2 Tēnā rā koutou katoa The Aotearoa Scholarship Trust is pleased to announce its scholarship and award offerings for In the last five years, AST has distributed scholarships and awards worth over $500,000 to students throughout the country. AST are once again excited to support exceptional students towards gaining higher education and have developed further scholarships and awards to assist these students to achieve success. This year, AST are proud to launch a new Memorial Award - the Dr. Buck Nin Māori Contemporary Art Award. This award has been designed to acknowledge his significant work and passion for Māori Art. AST will offer a one-off Te Wānanga o Aotearoa 30th Anniversary Community Award as a way of acknowledging the thirty years since the establishment of the Waipā Kōkiri the founding institution of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. The award will support a worthy community organisation in their aspirations for whānau transformation or community development. AST also wish to support young people who are about to embark on their first years of tertiary education, by creating a number of youth focused scholarships. Please take some time to explore our scholarship and award offerings in this booklet, as well as essential information about the application process. Finally, AST would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Manaoterangi Forbes and Sir Toby Curtis, who completed their terms as AST trustees in 2015.

3 Trustee Profiles Hone Paul - Chairman Ngāti Manawa, Te Arawa Hone brings more than 10 years experience in the marketing and advertising sector to the role of Executive Director Marketing at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Hone has strong expertise in marketing, including brand leadership, campaign strategy, social media, advertising, creative and relationship management. Hone has managed a number of successful campaigns in New Zealand and abroad. Keri Milne-Ihimaera Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mamoe Keri is Executive Director, Tauira Services at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Keri is passionate about education and has an outstanding record of senior positions in primary and secondary education which embellish her own achievements in higher education. Keri is the former Principal of Moerewa School in Northland, and has more than 25 years experience in primary and secondary education from South Auckland through to Northland. She is involved in kapa haka and Māori performing arts at a range of levels. Keri also brings an impressive record of leadership roles in numerous professional education bodies. Josh Wharehinga Ngāti Porou, Te Arawa, Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga a Māhaki Josh is a member of Te Mana Whakahaere, the Council of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Josh has considerable governance experience having chaired community residents association Ka Pai Kaiti and the Community Organisational Grants Scheme in Gisborne, which administers funds to different community groups. Josh was elected as a Councillor to the Gisborne District Council in For more than a decade, Josh has had governance involvement with a number of schools and clubs in the Gisborne area as treasurer, trustee, secretary and chairperson.

4 Past Aotearoa Scholarship Trust Recipients Dr Jason Tuhoe (Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Pukenga, Ngā Puhi) 2015 Māori Language Scholarship Recipient $4,000 Jason Tuhoe is the inaugural recipient of the Aotearoa Scholarship Trust s Te Reo Rangatira - Māori Language Scholarship. A student in Te Panikiretanga, Jason believes the skills he has gained from the elite language school and Te Whare Tāhuhu Kōrero o Hauraki will assist him in reviving traditional Hauraki language and customs. A GP registrar, Dr Tuhoe is working towards his Fellowship in a clinic at Papakura and will soon complete his GP training. He has practised medicine for the past seven years at Middlemore Hospital and Māori GP clinics throughout the Counties Manukau region. Jason says this scholarship is a way of reducing financial barriers in regards to the cost of receiving higher education. Caroline O Donnell (Muaupoko, Ngāti Raukawa) 2014 Toi (Māori & Indigenous Arts) Scholarship Recipient $5,000 Caroline O Donnell says she feels an obligation to pass on the weaving skill that she learned as a young girl. Caroline says her scholarship is not for personal gain, I see it as a waka to share what has been passed down from our tupuna and to leave for our future generations. Caroline was raised by her grandmother whom she watched in awe as a youngster as she weaved. Her studies in the art form have since seen her come under the tutelage of master weavers including Matekino Lawless, Tina Wirihana, Kohai Grace and Tracey Huxford. She says the scholarship is a treasured taonga that will help her achieve her goal. My intention is to continue what has been handed down from our tupuna to ensure that my whānau and community have a resource that will continue for years to come. Te Huia Wikaire (Te Whānau ā Apanui, Ngāpuhi) 2015 Rewi Panapa Memorial Award Recipient $5,000 Rewi Panapa Award recipient Te Huia Wikaire is an exceptional student. She is legally blind and suffers from multiple sclerosis but refuses to let these conditions slow her down and last year completed her Te Tohu Paetahi Ngā Poutoko Whakarara Oranga - Bachelor of Social Work (Biculturalism in Practice) studies with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Te Huia paid tribute to Te Wānanga o Aotearoa for providing her with the opportunity to pursue a tertiary education and for being the catalyst to rediscovering her roots and inner tikanga. Her ultimate goal is to work as a social worker and provide advocacy for people who are disabled especially in the health sector.

