As we celebrate Presidents Day Weekend, 2012, please join us in remembering and having some fun with three American presidents and the subs named for them: James Madison, James Monroe, and Andrew Jackson. Play submarine Sudoku, wind your way through maddening mazes, color in presidential portraits, and more. And don t forget to check out Presidential Pursuits at the end of this booklet: find three special objects in the Museum and be entered in a drawing to win a real patch from one of the three featured subs: USS ANDREW JACKSON (SSBN-619), USS JAMES MONROE (SSBN-622), and USS JAMES MADISON (SSBN-627)! Have fun! PRESIDENTIAL AND SUBMARINE FUN FACTS! JAMES MADISON James Madison was the oldest of 12 children, but he never had any of his own. James Madison had a pet macaw, a type of parrot. James Madison was our shortest and lightest president he was five feet, four inches tall and weighed about 100 pounds. USS JAMES MADISON (SSBN-627) was the first submerged submarine to launch a POSEIDON missile, which was 34 feet long and weighed 65,000 pounds. JAMES MONROE The White House was first painted white the year James Monroe became president. James Monroe was shot in the shoulder during the Revolutionary War. The bullet stayed in his arm for the rest of his life. USS JAMES MONROE (SSBN-622) was built in just 369 days. It took shipyard workers 1,092 days almost two more years to build USS OHIO (SSBN-726). In her 26 years of service, USS JAMES MONROE completed 77 patrols and traveled over 500,000 miles with 18 commanding officers and 2,600 Sailors. ANDREW JACKSON Andrew Jackson was the first president to be born in a log cabin. Andrew Jackson was the first president to ride on a train. Andrew Jackson joined the military to fight in the Revolutionary War when he was only 13 years old. USS ANDREW JACKSON was the first submerged submarine to launch a POLARIS A3 missile, which can travel up to 2,500 nautical miles (nearly 3,000 regular miles) to reach a target about the distance from New York City to Los Angeles, California!
