2 From the THRMOA Tumuaki Tēnā koutou katoa, On behalf of the Executive for Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa (the Māori Law Society) we invite you to join us at our annual conference for 2014 at the Windermere Campus of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga. The theme of this year s conference is Māori lawyers in the 21st Century: survive and thrive individually and collectively with keynote sessions covering this kaupapa together with specific sessions on a variety of different practice areas relevant to Māori. The programme offers a total of CPD hours on topics that are both unique and relevant to Māori legal practice. This is a special opportunity for those practicing in these important areas of law to engage fully, explore new ideas and gain valuable CPD hours in the process. As a not for profit organisation, we have to acknowledge our sponsors who have made this Conference possible, in particular our Toto Weka sponsors, Chapman Tripp, Westpac and Deloitte. We also acknowledge the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, CodeBlue, Konica Minolta and EMA. We took a break from hui-ā-tau last year after hosting the inaugural World Indigenous Lawyers Conference in 2012 in Hamilton but we are confident that the standard of this year s Conference will exceed expectations and will provide great value to our members, and all others involved in these important areas of the law. This year s Conference is open to members of Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa and non-members. 6 Registration Information Conference Venue The Conference will be held at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic s Windermere Campus, Windermere Drive, Tauranga. All rooms will be signposted at the venue with the main Conference being held in H Block. A registration desk will be set up at the entry to H Block. Further details regarding parking and transport will be provided to those registered closer to the Conference date. Conference Dinner A highlight of the programme annually is the formal Conference dinner which will be held at Mills Reef Winery this year on the Saturday evening. If you wish to bring a guest to the dinner or purchase a ticket for the dinner only, tickets are $125 each. Numbers for the dinner are limited and those registered for the full Conference will take priority. Sports Challenges The programme includes the annual sports challenge between Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa and Ngā Kaitatau Māori o Aotearoa (Māori Accountants Network). The rules of the sports challenge dictate that it is open to members only, with all other Conference participants more than welcome to enjoy as spectators. Details of the sports challenge will be provided in due course. Accommodation Options Accommodation at special conference rates has been reserved for conference participants at the following hotels: Hotel on Devonport, 72 Devonport Road, Tauranga from $160 per night (+ GST) Participants are to book accommodation themselves with reference to the Conference. Bookings must be made by 1 August 2014 to secure the above rate. Space may be limited. Any additional accommodation rates will be advised via the Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa website. This rate is no longer available. Limited marae accommodation (communal) is available at Wairoa Marae (Tauranga West Rd, SH2) and Paparoa Marae (Paparoa Road, Te Puna). Linen and pillowcases will be provided but all other bedding and pillows are to be organised by participants. Membership of THRMOA and Membership Rates Membership of Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa is as of right to any person who is of Māori descent and who has a Law Degree or other legal qualification or who is studying for a Law Degree or other legal qualification or is a lecturer of law-related units of learning at any tertiary institution. Member rates apply to those who fall under the above definition but do not come within the criteria for student rates below. If you are unsure about your eligibility to be a member of THRMOA please contact our Secretary, Maia Wikaira at maia@kahuilegal.co.nz Student Rates Student rates apply to those who are currently studying for a Law Degree or other legal qualification and are not in full time employment. For students only, we offer the option to register by 1 August to lock in the benefit of the early bird rate but pay your registration fee any time before the date of the conference. We encourage students to register as 5

7 early as possible for the hui-ā-tau and through your Māori law students association. Group Discount For those organisations, law firms or other groups with 4 or more people registered for the Conference, a 10% group discount is to be taken from the total cost of registrations. A 10% discount on the applicable rate (i.e. member or non-member) shall also be available to staff of the following national community organisations: Coalition of Community Law Centres Aotearoa Māori Land Court District Offices The group discount does not apply on student rates, day rates or dinner only registrations. 6
