the successful proposal(s) will have the general responsibilities of any project Manager-- to ensure that funds are spent according to the approved budget, and to prepare a 1-2 page narrative project report at the conclusion of the project, which the Advancement Office may forward to the donor. Funds are available to fund one or more projects (total funding for the Fellowship Program not to exceed $8,500). Each proposal must contain: - Project Title - Title Page including name and signature of staff member, department director, and vice president sponsoring the proposal. Proposals from DDs or VPs must be signed by Steve White or Susan Funk. - Project Abstract (1-2 page maximum) including goals and intended outcomes of the project, description of the resources to be researched, and names of colleagues for consultation. - A letter of support from the foreign institution. - Project Budget indicating proposed budget period and detailed breakdown of expenses not to exceed $8,500 per project. - Proposed Exchange timeframe and schedule. - Resume of the proposed visiting Museum professional participant. Due date is Friday, December 5, Proposals should be submitted to Jeanne Gade, Director of HR, for transmittal to Mallory Fellowship Selection Committee for review. Late submissions will not be accepted. Proposal Evaluation and Selection: Proposals will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on a number of different criteria, particularly the relationship of proposed activities to the advancement of Mystic Seaport s mission and strategic initiatives. The Selection Committee consists of 5 staff members, including past Mallory Fellowship

4 recipients. The top 3 proposals may be shared with the donors for their involvement and input prior to making the final selection. Selections will be announced by early January Susan Funk UPDATE ON SABINO SABINO will be hauled out and put into the Main Shop of the Henry B. dupont Preservation Shipyard in December for an extensive restoration. She will not be operational for the 2015 season, but is expected to resume operations in The planned work includes replacement of some of the last original wood making up her skeletal structure in the aft area of the hull including her shaft log (large timber through which her propeller shaft passes) and frames in the surrounding area. Her engine, boiler and freshwater tank must be removed in advance of the replacement of her keel bolts and work on her keelson. In addition to the boiler, her stack and breech (transition for exhaust gases between firebox and stack) will be removed, thoroughly inspected and repaired as necessary. This will also be an opportunity to work on her shaft and propeller and complete a myriad of other tasks including work on her cabin and decks. We look forward to her resuming operations in 2016, her 108 th year. -Shannon McKenzie MYSTIC SEAPORT BOOK CLUB Book Club will meet at 5 p.m. Thurs. 5 PHYLLIS AND PETER LITTLEFIELD Many thanks to Phyllis and Peter Littlefield for their help in securing pumpkins (and lots of them!) for this year s Trick or Treat event. The Littlefields proactively reached out to Ford s Lobster to request a pumpkin donation and were able to facilitate this generous donation. Looking for a companion who might enjoy spending the day with a very large, gentle, couch potato most Tuesday-Fridays from 8-4:30 p.m. with a walk around noon. All (and many) accessories provided. No food or vet costs. Dog is very mellow and friendly, good with kids, large dogs and cats. Full disclosure: Dog does not abide small dogs, steep uncarpeted stairs, Gangster Rap or bananas. Also sheds copiously. Looking for a somewhat unusual, mutually beneficial arrangement. Please call if interested.