5 Past Aotearoa Scholarship Trust Recipients Marvin Chase (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tahu) 2014 Toi (Māori & Indigenous Arts) Scholarship Recipient $5,000 Just three years ago Marvin Chase began chiselling away at a career in carving. He has plans to build an ancestral whare where he will oversee its construction as a master carver. He wants to evolve his mastery of carving and kōwhaiwhai before imparting his knowledge and skills on a whānau and hapū basis. I have upcoming projects that range from the carving of 21st keys, ngā hoe (paddles), ngā rākau memorials and in particular the participation in the building and carving of our ancestral wharenui. I do hope that once obtaining the knowledge and skills that I acquire that I may be instrumental in the lives of present and future generations yet to come. He says funds from the scholarship will greatly assist in the purchase of the tools of his trade; chisels, travel and course costs. Leana Kukutai (Ngāti Maahanga, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Pukenga) 2015 Angitū - He Waka Hiringa Scholarship Recipient $5,000 Leana Kukutai walks her talk. She is heavily involved in the field of educational leadership within Aotearoa and abroad and aims to make a difference by leading by example. An ordained minister with Assemblies of God, New Zealand, Leana has travelled extensively across third world countries, spending time in Uganda and East Africa providing training and teaching support in some of the most impoverished areas. Leana says she chooses to be a role model for her whānau, hapu and iwi to help capture important tribal aspirations of values and success and contribute in the sharing of knowledge, wellbeing and development. Mārama Henare-Waho (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Porou) 2014 ASB Scholarship Recipient $2,500 Originally qualified as a lawyer, Mārama has spent the best part of 20 years serving on various Māori land trusts and incorporations. In that time, she has established a whānau trust, a papakainga at Mōkau and has appeared before the Māori Land Court and Waitangi Tribunal where she has aired her peoples land grievances. As a recipient of this scholarship, Mārama says the award will ease the financial stress on her family and allow her to focus on her studies. Mārama plans to use her Diploma in Māori Governance and Leadership to further serve her people. I find this work stimulating and satisfying and view it as a continuation of the work undertaken by previous generations, says Mārama.

6 Scholarships Toi (Māori & Indigenous Arts) This scholarship is for students enrolled in a degree in Māori and Indigenous Arts: Rauangi, Whakairo or Raranga. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $4,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $4,000 Number available 3 - The student will be of Māori or Pasifika descent. - The student will be studying a degree programme. - Preference will be given to a student under 25 years of age. Toi (Māori & Indigenous Arts) This scholarship is for students enrolled in a diploma in Māori and Indigenous Arts: Rauangi, Whakairo or Raranga. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $2,500. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $2,500 Number available 3 - The student will be of Māori or Pasifika descent. - The student will be studying a diploma programme. - Preference will be given to a student under 25 years of age. Te Hiringa (Education & Social Services) This scholarship is for students enrolled in a degree or graduate diploma. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $4,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $4,000 Number available 5 - Open entry (stipulation applies to students enrolled in Social Services only). - The student will be of Māori or Pasifika descent (applies to students enrolled in Education only). - The student will be studying a degree or graduate programme. - Preference will be given to a student under 25 years of age. * Subject to evidence being provided by the student of satisfactory progress

7 Angitū (Māori Governance & Leadership and Iwi Marine & Fresh Water studies) This scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Diploma in Māori Governance and Leadership, and in Iwi Marine & Fresh Water studies. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $2,500. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $2,500 Number available 3 Scholarships continued - The student will be studying the diploma in Māori Governance & Leadership or the diploma in Iwi Marine & Freshwater studies - Preference will be given to a student who is a trustee in a whānau, hapū or iwi trust. Angitū (Māori & Indigenous Peoples Development) This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Te Mana Ao Tūroa (Taiao) Bachelor of Māori Advancement. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $4,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $4,000 Number available 1 - The student will be studying Te Mana Ao Tūroa (Taiao) Bachelor of Māori Advancement. Angitū - He Waka Hiringa This scholarship is for students enrolled in He Waka Hiringa Master of Applied Indigenous Knowledge degree. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $4,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $4,000 Number available 1 - This student will be enrolled in He Waka Hiringa - Master of Applied Indigenous Knowledge degree. - Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the community * Subject to evidence being provided by the student of satisfactory progress

