1 B A C K G R O U N D The Te Āhurutanga Māori Student Leadership Programme aims to build the Māori student leadership capacity at the University of Waikato. It provides an opportunity for Māori students to further develop and enhance previous leadership experience within a Māori learning environment. These Awards were established in 2012 under the mantle of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori Office. The objective of the awards are to support those students who are successful in their selection for the programme. These Awards have been made possible by the Equity Grant administered by the Tertiary Education Commission. R E G U L A T I O N S 1. General 1.1. The award shall be known as Te Āhurutanga Māori Student Leadership Programme Award. 2. Eligibility 2.1. To be eligible, applicants must: a) have completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the University of Waikato; b) be enrolled or intending to enrol in A and B semesters at the University of Waikato in 2015; and, c) be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Māori ethnicity. 3. Value 3.1. The value of the Award will be $1, The Award will be paid in two instalments of $500, the first in A semester and the second upon successful completion of the Te Āhurutanga Māori Student Leadership Programme in December (see clause 8.1) The number and value of Awards in any year will be determined by the Selection Panel. 4. Application 4.1. Applications must be completed on the prescribed form and submitted to the Scholarships Office by 17 May Applicants may be required to undergo an interview. 5. Selection Criteria 5.1. The Awards will be made on the basis of: a) academic merit, b) community involvement (on and off-campus) and / or leadership experience, c) and knowledge, understanding of and/or willingness to learn and demonstrate te reo Māori me ōnā tikanga the Māori language and its customs in its many forms.

2 6. Selection Panel 6.1. The Selection Panel will comprise of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Māori) as Chair, the Chairperson of the Scholarships Committee, Director of Māori Advancement and the Student Support Manager (Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori office), or their nominees The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no applicants of sufficient merit The Selection Panel s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into following the selection meeting. 7. Awarding 7.1. The successful applicants will be offered the Award on condition that they are enrolled full- or parttime at the University of Waikato in Successful applicants will be advised of the offer of an Award in writing and must advise the University s Scholarships Office of their acceptance of the offer by the prescribed date. If the candidate fails to accept the Award within the specified time, the offer will lapse The Award will have a maximum tenure of one year. 8. Other Conditions 8.1. Recipients will be required to participate in and complete all the requirements of the Leadership Programme. A final programme will be available with the offer of acceptance however, this is expected to include: a) up to four overnight wānanga; b) a community group project (including report); c) a visual diary/journal; and, d) a final presentation, focusing on the community group project The Award may be held together with any scholarship, prize or student allowance, unless the conditions of the other awards preclude this The Scholarships Committee, in consultation with the Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori Office, may terminate the Award at any time if it is not satisfied that the holder is following the approved programme of study or is not otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Award and/or the regulations of the University of Waikato The holder of an Award will have the right to appeal to the appropriate University Committee 1 against any decision to terminate an Award By accepting an Award, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the Award arranged by the University of Waikato. 1 Student appeals for University of Waikato Awards granted for undergraduate or completely taught postgraduate level study should be made to the Education Committee; student appeals for research level study (e.g. Masters) should be made to the Research Committee.
