On behalf of the Executive Committee for Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa (THRMoA/the Māori Law Society) we invite you to join us for the 2015 annual conference at the Copthorne Hotel & Resort in Waitangi. We pay homage to the late Dr Apirana Mahuika (Ngāti Porou) with the overarching theme of this year s Conference: E Tū ki te Kei o te Waka Stand at the Stern of the Canoe, which is based on a whakataukī he gifted to the New Zealand Police (E tū ki te kei o te waka, kia pakia koe e ngā ngaru o te wā Stand at the stern of the canoe and feel the spray of the future biting at your face). Standing at the stern allows us to foresee potential obstacles amidst the waters ahead and steer our waka accordingly. In this sense, Māori lawyers working intelligently and collaboratively can build on THRMoA s mantra Mā te Ture, Mō te Iwi and lead the charge in bringing Māori legal issues to the fore, not just nationally, but globally. It is our belief that as Māori lawyers we must stand at the stern to navigate the path ahead for not only iwi Māori but for Aotearoa, our home. Dr Apirana Mahuika (Ngāti Porou) Revered Māori leader, Treaty of Waitangi Scholar, and Anglican Minister. Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell described him as a man who exuded rangatiratanga and was unrelenting in his promotion and protection of all Ngāti Porou taonga We also commemorate the 175 th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, so there will be a considerable focus on how the evolution of the Māori legal profession has been, and will continue to be, influenced by Te Tiriti, having particular regard to the following sub-themes: (a) (b) (c) Te Tiriti o Waitangi; Hauora; and Whakawhanaungatanga. The vibrant programme offers approximately 11.5 CPD hours on a variety of topics that encompass these sub-themes, and showcases an exceptional line up of speakers which includes some of the greatest legal minds in Aotearoa. This is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone working in all areas relevant to Māori to network, engage, be inspired, and gain valuable CPD hours in the process. 6 Registration Information Conference Venue The Conference is to be held at the Copthorne Hotel & Resort, Waitangi. All rooms will be signposted at the venue and a registration desk will be set up in the foyer/hotel reception area. Further details regarding parking and transport will be provided to those registered closer to the Conference date. Conference Dinner A highlight of the programme annually is the formal Conference dinner, which will be held at the Waitaha Events Centre this year on the Saturday evening. If you wish to bring a guest to the dinner or purchase a ticket for the dinner only, tickets are $125 each. Numbers for the dinner are limited and those registered for the full Conference will take priority. Accommodation Options Accommodation at special conference rates has been reserved for conference participants at the Copthorne Hotel & Resort and Scenic Hotel. Participants are to book accommodation themselves with reference to the Conference using the attached booking forms. Please note that there are limited rooms available so we recommend that you book as early as possible to secure your accommodation. All bookings are subject to availability if made by 30 August Marae accommodation (communal) is also available at Otiria Marae (costs included in registration fee). To secure marae accommodation please ensure that the appropriate box is ticked on the registration form below. Linen and pillowcases will be provided but all other bedding is to be organised by participants. Hauora This year s programme includes hauora activities on the Saturday afternoon. Please select Option 1 or 2 on the registration form so that we can budget accordingly. Members and Student Rates Membership of THRMoA is as of right to any person who is of Māori descent and who has a Law Degree or other legal qualification or who is studying for a Law Degree or other legal qualification or is a lecturer of law-related units of learning at any tertiary institution. Student rates apply to those who are currently studying for a Law Degree or other legal qualification and are not in full time employment. Member rates apply to those who fall under the above definition but do not come within the criteria for student rates. Earlybird Rates and Group Discount Earlybird rates apply to registrations received from members no later than 31 July For those organisations, law firms or other groups with four or more people registered for the Conference, a 10% group discount is to be taken from the total cost of registrations. However, please note that the group discount only applies to earlybird member/non-member rates. 5