8 Scholarships continued Te Reo Rangatira - (Māori Language) This scholarship is for students enrolled in a degree in te reo Māori. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $4,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $4,000 Number available 1 - The student will be studying a degree programme in te reo Māori. Kāpuia Graduate This scholarship is for a graduate student of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa who is studying towards a post-graduate qualification. It covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. - Open Entry - The student will be a graduate of a Te Wānanga o Aotearoa degree or diploma programme. Te Arawhānui - (Business Computing & Innovation) This scholarship is for students studying a diploma in Information Technology and Small Business Enterprises. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. Value per scholarship $2,500 Number available 2 - Open Entry - The student will be studying a diploma programme in Business Computing & Innovation. Te Wānanga o Aotearoa 30th Anniversary Community Award To mark the 30th anniversary of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, a special one-off grant of $5,000 will be awarded to a not-for-profit organisation operating an on-going initiative or project which benefits whānau and the community. The grant will be awarded to an organisation who best demonstrates a commitment to raising achievement in the areas of youth development or Mātauranga Māori. Supporting evidence - Applying organisations must be not-for-profit. - Preference will be given to organisations who are community based. - Preference will be given to organisations who can demonstrate a commitment to a long standing project or initiative (as opposed to one-off events). - A cover letter explaining how the project or initiative raises achievement in the areas of youth development or Mātauranga Māori. - Applicants must include copies of their latest bank statement and most recent audited accounts. - The chairperson or project manager s report from the last AGM or project meeting. - Letter or minutes confirming your organisation s endorsement of this application. - Printed bank deposit slip for the account to be credited. - At least two (2) written references supporting your application. * Subject to evidence being provided by the student of satisfactory progress

9 New Youth Scholarships Applications Open August 2016 There are two award catergories dedicated specifically for young students the Kākano Scholarship and the Rangatahi Scholarship. The application process for these awards is different to other scholarships. Applications for these scholarships open on 30 August 2016 and will close on 30 January Scholarship recipients will be announced in March 2017, and scholarships awarded in April Kākano This scholarship is open to young people who are enrolled in a degree level programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. It covers course related costs to a maximum value of $1,000, and will be paid to students in April Value per scholarship $1,000 Number available 2 - The student will be completing Year 12 or Year 13 of secondary school in The student will be enrolled on a degree level programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa that commences in The student will be of Māori or Pasifika descent. Rangatahi This scholarship is for young people who are enrolled in a certificate or diploma level programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. It covers course related costs to a maximum value of $500, and will be paid to students in April Value per scholarship $500 Number available 4 - The student will be under 21 years of age. - The student will be enrolled on a certificate or diploma level programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa that commences in The student will be of Māori or Pasifika descent.

10 Memorial Awards Tane Taylor Tane Taylor was the first teacher of te reo Māori at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and passed away in This award recognises his desire that we continue to honour and communicate in the language of our tūpuna. This scholarship covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. - The student will be enrolled in a degree or diploma programme. - Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the community and to te reo Māori Dr Diggeress Te Kanawa Dr Diggeress Te Kanawa was an expert in customary practices of toi raranga, whatu and tukutuku. She was a scholar and a teacher who held strong beliefs about the value of education and was committed to the values and aspirations of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. This award recognises her commitment to education and covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. - The student will be enrolled in a degree or diploma programme. - Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the community and the arts. Mike Watson Mike Watson was the director of the Papaiōea campus in Palmerston North and served in senior management at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa during some challenging times. Sadly, Mike passed away in Mike was deeply committed to the arts as a way of communicating and reviving mātauranga Māori. This award recognises his passion and covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. - The student will be enrolled in a degree or diploma programme. - Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the community and whakairo. * Subject to evidence being provided by the student of satisfactory progress

11 Memorial Award continued Rewi Panapa Rewi Panapa was a founder of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and served as the Chairperson of the Council of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa from its establishment until In 1998, Rewi resigned as Chairperson and remained a member of council while undertaking the role of Campus Director at Maniapoto campus in Te Kuiti. Rewi remained totally committed to Te Wānanga o Aotearoa until his sudden passing in July Rewi was a very highly respected and qualified health professional and practitioner with a strong passion for Māori success. This award recognises his passion and covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of each scholarship, if any, will be paid to the recipient in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the other at the midpoint of the year*. - The student will be enrolled in a degree or diploma programme. - Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the community and health. Dr. Buck Nin (Māori Contemporary Art Award) A well-renowned educator and artist, Dr. Buck Nin was instrumental in gaining tertiary status for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. He believed in establishing a tertiary institution that that was to open to all people, regardless of their previous academic achievements. Dr. Buck Nin s work was inspired by both his Māori and Chinese ancestry. His paintings and work grace many collections throughout the world and he is considered one of the most important Māori contemporary artists in New Zealand Art history. The award covers tuition fees to a maximum value of $5,000. The balance of the award, if any, will be paid in two lump sums as follows: one on completion of enrolment and the remaining $2500 at the midpoint of the tertiary year* - This award is open to students who are completing their final year of a degree or studying towards a postgraduate degree in the field of Māori Contemporary Art - The student must submit a portfolio showing examples of eight (8) works, illustrating quality examples and development. - The student must provide two references from people that support their practice and study. - The student must also include a covering letter explaining their knowledge of Dr. Buck Nin s work, and their own contributions to the advancement of Māori Contemporary Art. - Preference will be given to a tauira who demonstrates a commitment to painting. Definition of a student: A student means a person who is enrolled and committed to a programme of post secondary/tertiary study.
